5.0 out of 5 stars NEW FOUND GLORY RETURN IN STYLE!, 2 May 2004
This review is from: All Downhill from Here (Audio CD)
They're back! New album "catalyst" is out soon, and this is the first single to be released from it.
It's typical catchy, melodic pop-punk that you'd expect from NFG, but it's slightly heavier than previous album Sticks and stone's tracks(a theme that apparantly runs with the new album too). This is no bad thing as the song is still typical NFG and sounds more like their older work from their self titled (and in my opinion better) album.
The songs opening guitar riff seems odd to begin with, but flows so well into the song after the first listen that this is soon forgotten.
The animated video is very good as well so check that out if you can.
I look forward to the album that I'm sure will back up this great first single. They deserve a high singles hit.. this could well be it. Fingers crossed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Letters: Every songs a single!, 2 May 2004
This review is from: Dead Letters (Audio CD)
I've never done one of those rate every track reviews before... but this album certainly deserves it. Here's a rundown...
1. FIRST DAY OF MY LIFE A great start instantly showing the lead singers talents with an emotional chorus backed up by some solid bass riffs. 4/5
2. IN THE SHADOWS The top 3 singles chart hit. Daresay you've heard it. Ridiculously catchy guitar riff. 5/5
3. STILL STANDING A slower, mellow start with a strong melodic chorus. Full of emotion. Excellent track. 5/5
4. IN MY LIFE Bon Jovi style bellowing chorus in a solid heavy song. 4/5
5. TIME TO BURN The bass riff in this song is great and reminds me of a video game tune from the past! Combine this with a melodic chorus and you have a stunning track. 5/5
6. GUILTY A catchy, "gets stuck in your head" song! It's the usual quieter verse and bellowing chorus, but works well. 4/5
7. NOT LIKE THE OTHER GIRLS More "balad" (not too much though) than any of the previous songs. Probably one of the weaker tracks but still good. The main problem is that it takes a while to get going (it's over six minutes long!) The calm yet effective chorus is nice though. 3/5
8. THE ONE I LOVE Took me a few listens but now I do like it. It's certainly a grower. It's another catchy chorus that took a while to settle for me. 4/5
9. BACK IN THE PICTURE Pop rock at its best. A slightly different style than usual, but the intro guitar riff that continues into the chorus is pure class. Shows great versatility within the band to try a more pop style track. Great song. 5/5
10. FUNERAL SONG Another grower but now I love it! Really emotional ballad style track with touching lyrics and some haunting instrumental back up. Beautiful! 5/5
11. F F F FALLING A bonus track.. but a great one. Taken from a previous album. This is catchy pop rock style brilliance! 5/5
12. IF YOU EVER Another top bonus track with a very effective chorus. 4/5
13. WHAT EVER Probably the weakest of the bonus tracks, but still good. The strange funk beginning is certainly interesting! 3/5
So as you can see... not a bad song on it! So many potential singles. Gothic rock at its very best. Evanescence are good... this lot are great! STUNNING!

4.0 out of 5 stars Marooned in this band!!, 17 April 2004
This review is from: Songs About Jane (Audio CD)
I first heard this band described as 'the hottest new band from America'.I then tried my hardest not to like them. However i failed and bought this album which is a fine effort.
The first track is a superb mixture of pop-rock with a fantastic melody for the chorus. The second track nicely follows with a slightly more mellow approach showing the talent of the lead singer.
The album maintains a very similar tempo, and occasionaly repeats certain rifts which can annoy.
On the whole a good album throughout showing what a good US band can do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine pop rock indeed!, 24 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Save Yourself (Audio CD)
First impressions of speedways album... very impressive. The first three tracks are very good, with juggernaut being a strong opener, in and out having some sweet guitar work, and single can't turn back being one the albums best tracks......
But not the best! Thinking about you lately and all that matters are two of the later tracks on the album, but are definately the strongest. Both worthy singles. Genie in a bottle is also here, though i've never been a huge fan of this cover in all honesty.
The rest of the album is hardly memorable and is solid if unremarkable. This is an early review after two days listening, but first impressions are of a very good album with 5 or 6 top tracks and some other decent but hardly groundbreaking efforts and the musical genre slightly favouring pop over rock (just).
