3.0 out of 5 stars More of the same just not quite as good, 6 Mar. 2014
This review is from: The Bridge: Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
It's a shame that when a detective series is successful these days there has to be the inevitable sequel which is usually poorly thought out and a shadow of the original. The plot for the original series was actually quite fun, silly but fun and of course highly pertinent to the title of the series. Any sequel was always going to struggle to be as good and this is the case here. Having said that, this series is almost as engaging and watchable as the first series and although the writers continue to make no attempt at realism or coherence (lest the viewer guesses too early who the baddies are) it continues to entertain to the end. I guess the fact that I watched both series back to back in a couple of weeks says much for the entertainment value. Yes the plot is full of holes you could drive a mobile home through and yes Sofia Helm's portrayal of Saga Noren is still at times just silly but if you liked The Killing, Borgen and Morse you will love this. Now lets all practice our Danish phrases hej hej.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a controller, 6 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This product is nothing like as well made as the official controller and neither as robust or as nice to use. However, given the price tag, it is an absolute bargain for those that want a cheap second controller. I haven't used it much so can't comment on the durability.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly watchable nonsense, 6 Mar. 2014
It always difficult to review a series which is so highly watchable and enjoyable on one level and yet so disconnected from reality and so difficult to enjoy on another. I know many will say just sit back, enjoy and don't worry about all of the plot holes and the lack of realism but I just find that really hard to do.

Of the two distinct groups of detective dramas (namely the realistic type and the edge of the seat with no hold on reality type), The Bridge clearly falls into the latter category. The recipe for this type of drama is as follows:

Take one detective who is a one-of-a-kind maverick who uses unorthodox methods but solves the cases no one else can.
One sidekick who is not as bright as the lead detective but faithful and prone to the odd flash of brilliance.
One unusual (possibly vintage) car which the viewers love.
One ridiculous and convoluted plot that makes little sense but keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Optionally the detective can be a workoholic, an alcoholic/ drug user and have a messy love/social life.
Tip: Think Morse, Sherlock Holmes, Wallander etc etc etc.

This recipe is used effectively in The Bridge. Sofia Helm plays Saga Noren, a female detective who is socially inept, unemotional, seemingly unable to feel emotion or empathise with the human race, a workoholic but a brilliant detective who drives a lovely old Porsche. Perfect! The fact that her portrayal is patently ridiculous and at times reminiscent more of Star Trek's Data than a human being actually does not matter overly since with a plot as ridiculous as this, the fact that you have a detective in the lead role whose actions defy belief becomes of little importance. The fact of the matter is that The Bridge is a highly engaging series which, although nonsensical and at times painful viewing (especially when Saga Noren tries to understand human life - take the menstruation scene), is (in spite of these failings) highly watchable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., 5 Jan. 2014
I thought Uncharted was a brilliant game. Challenging and a blast to play on harder difficulty settings. The trophy system added to the mix to give a final product that ranks in my favourite PS3 games so far (Fallout 3 and Dead Space are the other two). Uncharted 2 was also good but was too reliant on large-scale cinematic set pieces rather than gameplay.

And so to Uncharted 3 which I found hugely disappointing. Playing it felt more like you were involved in an interactive movie with the odd fight thrown in to keep players happy than a well thought out game. Skip the cut scenes and it is a pretty short game. At certain points in the game you are restricted in what you can do (particularly in the desert) which became pretty frustrating on the third playthrough. Playing through on normal difficulty was, at times, actually quite challenging and I had doubts that I would be able to complete the game on crushing difficulty but once I had learned the game dynamics crushing was actually a breeze (except for the ship levels which were nasty). The trophy system was pretty much identical to the previous games and quickly became a chore rather than a challenge.

In summary, Uncharted 3 is more of the same but veering more towards interactive movie than action game. The new element ie. the brawling system was a failure and added nothing to the core gameplay which remains solid. Overall I was disappointed with this installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening!, 23 Dec. 2013
A fascinating conclusion to a riveting trilogy of films about a dreadful misjustice that I'm sure is fairly common in the US. Although the trio finally receive a form of justice, the pill is bittersweet and as such this is a far from satisfying end to these appalling events.

Shows the US justice system in its real light but also demonstrates the danger of trial by documentary.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable, 23 Dec. 2013

Like Mainstream before it, this album is a perfectly pleasant listen but at the same time instantly forgettable. Butterfly is probably the stand-out track but any colour stands out in a grey landscape.

For diehard fans only.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sigh..., 23 Dec. 2013
This review is from: The Darkness (PS3) (Video Game)
Why do people give games like this good reviews. I really really don't understand.

What is clear is that a lot of work went into the development of this game. It looks great, the cast of characters have depth (though they lack credibility) and a lot of thought has gone into the gameplay to make it engrossing and fun. They just forgot one thing. It's just not fun to play. The two elements of gameplay ie. the darkness and the non-darkness don't meld, shooting out lights becomes a pain very quickly and the repetitive monotonous nature of the gameplay defies replay.

Given an extra star because the "vision" promised much but about as much fun to play as Haze, Alone in the Dark and Turok ie. none.

2.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable... what was I talkin' about?, 23 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mainstream (Audio CD)
1987's Mainstream was a complete change of direction for Lloyd Cole, away from his distinctive style to a more laid-back sound. Opening track "My Bag" is upbeat but instantly forgettable. "From the Hip" and "29" are both melodic but rather twee and "Mainstream" just rather dull. "Jennifer She Said" (the fan's favourite) has a catchy hook but again is disappointingly trite. The remaining tracks fade to grey except for the egregious "Mr Malcontent" which tested the speed of my reactions (for the skip track button) every time it reached its painful chorus.

Mainstream is a perfectly pleasant listen but lacks the melodic intensity of his previous two releases, particularly, Rattlesnakes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great start and then..., 10 Dec. 2013
Really enjoyed the first two episodes of this and then and then it all went flat. Nothing really happened for three whole episodes until the rediculous and hard to fathom ending was sprung upon us. Too much time was spent trying to deal with the emotional fallout of the death of a daughter, mother and girlfriend and too little time moving the plot forward but then ... there was no plot. Hence the two stars.

PS. To the writer: in formal recorded interviews, there is an indication given well before the tape ends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter & the Seven Clones, 8 Dec. 2013
I watched this on BBC3 recently because it was recommended by some newspaper or other but I must confess to being pretty disappointed by it. It was obviously an attempt by the Beeb to appeal to the Harry Potter generation and the dead-eyed, short attention spanned US audience.

From the very beginning you can see why it was tucked away on BBC3 and screened as quickly as possible in double slots on a Friday night. The story was dire and far from engaging or interesting. The script was similarly poor and the characters paper thin and far from believable. I actually thought Tatiana Maslany made a pretty good stab at playing all the different roles but it was always going to be an impossible task to be convincing in such a disparate set of roles. Her portrayal of Beth the hard-nosed cop was absolutely brilliant given she was playing an imposter pretending to be a police officer for which she deserves an Oscar. Kevin Hanchard was probably the one actor who surfaced after the carnage with distinction which only served to highlight the lack of quality all around him. To be honest it was all just a bit of a mess; a teenage drama but with obviously adult themes! Odd.

As with so many popular dramas, there were endless plot twists and "edge of the seat" moments but it never strayed into the vaguely believable. Recommended if you like Spooks, Heroes, The Shield, Lost or Harry Potter (and you are an adult (or over 18 anyway)), otherwise avoid like the plague.
