The Vital Question: Why is life the way it is?
The Vital Question: Why is life the way it is?

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest science books ever, 4 May 2015
I am a working biophysicist with an interest in the subjects that Nick Lane deals with in the book: the origin of life, the energy metabolism of cells, the symbiotic origin of organelles, etc. I was expecting a book in which facts and concepts familiar to me would be presented in an accessible, popular manner. Wrong! Almost everything in it was new to me, and I learned more while reading this book that in thirty years of dabbling. Nick Lane's astonishingly original mind and brilliant writing kept me on my toes all the way through. This is one of those rare books that presents a novel world view and keeps burrowing in your mind long after you've stopped reading it. For those interested in the engine room of life, how it came to be the way it is and how it influenced evolution, there is no better place to start. I think this book should be on the undergraduate biology curriculum in every university. Another thing I found delightful is the fact that the writing is never condescendingly easy, never dumbed down. Biology, at least at the stratospheric level practiced by Lane, is definitely not an easy subject. But Lane's eloquence and vivid metaphors carry you over the hard bits that you can revisit later after a trip to wikipedia. Another thing I imagine some colleagues will frown at, and which I found delightful, is that Lane mentions experiments currently going on in the lab, including some where the outcome is still uncertain. This lends an immediacy and excitement to the story which are rarely found in this kind of narrative when written by journalists as opposed to practising scientists. Overall, an amazing achievement.

1.0 out of 5 stars totally crap, 25 Dec. 2013

All three laser pointers failed within a couple of weeks. This product looks nice and works nice initially, but the main component [laser diode] is clearly of totally shoddy quality.

I've become really attached to this, it never leaves my back pocket. Unfortunately it gets dinged quite a bit os in my hands it only lasts about a year.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solution in search of a worthy problem, 1 Nov. 2013

This is an amazing piece of technology and it is priced right. What it needs now is both a killer app that needs it or a really good interface software that makes it easier to use existing 3D apps. I don't use Maya so have no idea how successful that is, but it looks great. So far, it's full of promise, I wonder what it will deliver.

5.0 out of 5 stars essentially perfect, 1 Dec. 2012

I had been using a Leica D-Lux 4 [badge-engineered Lumix LX-5] for several years and loved it. When the LX-7 came up I bought it immediately for its 1.4 aperture which enables natural-light shots in very dark conditions. This is a beautiful, solid, well-engineered piece of hardware with enough smarts in iA mode to make sure you never take a bad shot. Make sure you get the JJC ALC-LX7B lens cap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific cheap speakers, 20 Feb. 2012

Remarkable speakers for the price, definitely the best value for money speakers I've ever bought new. The bass is surprisingly deep and reasonably musical, the midrange is rich and solid, and the treble is clean and bright. Efficiency is good, and they play loud even with a tiny 10W Tripath Class T amplifier.
