Selected Poems of G.M.Hopkins
Selected Poems of G.M.Hopkins

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopkins- on a par, or not? with Musil's the vagaries and confusions of the young Torless, or better?, 14 Jan. 2013

Hopkins is a major poet. Having lost my copy, it is a great relief to have him at hand again.

The temper of seventeenth century German literature: An inaugural lecture delivered at University College ,London,7 February 1951
The temper of seventeenth century German literature: An inaugural lecture delivered at University College ,London,7 February 1951
by Leonard Forster
Edition: Unknown Binding

4.0 out of 5 stars A necessary expansion, 14 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Trained and educated on the seventeenth century in the Downing School of English under the intense and enlightening influence of F. R. Leavis and Morris Shapira at Cambridge, I very much regret not having read this study then, because it would have been a very valuable experience and helped to broaden the perspective on the Seventeenth Century altogether. It is an excellent study and I hope lots of readers of English and German poetry have a chance to read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this the people's view ?, 14 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am noexpert on the former Soviet dependencies and can barely comment. However, I have heard different stories from this one about Kazakhstan.
In the upshot it is part of a changing view of the world that interest in emerging powers is necessary.
It is good that an introduction of this kind is available though it may require balance from more informed and less Government centred analyses ?

Leo Armenius
Leo Armenius

Edition: Turtleback
Price: £2.55

5.0 out of 5 stars Andreas Gryphius, a modern dramatist like Hochhuth?, 14 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Leo Armenius (Turtleback)
All of the Reclam series on the Baroque are first-rate, the introductions and commentaries are worth reading. Gryphius himself as one of the major European poets of his time is always worth reading.I dislike the expression " i love it" but with original writers of classical status I guess one goes for five stars.Gryphius' "Leo " as part of his total dramatic production is necessary reading.

The Icy Fire: Five Studies in European Petrarchism
The Icy Fire: Five Studies in European Petrarchism
by Leonard Wilson Forster
Edition: Paperback
Price: £30.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh way to view poetry in Europe?, 14 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Forster's way of looking at things gives a fresh perspective for the English or insular reader looking at poetry in other major languages in Europe, it broadens the approach and makes for circumspection.
Why "I like it" and not " I love it" ? Well " love" is over the top. I think it's a first-rate book and well worth reading both by the specialist and the general reader. I wish I had read Forster on German Baroque (Metaphysical?) literature in the late sixties.

by Gernot Böhme

Price: £16.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Boehme's Ethics in Context in English Translation, 13 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Serious questions- well worth reading and important in an English context to see how the issues from The Holocaust Ethics in Context: The Art of Dealing with Serious Questionsare seriously involved and worked through in dealing with current atrocities in the non-Nazi present.A significant advance on holier than thou breast-beating.

Hitler's Vienna: A Dictator's Apprenticeship
Hitler's Vienna: A Dictator's Apprenticeship

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing research on Vienna as a factior in Hitler's strained ideologies., 21 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hamann's "Hitler's Vienna" is a first class piece of innovative research and should be read together with Schorske's " Fin de siecle Vienna" and David Clay Large " Hitler's Munich ". It discovers the likely roots of Hitler's invocation of a strange new language of resentment and hate.
A very well worthwhile cultural analysis which leads on to further-reaching research, highlighting the roles of the neglected 19/ 2oth C European feuilleton in politics and, as it happens, literature.

Unforgettable voice which expresses the warmth of the man and also gets everything out of the words and melodies balancing the feeling with discipline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Nietzsche in brief- Michael Tanner., 14 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the best, relatively recent, short introductions to Nietzsche. Although the translations used for quotations on occasion provoke despair, the approach is very well ordered (unusual for commentaries on Nietzsche),analytical, discerning and stimulating.
The quotations are well chosen and illustrate the difficulties of reading Nietzsche as well as the pleasures.Well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scruton on Beauty, 14 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Beauty (Hardcover)
A Kant-like analysis of aesthetics in visual Art and Music ( perhaps also with roots in F. R. Leavis' approach to literature ?) Clearly argued and explained, very usefully ilustrated. Helpful and well worth reading. Stimulates by challenging opinion to accept or reject.
