Braun Silk Epil 9 9-558 Wet & Dry Cordless Epilator with 5 Extras Attachments
Braun Silk Epil 9 9-558 Wet & Dry Cordless Epilator with 5 Extras Attachments
Price: £105.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Many positives, 9 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are a number of positives to report

1 - The light - a really useful addition for ensuring good coverage with the head
2 - The facial epilator works remarkably well - with very little pain
3 - Aesthetically, the sparkly white and blue colour scheme is attractive and distinctive.
4 - Good battery charging and retention

In terms of negatives

1 - Instructions could be much better
2 - The facial epilator requires a standard AA battery (and thus isn't rechargeable like the main unit)

Overall this is a very good set that covers most of your epilating needs - though as with any hair removal technique, it does take time to master. So you might want to try something at an introductory level before moving on to this more upmarket kit

4.0 out of 5 stars Showy but with substance, 8 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a tricky one. On the one hand, it is (on the whole) a well-researched and accessible dictionary that helps to demystify the language of Shakespeare.

On the other, it feels over-produced, over-designed, over-fussy.

I know it is aimed at those just encountering Shakespeare for the first time - but it is not easy on the eye. It is too visually cluttered for my tastes.

It would - however - make a fantastic app!

There are points where the Crystals have over-simplified things (one of my main gripes is about the short piece relating to the various quarto editions of Hamlet which just doesn't reflect the full range of scholarship regarding the so-called bad quarto) - but I can understand that given it is aimed at a younger audience.

There is a little bit of style over substance here - just a little.

It is still a good guide to the language of Shakespeare - but check before you buy. For those wanting something less flashy, get hold of Shakespeare's Words - also by the Crystals. That is truly brilliant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good - but with a big caveat., 7 April 2015

As a powered saw, this is great for some jobs in and around the house and garden. It has a decent build quality and performs above expectations as to the ease and speed of cutting with a range of materials. The battery performance seems strong - with good usage times and a reasonable recharge rate.

Where I have a problem with is with the system itself. It does not come with a battery included. And so you need to pay extra for the battery and the charger. Whilst I appreciate that if you are going to invest in a whole range of products from the system, that can make some sense - as you may not want lots of chargers cluttering up your shed or garage. But in order to get the most out of a rechargeable system, you are going to at least need 1 charger and 2 batteries so that you can always have a spare ready to go. There is nothing worse than being halfway through a job and the battery dies - meaning you have to wait for it to recharge before you can complete it (or go hunting for your manual tools)

So this looks like a decent price - until you factor in the additional costs of chargers and batteries. If you are going to invest in a range of tools from this system - great. But I would think carefully about just buying one tool - there may be other packages that offer better value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, 7 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I had been on the lookout for some additional storage - and so this product came along at just the right time.

Not being a fully paid-up geek, it took me a bit of effort to get it all configured for my home network - but once I had worked out exactly what to do, it was a pretty straightforward process.

The capacity appears to be what is promised on the packaging.

It is not the most aesthetically pleasing of items - perfectly functional, just not a thing of beauty.

Access speed seems good - I will admit that I haven't had cause to try remote access via the android app. But it is good to know that it exists.

It is a well-built piece of kit that so far is offering what I (as a home user with a large collection of music and other entertainment files) need.

Will be intrigued to see what the power usage it over an extended period... but that will only become clear on my next bill!

3.0 out of 5 stars Neat but..., 29 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Alarms are big business. Domestic burglary is - thankfully - in decline. Is that because more people have alarms (or at least the appearance of alarms) or for other reasons, it is hard to tell.

This is a curious, quirky little system. I found it easy enough to install and set-up (using Android rather than Apple)

But you are going to need to buy a lot of accessories to completely cover your property. So yes, it is a neat system at a reasonable price as a tester kit. But it will need much by way of additional spending to provide real peace of mind. How that compares to a more traditional system, I don't know. But this is not a one-box solution to home security.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, 22 Mar. 2015

I seem to be making a habit about talking about light bulbs on here. Given the limited amount of time available for testing (and thus unable to test the lifespan of the bulb), I cannot really comment on the value of it - given that it could take several years for the it to reach the end of its working life!

It is a perfectly serviceable light source - though the quality of light was not as pleasing as some I have tested.

Should it blow sooner than anticipated, I shall return to this and re-mark accordingly!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, 16 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This one really isn't for me

I just couldn't sleep with it in. I was constantly aware of it - and it stopped me sleeping. Which I guess means it also stopped me snoring. Just not in the way they intended.

Clearly I have over-sensitive nostrils - as others have had positive experiences with the device. Sadly it is hard to try before you buy on something like this...

Love Songs: The Hidden History
Love Songs: The Hidden History
by Ted Gioia
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £15.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, 12 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I was slightly worried from the initial pages of the first chapter that this would be too dry and academic in tone. Thankfully my concern was misplaced and it is an engaging and intelligent read.

Yes, there is a lot of underlying scholarship and research in evidence - as is appropriate for this sort of work. But the overall tone is still open enough for the non-academic to enjoy the journey of discovery.

It would make a wonderful basis for a radio documentary series which would have the huge advantage of allowing us to hear examples of the music under discussion.

I found it interesting and worth the investment of my time. Others with an interest in music and song may well do too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, 8 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
If you read the warnings in the instruction booklet, you may never want to go near the product! But, of course, they are having to cover themselves - just in case!

I found it easy to set-up and operate and the heating did have a soothing effect on my aching joints.

It is sometimes a bit tricky to get things in the right position for the most effective heating - but that is more to do with availability of plug sockets and relevant pieces of furniture. Though a slightly longer cable would have made this a lot easier.

There is also a slight issue with the relative locations of the on/off button and the timer - as it is hard not to look at the red light when operating the timer! But again a minor niggle

A helpful and soothing bit of kit

4.0 out of 5 stars Functional, 6 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is not the most exciting phone you will ever use - but it is absolutely serviceable and has enough functions for the vast majority of users.

Landlines are almost retro these days - I know I rarely use one. This is a solid phone with a reasonable build quality and decent buttons.

A good value, basic phone that will fit happily into most homes. Not spectacular - but more the adequate.
