5.0 out of 5 stars A FUTURE CAREER?, 9 Mar. 2015

A good selection of the tools to enable and encourage particularly a youngster to make his/her move into assembling self-build electronic kits. Our grandson for whom this was purchased has made a good start in self-assembly using the soldering iron and other tools provided and has already several projects under his belt. Another James Dyson in the offing?

Who Robbed America?: A Citizen's Guide to the S&L Scandal
Who Robbed America?: A Citizen's Guide to the S&L Scandal
by Michael Waldman
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars TELLS IT AS IT WAS, 9 Mar. 2015

A plethora of books have been written about the Savings & Loan Scandal 0f the 1980's, which as a result of some absolutely appallingly thought through deregulations and completely irresponsible, negligent, and fraudulent behaviour by politicians, regulators, accountants.lawyers and other professionals, cost the taxpayer upwards of $500 billion.

Most of these books deal with the fraudulent activities of individual S & L's and officers, as typified by the Lincoln Savings & Bank and its CEO Charles Keating, Vernon S & L, and Don Dixon and many, many others who participated and profited from the unfettered Crazy Wild West atmosphere kindly handed out on a plate by gullible politicians.

Michael Waldman has produced a straightforward, comprehensive explanation of this scandal - what happened, why it happened and which politicians in Washington were to blame. In comparison with other S & L tales which delve into the individual fraudsters and criminals involved, this account lacks a little of the pace, and intrigue, but does offer a concise, well prepared explanation of this dreadful failure of regulatory commonsense.

Sale Of The Century: The Inside Story of the Second Russian Revolution

Price: £14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A TALE OF A CAPITALIST REVOLTION, 8 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Covering perhaps the single-most important and radical period of events and change in the economic and political history charting the transition from the straight-jacket of communism to the free-wheeling world of capitalism. Although the Young Reformers, particularly Antoly Chubais and Yegor Gaidar, had a very clear vision of their ultimate attainments, the route through was chaotic, by-the-seat-of-the-pants stuff that on reflection was both dangerous and hit and miss.

The book details how the privatisation process was abused allowing the emergence of the extremely rich, powerful oligarchs whose absolute control of Russia is only blunted by the guile, cunning and ruthlessness of Vladamir Putin.

The author, an experienced journalist with on the site working experience being the Moscow bureau chief for the Financial Times during the turbulent 90's whilst the privatisation struggle was in full tilt, has written a first class account of this monumentus transition out of communism into capitalism, warts and all. In the process of the commentary the reader is told of the erratic Boris Yeltsin, many of those who were fleet-footed enough to become fabulously wealthy such as Roman Abramovich, and Boris Berezovsky, together with some of the old Red Barons who were cute enough to become oligarchs themselves such as Viktor Chernomyrdin and Vagit Alekperov.

This is a very good book, well researched, informative, giving a great insight into the current Russia.

5.0 out of 5 stars EUREKA - WE'VE FOUND IT!, 6 Mar. 2015

We wish we had discovered this back treatment machine years ago. Both my wife and I suffer with painful back conditions, her continually, and me intermittently and have tried over the years all the usual remedies including ibuprofen tablets and gel, heat, rest and when desperate quite expensive professional massage and ultrasound. Quite frankly whatever we do it always seems to take about the same period of unpleasant discomfort to clear up.

However with this machine we both got all most complete relief after only several sessions. It is very easy to use, gives a most thorough massage with heat and vibration options over lower, higher or across the whole back. It fits very well onto most chairs, so you can have both treatment and Coronation Street at the same time. Only several professional massage visits saved by using the HoMedics machine will cover it's cost.

Silverado: Neil Bush and the Savings & Loan Scandal
Silverado: Neil Bush and the Savings & Loan Scandal

5.0 out of 5 stars INGENUOUS OR DUPLICITOUS?, 5 Mar. 2015

For an avid reader of all things relating to fraudulent banking scandals and the like, the 80's Savings and Loan debacle in which totally irresponsible deregulation allowed crooks to make large lorry loads of money at the expense of the taxpayer, is, indeed a rich vein of reading for me.

And there were no greater fraudulent taxpayer rip-offs than the Silverado Savings and Loan Bank guided down the paths of swindling and financial treachery by it's boss Michael Wise, CFO Bob Lewis, seemingly unhindered by a Board of Directors which included Neil Bush, son of USA President George Snr, and very close suspect dealings with a gaggle of dubious business men including Ken Good and Bill Walters. Many hundreds of millions of $ were spirited away in a tsunami of spurious property transactions and fraudulent accounting some for the personal benefit of individuals, some just darn frittered away and some to try and prop up the balance sheet of this fast sinking S & L Titanic.

When the inevitable sinking came the jolly old taxpayer, of course picked up the huge tab, and the players in this dodgy game ran for cover, hoping to avoid prison and/or hold on to some of the ill-gotten gains by one means or another, legal or otherwise.

Neil Bush was left to minimise his role in the running of Silverado so as to not cause too much harm to his father's political future. He fell back on the line of excuses that he used in explaining his hitherto lacklustre unsuccessful business career namely 'it was nothing to do with me, nobody should or can expect a director to know what is going on within the company even on the big, important matters'. Nevertheless, whilst lucky to avoid criminal charges he was fined by a regulatory body for his part in this financial chicanery, although it is said that somebody else stumped up his due. It seems that blundering through life, making a fancy living solely on the back of his family's renown, and having your fiscal bloopers magically picked up by somebody else, was his prefered 'modus operandi'.

The author Steven Wilmsen has well used his investigative journalistic background to good effect and has written an informative, highly readable account.

Central Park reigns supreme as the world's greatest urban park and by a very long way. To find, explore, relax in and experience the verdant exuberances of this large island of calm and serenity surrounded by towering edifices, cacophonous noises, and maddening milling humanity is truly wonderous.

The author, a photographer and official historian for The Central Park Conservancy has produced a captivating story of this green miracle complemented by her photographs, and original plans and drawings.

If you cannot get to visit Central Park, and everyone should try if humanly and economically possible, then this publication is next best.

The End of the Euro: The Uneasy Future of the European Union
The End of the Euro: The Uneasy Future of the European Union

5.0 out of 5 stars THE EURO UNMASKED, 1 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Eminent Belgian economist Johan Van Overveldt in this excellent book sets out the rationale leading to the founding of the European Union and the move to create a common currency. It is quite clear that the author regards this currency commonization as fundamentally flawed and doomed to failure contending that a collective monetary system must have tight collective adherence in all matters relating to national budgets, taxation, and banking etc. which at present does not happen.

This book was published in the wake of the Greek 2010 Bailout since when there has been further problems with this country upon a change in government, wanting to renegotiate the deal which has resulted in yet further Global weakening in confidence in the Euro and thrown it's future into some doubt. And Greece is not the only country struggling to come to terms with the consequences of economic and monetary unification. Very few EU members seem totally committed to put aside national interests for the sake of the union.

Mr van Overtveldt is convinced that unless drastic changes are implemented, which he does not believe will happen, then the Euro is doomed which in turn will cast doubts over the future of the current modus operandi of the European Union.

It seems that the real economic powerhouse is Germany, through which every decision has to be channelled for approval, putting that country in 'de facto' control of Europe, something that has eluded it's armies in the past.

A good, concise, interesting and thought provoking book.
