5.0 out of 5 stars Water magnet, 18 Sept. 2017

Am currently road testing one of these towels in my bathroom for drying my hands and so far am quite impressed with its performance.

This soaks up the moisture from wet skin in a jiffy without the repeated rubbing motion needed when using a cotton towel. It almost sucks the water off you.

It also dries very quickly, even in cool indoor conditions, whereas ordinary towels can take ages to dry properly unless the air is warm, dry and breezy.

Don't expect it to feel snuggly and fluffy. This thing feels more like a thin chamois leather but I can live with that.

It will be very handy for travelling as it takes up much less space than a normal towel.

Have also purchased a similar bath-size towel which is next in line to be tested.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pen of many parts, 18 Sept. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The entire pen body, with the exception of the clip and scriber, is made of black anodised aircraft grade aluminium.

Let's start at the bottom and work upwards:-

The first thing you'll find is a soft rubber 'stylus' which is intended for use on ipad screens, etc. The stylus is held in place by a small screw-on cap and a spare stylus is included in the packaging.

The next thing to unscrew is the scratcher/scriber cover cap (contains the stylus) which can be screwed onto the top of the pen for safekeeping. There is a rubber O-ring between the cap and pen body to prevent the ingress of water. The tungsten carbide scriber should be durable enough for use on a variety of surfaces such as stone, glass, ceramics, plastic, metal and wood, and looks as though it would also make an effective jabbing/gouging weapon.

Next up we have the pen cap, which can also be screwed to the top of the body, but this tends to make the whole item unbalanced and unwieldy for use as a writing implement. If the cap is left off then the pen feels nicely usable for writing with. Again there is an O-ring between the cap and main body. There are also four spare refills in the packaging which can be installed by unscrewing the end of the pen grip. The refills are small and very thin but write smoothly.

Moving up further there is the top cap which unscrews to reveal the multitool comprising a small flathead screwdriver, bottle cap opener, 6mm hexagon wrench, the shortest saw I have ever seen and a tiny box opener knife. The screwdriver could be useful, the rest I have my doubts about due to the Lilliput size and spindliness of the tool overall, which looks as though it would break in normal use. The box opener isn't very sharp but does cut through paper, thin card and sellotape. The saw has no edge to it and is too short to be practical. The tool will unscrew from the pen body if you want to replace it when it breaks, but this is also a fatal flaw as it will tend to unscrew itself when turning the screwdriver anticlockwise (sack the designer). There is a third O-ring to keep out water.

Then we come to the spring steel belt/pocket clip, which is the sturdiest that I've ever seen and much stronger than the one on my Leatherman Charge multitool, for example.

Finally, at the very top of the body is a slightly raised/pointed tip which could presumably be used for breaking out of a crashed car by smashing the window glass. The scriber could also be used for the same purpose.

Overall this gadget looks precisely made and well finished. It's not too big or heavy to be carried in a pocket and has a lot crammed into a pen-sized package. Shame about the multitool which will need to be used with care. I would prefer to award four and a half stars but the option isn't available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you have deadlocks on your external doors, 12 Sept. 2017

Only had this kit for a couple of days but already impressed with it.

I'd never picked a lock before but was inspired to buy the kit after seeing a video on YouTube showing how to do it. I managed to open the extremely helpful transparent padlock at my first attempt and it only took 5 minutes --- I thought I would be struggling for much longer to learn the required technique. I then tried the smaller "credit card" kit on the same lock and was amazed that it opened in just one minute!

I have a spare Yale door lock somewhere so that will be my next target.

Be aware that the credit card box is slightly bigger than an actual credit card so it won't fit into my wallet. It's also 3mm thick.

A very useful kit (and skill) to have, but it's alerted me to how insecure most padlocks and front door locks are when anyone can get their hands on the means to unpick them.

A good selection of seemingly high quality hex socket machine screws in five sizes. What more does one need to know?

The case looks and feels very sturdy and tough, and for once isn't a cheap Chinese thing, with "made in great britain" moulded into the back. The lid is securely locked shut by a robust clip which I found a little tricky to open at first but soon figured out the required technique. Closing is more straightforward and accompanied by a satisfyingly positive click. The screws are prevented from swapping compartments when it's closed and there's no chance of it accidentally falling open when being transported.

