My first ever non compilation album and still wonderful after all these years.

Concerto for a Rainy Day is guaranteed to bring you out of any bad time. Other highlights for me are It's Over, Across the Border, Night in the City, Starlight, Jungle, Stepping Out and of course all the hits.

Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New World Record for ELO, 5 Aug. 2013

Their best album to this point, only Out of the Blue beats it. Highlights a bound, even Above the Clouds which at first I found to be no more than a small space filler but now find it much more profound.

ELO's first album in Germany with Mack and quite a break from the past, even though Eldorado showcased at least some of the change. Fire on High starts like something out of a horror movie, great for Hi-Fi. Then we have Waterfall, one of the best mournful ballads you will ever hear. The first single Evil Woman follows, their first big break after the chart false dawn of Roll Over Beethoven (good though it was). Nightrider finishes off 'Side 1', not a hit even though it was on Top of the Pops but still a good tune with Bev's drums and the orchestra driving it along. Poker starts 'side 2' and is a real headbanger with a slower midsection, almost A Day in the Life reversed. Strange Magic starts with one of the simplest but beautiful string section followed by Richard Tandy making his guitar gently weep. Next we go country with Down Home Town before we finish off with the wonderful One Summer Dream, juts lose yourself in it, you will not regret it.

So Jeff n co sounding more like the Jeff n co we would know so well by the end of the 70's. Just the Music we want to Face in fact.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Start of the Symphony, 5 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Eldorado (Audio CD)
Up until now, ELO had been very string quartet in the way they sounded. Now enter Louis Clark's orchestral arrangements and perhaps Jeff getting more to grips with how he wanted to sound across to Tandy and Bevan, and we have the business. A concept album and some mighty fine tracks such as the Intro, Laredo Tornado, Poor Boy, Noboby's Child and Illusions in G Major, and of course Eldorado Finale. It's arguably a bit long in places (Boy Blue) but never has an ELO album had so much variety. A fine listen.

Mixes reasonably well in a shaker, though needs more than a couple of shakes. I have Banana flavour and it has a good taste. Also have some Whey Protein (which CNP do and is also good) for quick release and recovery.

Does its job and is compact and practical. Easy to fit and makes plenty of noise when asked to do so. Otherwise sits quietly in its place and lets you get on with life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Automatic Pleasure, 1 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Break Out (Audio CD)
So the Pointer Sisters move into electronica, and get their biggest ever. I was so impressed by 'Automatic' when i heard it i bought the album, and was just as impressed.

There is a lot of Prince influence here, circa '1999', with the use of stabbing keyboards (Nightline, Dance Electric and Neutron Dance for instance), as well as the Linn drum, especially 'Easy Persuasion'. The album probably works best with the uptempo stuff as the Synth sound is not the most subtle here. What is consistent though is the quality of the singing. Ruth Pointer has the most magnificent husky, breathy powerhouse of a voice with sisters Anita and June providing the higher ranges. Both the 1983 and 1984 editions are here, and really there is little difference apart from adding 'I'm So Excited' (great piano solo) and remixing 'Jump' a bit. Perhaps it was a bit excessive to have so much duplication but the remixes, 12 inches and single versions are welcome, as is the release of one of the best albums of its era and genre. Also goes to show how much gratitude we should have to Mr P.R. Nelson of Minneapolis, the Prince who ruled magnificently.
