In Their Wisdom
In Their Wisdom
by Charles Percy Snow
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars much like John Fowles, 29 July 2016
This review is from: In Their Wisdom (Paperback)
In Their Wisdom(shortlisted for 1974 Booker Prize)
I give C.P. Snow high marks as an idea novelist, much like John Fowles; after reading one of his books you feel smarter. His writing occasionally lacks as a literary stylist. In Their Wisdom is the middle of his late novels with The Malcontents(1972) and A Coat of Varnish(1979). They can be read almost as a trilogy about the interactions between and amongst various segments of the British establishment. For nearly half a century Snow was intimately involved in British academic and political life. One of his brothers was colonial administrator in Fiji and later received a knighthood.

Maggie Thatcher, the Iron Lady resides in No. 10 and George is back after a seven year stretch in HMP. A bittersweet London tale featuring Bob Hoskins as the protagonist & Michael Caine as a massively sleazy villain. Hoskin's character is a heartfelt everyman, a kinder version of his 1980 role in another noir, The Long Good Friday. Hoskins earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, that year Paul Newman won in The Color of Money. The 1960s era 4-door Jaguar sedan is a great setpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Almost Excellent Movie, 25 Mar. 2014
This is a quasi arthouse film with famous actors. Alone worth watching for Michael Caine's performance. The lack of a major climatic moment is in itself part of the story. Chicago in winter: satire, anti-utopia, inverted worlds, cold and indifferent? Is Dave a Zen Archer/ Hawkeye from Last of the Mohicans/ Robin Hood?

Kenya 1940. A historical drama a galaxy removed from the War in Europe. A glimpse into the rarefied air of the English nobility.

Newcastle 1970, but it could be anywhere in the North or Midlands; dark, tough, gritty, brutal, sometimes vicious...
Jack Carter might be the most unlikeable hero or protagonist in the history of film(i.e. when he callously tells his buddy {get yourself a course in karate}). Based on the novel Jack's Return Home by Ted Lewis, with a great opening jazz soundtrack. Author-Playwright John Osborne plays Carter's ultimate nemesis. On the train in Carter's First Class compartment, notice the stranger sitting next to the window smoking a cigarette with a large ring on the middle finger of his right hand. A little later he's reading The Sun newspaper.

To quote Paul Theroux,"sadder, darker, stranger, narrower, newer, dirtier, more oppressive."

The Polyglots
The Polyglots
by William Gerhardie
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.00

4.0 out of 5 stars The Polyglots, 15 Dec. 2013
This review is from: The Polyglots (Paperback)
"...the glorious twin towers of All Souls stood, wise and quiet, in the nacre-coloured air. They had stood there long before I had come into the world, and they would stand there long after I had ceased to be."

Partly autobiographical, Gerhardie's second novel and the one that put him firmly on the map. A weird funny original work of comic genius. Published in 1925, the same year as The Great Gatsby; the beginning of what I call a decade and a half of quality pre-war Anglo/Irish/American literature which concludes with For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Last Tycoon in 1940. This period includes F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Henry Miller(censored), Ezra Pound, James Joyce(Ulysses finished in 1914, first officially printed in Franch in 1922, the United States in 1934, and Britain in 1936, thanks to censorship. He died in 1941), D.H. Lawrence(censored), Ford Madox Ford, George Orwell, T.S. Eliot, Malcolm Lowry, Nicholas Monsarrat, Graham Greene, John Cowper Powys, and Aldous Huxley.
A worthy companion novel, though written later and different in style and somewhat in POV is Richard McKenna's "The Sand Pebbles" concerning Western commercial & military in the Far East.

Cornwall, Devon, Dorset; the SW coast of England near the end of the Summer Season when the Resort towns slow down for the Winter.
A hybrid film: Part Kitchen Sink Realism//Angry Young Men, & part Mod genre(the British Beat//Hipster movement of the 1960's).