Well worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for WHERE IS THE LOVE!!, 17 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Who's David [CD 2] (Audio CD)
I'll start by saying this is a very good cd. Not, however, for Who's David (good song, but should have released one of the many better ones from album) This cd is worth the purchase solely for the cover of where is the love. It really is rather good! Staying true to the original in many ways, but with that typical busted style added to it. Other new song is alright as is the enhanced stuff, but buy it for the love!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Top soundtrack from a top film!, 9 Feb. 2004
Firstly, if u aint seen the film yet then GO NOW coz its awesome! This soundtrack is a great collection of rock songs.

The two tracks by No Vacancy stand out, especially "Heal Me, I'm heartsick." Great song. Other classic artists like Led Z and Stevie Nicks are on here as are the Darkness (despite the song not being in the film.)
The tracks by the school of rock themselves begin and end a great album nicely. The sections from the movie (of which there are 3) seperate the album and are quite a laugh to listen to even out of the movie. Some songs aren't as effective without the film to back them up, and ACDC r suprisingly absent. Still, a very good rock soundtrack though.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll WISH you'd read it sooner!, 2 Dec. 2003
This review is from: The Wish List (Hardcover)
The Wish List is an easy, yet highly satisfying read. Devilishly(!) funny at times and with a touching storyline too. It's great that you really feel for the main character almost straight away even though she's aiding in the robbery of an old age pensioner! You know she has underlying issues and you want to find out what they are, and you do really care about whether she makes it to heaven or not, and you'll have a great time finding out and may even shed a tear. Thats clever storytelling.
There's some smart (sometimes controversial!!) jokes to discover and laugh at and the usual smart gadgets, (like in Artemis fowl) mobile phones between heaven and hell spring to mind!!! It's just a top book. Artemis fowl fans will love it, and so will anyone else for that matter... fast paced, laugh out loud reading. Awesome for kids AND adults!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE MUSIC WORLD!!, 2 Dec. 2003
I got this aaaaggees ago and have to say it will always have a place not far from my CD player, thats if it ain't already in it, which it usually is!
This CD really is special. New Found Glory have taken seven of their favourite movies tracks and made them their own! All the songs have that distinctively brilliant New Found Glory sound to them and really are a joy to listen to. "That thing you do" is a great opener and things continue with the same quality. Tracks like "I don't want to miss a thing" and "Everything I do, I do it for you" are recognisable, yet satisfyingly different, as is the brillinant up tempo version of "My heart will go on." "The Glory of Love" also stands out as a very catchy take on "the Karate kid" original.
Overall a great CD if u like the band and even if u don't it's worth checking out. The album is only seven (brilliant!) tracks long, but there's always the repeat button! ENJOY!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's quite a change, but a good change!, 2 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Friday's Child (Audio CD)
Will Young returns with a very different album from his debut. Anyone expecting the pop of the first album is in for a shock. This time Will tries disco, funk and soul in a classy collection.
"Leave right now", the no 1 single, is arguably the best track though. This is no bad thing as that is a top song. Opener "Love the one your with" is also one of the better tracks.
It's a very good album, but the mellow tunes that start to dominate after the first few songs, good as they are, do tend to become "background music" after a while. Still, its a great return from Will and he really seems at home in his new style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good; but they've done better!, 2 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Splinter: +DVD (Audio CD)
The Offspring have returned. Getting straight to the point; this isn't the best album the offspring have come up with. But while it doesn't have the consistency of conspiracy of one, it does have some very good tracks. My favourite has to be the acoustic lead "spare me the details." Slower than the usual offspring stuff, but still a classy tune and u can dig the sentiment! It's good to hear them try some new stuff too like in "worst hangover ever." Brass insruments!!! There are other good songs like "da hui" that follow the typical offspring mould.
"Prison song" is hilarious too!
So it's a good album, but perhaps I was looking forward to it too much for it to really deliver. The DVD ain't great either so you could save a few quid and buy without.
If u like offspring, buy it without a doubt, just don't expect too much.
