5.0 out of 5 stars ALL THE WAY FROM THE BARNES DELTA, 20 July 2010
This review is from: Down at the Station (Audio CD)
Welcome to the music world of Papa George a bluesman from London via Cyprus,a guitarist of amazing quality and a captivating live performer. And that voice, this is one greatly talented artist who deserves recognition because he is one of the very best around and if you live in the Barnes area of London look out he plays there regularily. He's also a stunning solo performer and has an incredibly good CD 'Live At The Ram Jam' that came out on 2009 joined by Alan Glen on harmonica.Anyway to this set with his band of the wonderful Sam Kelly on drums and Pete Stroud on bass and they don't come better or more solid than these two.Over twelve tracks of Papa George written original songs we are treated to a whole range of quality blues.Apart from the more upbeat songs listen to songs like 'Moonshadows On Coconut Grove' an excellent almost non blues song with a beatiful melody and great guitar playing or crowd favouritehe funky 'Black Jack'.On his website his logo is Blues With A Feeling and that's very true on this very high quality indeed album that also features Roger Cotton on keyboards,Alan Glen on harmonica and back up vocals by two of the best blues singers around in Marcus Malone and Val Cowell.Well produced throughout great and a release that deserves to be heard,a very high quality 21st century blues album by one of the very best in the business,Papa George.

5.0 out of 5 stars ACOUSTIC AND BRILLIANT...A CLASSIC., 20 July 2010
I say to my shame this is the first Jackson Browne CD I've ever purchased. So begs the question why has it taken me so long to catch up with this quite amazing man's music? Well that's easily answered, he recently headlined the Cornbury Festival not far from where I live,so I had to get to hear his music. What I heard was this, if there is a better set this year of such great songs played by such gifted musicians I'll be amazed.Over two discs recorded live in Spain during the 2006 tour he did with David Lindley you are treated to music of such a high quality throughout the two discs, joined by some Spanish guests who add so beautifully to the rest of the set. some of the intros are in Spanish but it doesn't get in the way for one second of the music contained. From the opening 'I'm Alive' through to the closing 'The Voice Next Door' by way of 'Running On Empty','Late For The Sky',''The Crow On The Cradle' also a stunning version of 'Mercury Blues' with some of the warmest and melodic slide guitar I've heard in a very long time. One track worth the price of the set is Kiko Veneno singing 'Tu Tranquilo' all I'll say is it's one of Glen Frey's Eagles songs, but this version is very special and so original.
All in all here we get 18 songs performed to perfection by a group of superb musicians, the voice of Jackson Browne and some of the cream of his best known songs. The encore hears him performing 'Love Is Strange/Stay'.Wonderful !
Do get to hear this disc or discs because I'm sure it will very quickly indeed become a favourite. My first Jackson Browne CD but not my last by a long way...five stars plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars TAKE ME BACK TO NEW ORLEANS !, 20 July 2010
This review is from: Tribal (Audio CD)
Dr. John has over many years now defined the amazing music of New Orleans.Along with piano greats performing in and from the Crescent city since the late forties like Professor Longhair,Fats Domino and Jon Cleary, Dr. John alias Mac Rebbenack has continued to produce great albums continue to be an awesome live performer over many years now.So come 2010 we get a new album with his more recent band Lower 911 and some band this is,from beginning throughout this wonderful set they back up the doctor superbly. We get 16 yes 16 tracks of top new songs covering the whole gammut of his sounds and styles to bring us I feel one of his best albums ever and that is saying something. It's fresh full of great arrangements yet as in most of his releases still has so much to offer.A few added musicians here and there give just the right backing and balance to every track. This is the music of New Orleans by one of it's greatest talents old and yet brand new. This album along with Mac's festival appearances this year could well draw in a new young audience and new fans of the man,but for long time fans this is another wonderful disc full of absolute top quality Dr. John, and shows he's still very full of ideas and still at the very top of his musical game.Absolutely recommended throughout.Good five star set this one certainly is !

