5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh breeze, 25 April 2015
This review is from: Who Am I (MP3 Download)
Review by Dave Nicholls - -LOUDSTUFF.com

"Mik West doesn’t give a lot away about his music, other than referring to it as rock/blues, and sending us through a link to his website to check out what’s on offer. When it comes to things like this, I always feel that the best route is to let the music do all of the talking that’s needed, so settled back to see what was going on with his record, Who Am I?

Checking out his site we’re treated to samples of all of the tracks from the album, showing what we can expect from each one, from bluesy riffs through to soaring lead lines which capture your attention and keep you listening until the next track comes about. From The Best Love I Ever Had on to Who Am I, Lonely Man, Let’s Get On (With The Rest Of Our Lives) and All The Good Love, each sample showcases what we can expect to hear from the final product and shows why Mik is such a highly regarded blues rock musician in the UK. In total, we’re treated to samples of the entire album, moving from the previous tracks through Play Guitar, Now She Has Gone, Matchsticks, Wheels On My Wagon, Fast Train Comin’, Lucky Man, I Think I Love You, I Think You Know and Gone Too Long – each track showing off the abilities of Mik himself as well as the song writing built into all of the tracks, and the album as a complete picture.

Also featured on his website is a video for Who Am I, showing us what we can expect from the full track and once again, showcasing the abilities on offer. This track is a blues rock track in the truest sense of the word, harking back to a time gone by and keeping you listening throughout with the soft vocals, intricate guitar work, and general sense of calm reflectiveness which abounds throughout. Soft and emotive throughout, this is a track which is built for those calmer moments, times when you can sit back and simply listen to what you’re hearing. Catchy, powerful in the manner in which it connects with you, and oozing with charm – this is an unassuming track which is sure to creep up on you, lure you in, and keep you listening throughout – certainly suggesting that Mik is an artist to keep an eye on if you’re into your soft, slow, bluesy type rock.

There’s something about the style on offer here from Mik West which I’ve really enjoyed hearing, it’s sort of taken me back a few notches, sat me down, calmed me down, and made me think of moments in life which I’ve not thought about in a hell of a long. Creating this sort of emotional reaction to music is something which a lot of bands strive to achieve, but few actually manage – so to hear it like this has been pretty powerful. I know we normally feature heavy bands, hard hitting bands and punk style stuff, but this is like a fresh breeze coming through things, reminding us that sometimes, it’s not all about all out power and distortion, and that sometimes, an act can come along which can remind us why we started listening to music in the first place.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works fine - don't bother with the "installation disk", 11 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This works fine - as I would expect of Samsung - there are cheaper makes available (£7.95 or thereabouts!) which may work as well - but I thought I'd go for this - only just tried it today but has burnt reliably

points to note:-

DVD write speed only 8x - (16x would be better but this seems to be more common on SATA drives)

The "installation disk" is no such thing - it installs trial versions of software burner programs
If you haven't got any burner programs there are plenty of freeware ones

The online manual assumes you are 2 years old - or have lived in a remote area of Borneo all your life - but it stil doesn't mention how you open the drive to put in a disk - there is no button anywhere (actually - you can only do this from your computer )

Edit - there is a tiny button at the back of the top - it's black on a black background so nearly invisible.
I only found out about it by chance - as it's only mentioned on the back of the box

so my advice is don't even bother with the "installation disk"

On windows (I use XP sp3) - just plugging it in installs any necessary drivers - and away you go

My only other complaint so far is that the supplied USB lead is too short to enable me putting the drive anywhere convenient - but I will use an extension lead to achieve this

1.0 out of 5 stars be aware ...., 30 Jan. 2014
I returned a pair of Belkin homeplug devices last August using all their correct labels etc

I'm still trying to get a replacement or credit

like many companies they ask you to ring an 0844 number for service

unreliable products and terrible customer service

If you buy a Belkin product you should pray that it never goes wrong!

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T !!, 26 Dec. 2013
shame we cannot have MINUS ratings

Do not even think about buying this (even at £25 from Argos)

It bears a physical resemblance to a keyboard but that's it

The horrible noise this thing emits could put you off of music for life

it is only good for scrap value

2.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive - but not for me, 19 Oct. 2013
This review is from: MoviePlus X6 (PC) (DVD-ROM)
This is a very comprehensive and stable program - I bought the previous version (X5) but never managed to finish anything with it as it get's very confusing when using multiple tracks

I wanted to "upgrade" to this X6 version which has a slightly better interface - but they only offered me £5 off the price so I didn't bother - it's not significantly different to X5 so should have really been just a few pounds extra

my biggest gripe is that - despite having hundreds of (editable) keyboard shortcuts - there are none for the functions you will be using ALL the time - ie: selecting a clip and selecting the edit button for a clip - there's also no way to navigate to clips directly - the cursor will go to the beginnning of a clip but you must use the mouse to actually select it -

nowadays most software seems to require you to "click on" this and "click on" that - but some of us HATE using a mouse - a keyboard is FAR more efficient - it's faster - and it doesn't give you severe arm ache as I now have after years of reluctantly using the damn mouse

If you are looking for a comprehensive video editor I recommend the Magix movie editor - if you want something simple and fun to use - try the AVS video editor

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, 19 Oct. 2013
A very bloated and sluggish program - an unacceptable delay when starting playback (even for owners of very high spec computers apparently)
Also there's no way of synchronising motion to music - as sound is cut off when using the "advance motion editing" screen

I've tried LOTS of video editing software - if you want a very good comprehensive program I recommend Magix (you can get it quite cheaply) - or if you want something simple to use with good results try AVS video editor
