5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed, usable, useful, 29 May 2017

Nice design, clear user interface, easy to use, robustly built. Much better user interface than similar products because (1) you can set any start time - it doesn't always have to be 'now'; (2) you can see exactly when it's going to start next.

Allow for 1-2 weeks delivery from China.

2.0 out of 5 stars Author's name wrong on cover, 5 Dec. 2014
The cover has the author as "Arthur Doyle." For me this completely spoils the presentation of the book. He is universally known as "Arthur Conan Doyle," with or without the "Sir."

Unfortunately I didn't spot this on the Amazon photo. But I sent the book back.

Kyocera FS-C51500dn Colour Laser Printer Ref FS-C5150DN

3.0 out of 5 stars Good results, but slow, 5 Aug. 2014
Mine is very slow - frequently pauses saying "adding toner". To print 100 1-sided colour sheets has just taken 30 minutes. And the toner cartridges don't last very long. But no-one else seems to have complained about that here, so maybe this one's a dud.

However, the printed results are good. Paper handling is reliable. It doesn't use much power on standby, so we leave it switched on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing, 6 Jun. 2014

He explains some of the most advanced ideas on the edge of physicists' understanding of the world we live in. And, amazingly, manages to do it in words that are comprehensible and interesting to non-scientists. The physics is leavened with some material about his own personal journey and about his colleagues.

Most amazing though is the conclusion he presents: That the history of the universe - or more accurately, the set of all possible histories of all the possible universes - is a pattern that arises naturally from mathematics, in the same way that those famous pictures of Mandelbrot and Julia sets have infinite complexities all arising from a simple formula.

At present many physicists are sceptical of this model. But they tend to be the older ones! I have a feeling that in 20 or 30 years' time, the view that Tegmark and others are developing will be pretty much the standard. That's the way physical theories develop.

Feels OK in the hand, never given any problems, buttons click satisfyingly.

I run a series of talks in a village hall, where we have about two talks per month. Every visiting speaker finds this easy and natural to operate.

I chose this one for the integrated shutter, which works OK and keeps the wind out when it's switched off.

Unfortunately the fan has quite a pronounced whine - not conducive to a relaxing bath!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but no use for podcasts., 8 May 2012

This is a nice product, and works well on the whole. Very easy to set up. Decent tone, given that it's a single built-in speaker, but you can plug in a stereo system to get better sound.

We use it for internet radio because our conventional radio reception is poor and DAB non-existent (in rural Wales).

The big pain is its behaviour with podcasts. If there's any break in reception - for example, if there's heavy net traffic - it stops and either goes back to the beginning or just doesn't recover. Other players would say "buffering" and eventually resume where they left off. There's no way to fast forward, so you have to listen to the start of the podcast again. The chance of getting to the end of a half-hour programme isn't great. Even Melvyn Bragg gets a bit tiresome after five repetitions.

On its other features though, I recommend it.

And, since it has auto-updates, I'm looking forward to the day when they fix the podcasts. Top of the backlog, guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting satire, 7 Jan. 2011

This review is from: A Week in December (Paperback)
This is a satire, and one that made me laugh.

As a satire, its characters are caricatures, drawn simply rather than deeply. But the principal theme of the book, as I read it, are the parallels between religious inspiration, schizophrenia, and obsession. Faulks points out that the founders of many religions heard stern commands from what they believed was the voice of God; and that these days, such people are diagnosed as schizophrenics. They are these days seen as isolated from reality - just like another species, the financiers who traded the complex deals, far removed from the finance of actual work and materials, that resulted in the banking crash of 2008-9.

Very enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the real original, 26 April 2004

Just to add a clarification to my original review -- this is theunadulterated whale song -- no music superposed or any other human stuff(other than some ship's engine noise in the far distance on onetrack).
Snatches of these recordings have appeared in other places overthe years -- in rock tracks, film soundtracks, and underneath whimsicalhuman music. I prefer just to listen to the whales!