I've had the absolute pleasure of having an advance copy of this quite superb album for a few weeks now and let me be honest it's simply great.Chock full of great music, much of it we'll all know very well.Played in a live setting by an absolutely fabulous orchestra and four top vocalists.Everyone who's had a chance to hear this release loves it,i is just not possible to not be taken by a release that is so full of all that feel good factor. From track 1's 'Hooked On Classics' to the closing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' (that alone should guarantee sales to the Liverpool faithful), in between there a medley of pop classics (from artists like Tina Turner and Robbie Williams) and these singers are every bit as good as they are.Country Medley, Games That People Play/Wonderful World , by way of Symphony Of The Seas (a real highlight),via the big band sounds of Where Or When to Dance The Night Away/Hey Baby to an absolutely brilliant Abba Medley , the two young ladies on this track are outstanding as is the band behind them.Fifteen tracks in all, although as some are medley's there's many more songs than that.Whoever's ideas it was to record this live was a masterstroke,it oozes life and vitality and in a year that's seen such lard sales of bands and orchestras as well as high album chart positions this one is better than most of them.Buy this and you'll lift every day ,whether working around the house, sat in the car in the latest traffic jam,or lifting that long driving journey or having friends round for a party. This is music to enjoy again and again.I just can't speak loudly enough to recommend this truly fabulous CD, it deserves huge sales and I'm pretty sure it will and if there's any justice Mike and his wonderfully talented musicians and singers will be packing the big halls and arenas before too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2009 AND ERIC IS STILL THE LIVE GUITAR MASTER !, 13 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I concur with the other reviews this is the best Clapton live DVD I've ever seen. The sound and vision is quite superb, but it's the quality of the music content that stands out throughout this two hour set in Japan.Joined on guitar throughout by Doyle Bramhall II,playing a fair part of the lead stuff as well as some seriously hot slide,in fact on 'Motherless Children' he and Eric are both playing slide and by far is the best version of this song I've ever heard Eric do live. The sit down acoustic blues set alone , including a performance to savor as he and Doyle play 'Travellin' Alone' makes this disc worth getting , the playing is quite amazing between Eric and Doyle joined by Willie Weeks, surely one of the very best bassmen around.
Then in the full band Chris Stainton again and again proves his amazing feel for the music and his playing is really at the very top.On drums and I think one of the fullest and best drummers Eric's ever had in his solo years bands Abe Laboriel Jr. (just listen to his powerful intro to Motherless Children), he adds such power and depth to the whole band sound (although Ian Thomas is pretty hot on the Clapton/Winwood set at MSG). Then we have two excellent backing singers in Sharon White and Michelle Johns.I'd already obtained an excellent DVD of this gig from the USA but all round this one is as they say the absolute bees knees.Eric passed it,not a chance I think he's playing right at the top of his form right now and this set proves it.Songs like 'Tell The Truth','Crossroads','Cocaine', plus blues classics from the likes of Robert Johnson are included plus of course things like 'Wonderful Tonight'.Eric's many fans must surely want a copy of this one, but if you've never seen playing a full concert live then see this because time and time again you know why he has remained at the very top for so many years.Eric must be surely now the very best of them all a guitarist os amazing range, ability and skill. A master putting on a masterclass, this release is a joy to watch and listen to many times over,

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST BOX SET OF BLUES EVER....JUST MAYBE THAT, 13 July 2010
This review is from: Hooker (Audio CD)
Think of the blues masters and likely to come to mind artists such as B B King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy. Each have had truly stunning box sets, now it's the turn of the boogie man himself,John Lee Hooker. What you get here is four discs running right through his amazing career, and it's chock full of absolute gems. The discs are in chronological history right from disc one. Whoever put this set together cheery picked the very best of an astounding and long career,I believe the main one being his daughter and boy she, being an artist of some real quality herself, knew exactly what she was about. You can boogie all night like to his solo work, duets with Robert Cray,Bonnie Raitt,Ry Cooder, Van Morrison, Santana plus three amazing tracks with Canned Heat, including a version of 'Burnin' Hell' with just Canned's harmonica player. Then another dose of boogie magic with Los Lobos and this one really kicks big time. Towards the end of the fourth disc just get to hear his duet with Eric Clapton and then another song with his daughter. There's nothing even near a dud track throughout the set, in fact I've yet to hear such a stunning four disc set of blues anywhere as near as good as this one is by anyone and boy there are some very good one's indeed (B B King's Vintage Years on Ace ***** star magic) or the incredible Buddy Guy set (******) and that includes a fabulous DVD as well.
JLH's memory will live on through such wonderful releases as this one is, an absolute must have certainly for all blues fans, but I'll tell you what put this on and soon everyone in the place will be tapping their feet to Mr. Boogie playing as only he can,a fitting tribute to an absolute music legend...and the legend lives on through HOOKER the box set.

5.0 out of 5 stars MATT SCHOFIELD SIFTIN' THE BLUES !, 13 July 2010
This review is from: Siftin' Thru Ashes (Audio CD)
This release from 2005 is a benchmark album from a guitarist that just goes from strength to strength. He is such an incredible player, not your heavy, loud or blues rock style which has dominated the blues scene for too long for me,but Matt is a craftsman who develops his music writes much of his own material but does,he says, usually add one blues cover to each album because he enjoys playing them ,fair enough, here we get a superb cover of 'The Letter'.Other than that it's all Schofield originals.A key element of his live and recording sound is the remarkable keyboard work of Jonny Henderson who also by using the pedals plays brilliant bass as well.Add to that the solid drumming rhythms of Evan Jenkins and you have a band of rare quality and originality. Not for Matt the SRV or Hendrix sounds although I'm sure he could if he wanted but the style of players like Albert Collins, those who play melodious sounds almost at times merging into jazz type playing but never overplayed the solo's are an extension to the song and not one to be a shortcut to the next extended solo. The songs written for this release are excellent and see's him developing as a songwriter of real depth and quality. Several of the songs from this solid release still are include on his live set's nightly.Tracks like the title one (a real standout) and 'All You Need'(sure to be a favourite among fans and players) kick this very solid album off and sets the way for a very fine release by a major talent and one of the very best guitarists there is with a band as tight and as solid as a rock. This is a release you must get around too, you'll be hooked a great blues release, blues for the 21st century 5 stars and then some!

