5.0 out of 5 stars Learning About Comedy From The Master, 13 Sept. 2010
There are few more intelligent, thoughtful, and dare I say hardworking comedians in the "business" as Stewart Lee.I have seen pretty much every single one of his shows since I first saw him live at Glastonbury in 1998 and he doesn't disappoint.
This book is a fantastic record of three of his most acclaimed hour long pieces of work, but it is the footnotes and introduction pieces that are the real gold here. It is a fascinating insight into what it takes to write a show like Stewart has done, and also shows the painstaking gradual improvements that are made from trying out new ideas to a fully fledged hour long piece at the Edinburgh festival, or on DVD. Anyone who claims to like stand up comedy, or wants to go into the artform themselves should read this book.
I cannot praise it enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Worst and Most Prepsoterous Films You'll Ever See, 9 Jun. 2009
This review is from: City Rats [DVD] (DVD)
Where do I begin? This film isn't intelligent as the above reviews suggest. It may appear intelligent to those who think "The Business" is a british Goodfellas, but it isn't. It's one of those currently popular (or at least it was a few years ago) where loads of seemingly very different characters lives intersect with each other with predictable consequences.Danny Dyer's part of the film is perhaps the most entertaining, simply because he's got an element of charisma missing from the rest of the cast. Except the excellent and beautiful Susan Lynch, who actually makes parts of teh film watchable.
This film contains a ridiculous subplot about a man who may or may not be Gay trying to find his Autistic brother a grubby smash and grab virginity loss with a series of rent boys and clubbing gays. It is daft to say the least, and clumsy.
I tried to give this fim no stars but wasn't able to. So 1 star it is.
Don't bother with this trash

2.0 out of 5 stars Animal Whimsy Overload, 21 Jan. 2008
Looks like the teenage pop star "comedians" have run out of ideas. Same charcaters being brought back for diminishing returns. "Vince" as a character has become unlikeable. Too many pseudo cool references to bands that Fielding thinks are cool. The one where they steal the whole premise for the show from Inner Space, the 80's movie, is ok. The one with the crimp off is ok too, but the mileage is showing on this show now.
Suitable for female teenagers, but people who like actual comedy should stay clear-there are just not enough funny bits, its all about style over substance IN MY OPINION.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice MC, nasty content., 13 Nov. 2007
This review is from: 1 [CD+DVD] (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Cilvaringz for some time, and bought this album a while ago on import from Japan. I agree with the previous reviewer-th ebeats are some of the best to roll out of the Wu Mansion for a long time, and there are some classics on here.
Before I continue I have to say that I am no prude, and I am a confirmed liberal who can see many points of view but there are some lyrics on this album which unashamedly support terrorist actions-in context of the album and the lyrical content this is acceptable but if you are ill informed, or judgemental about world politics this album WILL offend you.
He is an incisive well read man, who has a lot of talent. Shame he has to rely on shock tactics. Also there is a pro-Michael Jackson track on this album which makes me think that Ringz is mad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic, 9 Jan. 2007
The two reviewers below seem to have totally missed the point to this film. John Evans' asserion that it is "made for middle class lefties, by middle class lefties" is an affront to the themes of this film. The other reviewer says "It's a pitty you don't get it dubbed in english, specially if you don't speack french." This also misses the point-you wouldn't have the guttral impact of the dialogue in this film if it were dubbed. French is a very expressive language and the performers would look ridiculous if English was spewing out of their mouths.

La Haine (Hate) is about normal people who live in abnormal conditions, not necessarily the WORST poverty in the world but they are not getting their fair share. Like a lot of people. The housing estates outside Paris have been enflamed again recently and this kind of proves that this is an important, polemical film that has lost none of its resonance in the eleven years since its release.