When all the screws have served their purpose I'll find another use for the case as I'm sure it will last for many years.

I've been using similar type matches since the 1980s although I believe they've been available for a lot longer. I bought these to boost my stock as it was running a bit low.

These things don't blow out in the wind and will even burn underwater or when stamped on or covered by earth/sand. Once lit, they will burn until fully spent, which will take about ten seconds, so be very careful about when and where you strike them.

I tested one just to be sure that they will work when needed. I agree with a couple of previous reviews that they're not the easiest matches to strike but a little patience and the right technique ensures the required result. Another reviewer complained that they smell bad if used indoors but I quite like the smell (it's probably not as bad as "napalm in the morning"!).

The container feels sturdy and screws tightly shut. Not sure if it's waterproof but the matches themselves will be OK anyway.

These seem as good as any that I've used before.

This was bought as an 'extension' to a military-spec bumbag which turned out to be too small for my requirements. Although I haven't seen any specific 'military' claims regarding this pack it seems to share the same rugged build quality as its unrelated companion and includes a surprising number of zipped compartments given its compact size.

The nylon construction is certainly tough enough. The zips and belt clips feel sturdy and have so far been reliable. The tight grip of the bottle compartment ensures your precious water won't unexpectedly slip out. I have yet to discover if it's waterproof.

Very happy with it so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product trying too hard to be noticed, 22 Aug. 2017

Bought two of these as upgrades for my cheapo aluminium water carriers. These have greater capacity, should be more durable, and are free from the apparent health problems associated with aluminium when used for food and drink purposes.

The product looks well made. The lid is a bit fiddly to screw on (feels loose at first and is uncertain to engage in its screw thread), but tightens and seals well. I tested this by filling both bottles with water and standing them upside down overnight. No leaks.

I was confused by the blurb claim of "leakproof bamboo lid". Duh?? A bamboo lid??? A bamboo lid that is leakproof???? That would suggest that bamboo can seal water leaks. I went ahead and bought anyway based on previous reviews and a personal recommendation from another Amazon customer.

The top of the lid looks to me to be made of wood, but I could be wrong. Bamboo isn't wood as it's classified scientifically as a woody grass, but by the by. The seal is provided by a modern rubbery polymer ring which, from my test at least, does the job.. If the bamboo/wooden lid falls off or rots away it won't affect the physical integrity of this bottle/flask at all and in my opinion it's just decoration to distinguish this brand from the rest.

Because of the above-described gimmick and the fiddly screw thread I have deducted one star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could be a useful piece of kit, 22 Aug. 2017

I bought this for my partner who works nightshifts and for more than half the year walks to work in the dark.

It looks quite well constructed and is surprisingly loud for such a small item. The little blue torch is also quite bright for its size and a handy inclusion.

To deploy the required noise simply tug hard on the lanyard/rip cord to release the pin and direct the sound at the presumably disoriented target's face until they flee. To silence simply reinsert the pin.

Hopefully this will never need to be used in an emergency but may well be enough to scare off any cowardly scum that see lone women as an easy target (and here's news for them --- despite appearances she's NEVER been an easy target!).

It takes 3 tiny button batteries of the type normally found in wristwatches, etc. I would expect such cells to last for many years on standby if not used but their effective 'operational time' when needed would be anybody's guess.

I bought this as a compact, lightweight emergency backup for the several other types of camping/survival stoves that I use.

I've used a stove of this type only once before, in the 1980s, so I know that it works, and I have no reason to suspect that this one will be any different as the basic design is the same.

It has two cooking/heating positions; half open for heating a mug of water, for example, and fully open for a larger pot or pan.

It seems a bit tricky to open at first but the technique of gripping either end and trying to break it like a piece of crusty bread seems to work best for me (make sure it's the right way up first!).

Despite the simple design this is quite a versatile little piece of kit. It works best with solid fuel cooking tablets and firelighters as they give off the most heat, but will also accommodate a couple of T-lites. Even a small fire can be built within and around the stove in a pinch when its main purpose will be to support the pot or pan above.

I must stress that this should only be considered an emergency backup and not a long-term survival solution. If used daily I wouldn't expect it to last any longer than a month, even in ideal conditions. It's also not a very efficient way of boiling water or cooking food and will take longer to do so than most methods.

Good to have one around though, and cheap to buy.