5.0 out of 5 stars MATT SCHOFIELD TRIO LIVE !, 13 July 2010
This review is from: Live From The Archive (Audio CD)
The more I hear and see Matt Schofield I'm more and more convinced he is one of the best guitarists there is.For him not the loud blues rock although he can rock the blues when the music requires it.His mix of self written material alongside covers of truly classic blues makes him without doubt a major force for the current and future of the blues. As this release comes out he's on a major USA tour with dates being added to an already full schedule. Not only this but he's been involved in a guitar tuition DVD released later this year for the Hal Leonard organisation who lead the world in instructional releases and they only choose the very best, and this came after he was heard on a radio station there.
So what have we here, well it's Matt along with Jonny Henderson himself one of the finest keyboard players around and a very key part of the Matt Schofield live and recoding sound, plus the superb drumming of Evan Jenkins laying solid rhythms for the others to build on.Of Matt's six album releases this is his third live one which proves just how strong he is on stage.his set then was recorded in the Netherlands for a live-to-air broadcast in 2007,and sounds as fresh now as it was when recorded, and the recording quality is very high indeed.Tracks range from one by Matt's guitar hero Albert Collins, the Howlin' wolf favourite 'Sittin' On Top Of The World' and an amazing almost nineteen minute version of 'The Letter'.Tracks from his own albums including the title one from his truly excellent 2005 release 'Siftin' Thru Ashes' as well as 'All You Need' and 'On My Way' from the same album, but live he develops and extends the songs until they take on a new dimension. So we have in total eight great tracks plus a band intro. You really need to hear his playing for yourself to really appreciate what an absolutely great guitar man he is.He is without any doubt the best for many many years, and now he's becoming so popular in the States as well he could very well be the next guitar superstar, he certainly deserves to be and this live release is a more than worthy addition to any music collection.Great voice, superb band and some of the best guitar playing you'll hear by anyone anywhere this year.Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars CRICKETER TO SOUL MAN VERY GGOD TOO !, 7 July 2010
Mark Butcher former England batsman and county captain retired from the game and has become a fine singer/guitarist with a first class band.As they've been playing live dates for the last year or two excellent reviews have been forthcoming from promoters and journalists. Now the album, which has up to now been available from of all places Surrey Cricket Club, but now generally available (do get yours from Amazon though). Don't know what bat he used to play but he's clearly playing a Fender Telecastor guitar and very well too. This is a self written set of songs extremely well performed throughout,he has a very listenable voice and the band are really tight throughout.I'm glad this album is being made generally available because it deserves to do well.Modern blues and soul, touches here and there of sounds that remind of Sam Cooke and Al Green. Mark should do well if this album can be heard on Radio 2 or shows such as Paul Jones Blues Show.
'Songs From The Sun House' great first album from one I think is a major talent, good songs, well played and a worthy addition to any collection..please do get to hear it !

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE AND A GREAT CONCERT BY A GREAT BAND !, 7 July 2010
This review is from: Live From Freedom Hall (Audio CD)
Sometime ago now I purchased the Greatest Hits set by this band, since then it's consistently been played, every track is worth hearing again and again, then came a concert DVD,once again top of the drawer pure southern rock. Now comes this double set CD/DVD live in Kentucky home state of Mohammed Ali.Fifteen tracks by a great band doing their thing and doing it so well. This is not sophisticated rock this is the real deal.A band that quickly sold out UK dates last year thirty odd years on the road ,years of great albums and numerous concert releases.Fifteen tracks here will get any party going, this is live rock at it's finest by a band that get every gig into party mode and if you've as yet not got into the music of Lynyrd Skynyyrd here's a great place to start.Recorded in 2007 but only just released in 2010 don't let that bother you because this is very must a greatest hits and favourites live, but you also realize what a loss Bill Powell their keyboard man who died last year has been. Think of songs like 'Sweet Home Alabama', the favourite of so many and still sounding as good as the day it was first released 'Free Bird', to the wonderfully slide guitar lead 'Ballad Of Curtis Lowe', the rockin' 'Down South Junkin' J J Cale's 'Call Me The Breeze' probably the best version outside of Cale's own, to songs like 'What's Your Name', 'Gimme Three Steps', 'Workin','Travellin' Man' and the very American patriotic anthem 'Red,White And Blue'.The DVD is the full length of the concert the disc 15 tracks of Skynyrd live from the same gig.You need to see and hear this band to really enjoy the music and atmosphere of seeing them best in a live setting.
Get on board and enjoy the ride with one of rocks most enjoyable and greatest exponents doing what they do best...ROCKIN' THE PLACE' KENTUCKY HAD QUITE A NIGHT AND HERE RIGHT NOW YOU CAN SHARE THAT EXPERIENCE, great stuff !