As well as the powerful story you have stylish direction and a beautiful black and white presentation. This film will not appeal to people who can't read and watch pictures at the same time, or "idiots" as I call them. Just because a film is subtitled it doesn't mean you should deride it. Neither should it be shot down as a propoganda film for "middle class lefties"-it is a depiction of the events in on day of the lives of people you may not at first understand, but will eventually come to respect and feel empathy and sympathy for (if you have human emotions at least).

A triumph in European cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars GHOST IS BACK!, 5 April 2006
This review is from: Fishscale (Audio CD)
Ghostface's fifth solo album hit the UK shelves on Monday. I always worry about Ghost's output since Bulletproof Wallets but The Pretty Toney album was generally good, but you can't knock Supreme Clientele or Ironman so I was expecting a great album.
The album kicks off on some funky sh1t and Ghost's trademark soul samples are evident on many tracks.
You got production by Pete Rock-who is pretty much flawless as usual but most interesting (at least for me) are the tracks produced by MF DOOM-these tunes are pretty trippy but quite a departure for Ghost and a worthy addition to his back catalogue.
There is a full range of tunes on this LP from emotional tear jerkers like "Whip You With A Strap", thugged out stuff like "Crack Spot" and "Be Easy", plenty of Raekwon but the album does lack a killer RZA beat like "Run" on the last album. The track featuring The Wu Tang Clan is weird too-the vocals are almost too low in the mix and it sounds like its being done live on the radio or something.
Overall this album is worth buying for Ghostface fans, and anyone who thinks they know about hip-hop cos they rock to 50 cent and eminem should check this out-Ghost is like chewing dynamite.

1.0 out of 5 stars TRIPE-if i could give this no stars i would, 13 Mar. 2006
How anyone can laugh at this idiot is beyond me.
It seems that people who like this have enlarged craniums full of sand and freshly cut peat.
There is no innovative value to this, and all the jokes seem to have been written by clueless teenagers.
I really, really wish that this show had never been commissioned.
The first time i saw this was when i came home from the pub and he told Vernon Kay that he had "hair from the past". This is the only funny thing Leigh Francis will ever say or do.
Not only do I think that this programme is poor quality on the gags front, I think it is totally patronising to think that the British public are as idiotic as its creator, the talentless Leigh Francis.

3.0 out of 5 stars More GZA, 13 Mar. 2006
This review is from: Grandmasters (Audio CD)
I was really really looking forward to this album being released-two of Hip-Hops finest collaboratin together and all that.
The GZA is on fine form as usual but the beats just don't grab you. It sounds like a load of Wu-Tang rejections in the main, and is a little cheesy in places.
Having said that there are still some great tunes on there, especially "Queens Gambit".
I think they have just got a little bogged down in sticking to the concept of a "chess album" and this makes it a little one dimensional for my liking.
If you are a hardcore fan of The GZA/Dj Muggs then its a must buy...and to be fair it is no worse than The GZA's last two albums but is nowhere near as good as Liquid Swords......but then again what is?
If you havent got Liquid Swords buy that first, and if you like the GZA's flows (you will if you know anything about rapping).

3.0 out of 5 stars ITS GOOD, 13 Mar. 2006
This programme was ok. I wouldn't "Jump around the room in hysterics" though. Holness is a very funny man, and I saw him live doing a country musician character which was ace. Darkplace was good enough and I'll be buying this in June...I don't want to discourage anyone but felt i had to give a more balanced view as it is definitely not worth 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM SLEPT ON, 24 Jun. 2005
This review is from: Babylon (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of hearing the demos for this album, as I used to be friends with Danite's former flatmate.
Skindred were THE band from Wales....rocked the place to its Roots and their first gig in Le Pub blew my ears so bad i could've cried.
It is a real great album made by cracking blokes and deserved to be a mega-smash-hit album and the band propelled to super stardom. They are really that good. Benji has one of the best and most versatile voices i have ever heard in my life, Jeff is a killer guitarist, Ginge one of the best drummers ever. And Dan added such ill basslines. Real ill.
If it wasn't for the other sh*tty "nu metal" bands around at the time stealing the light im sure this would have become a street classic.
