1.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled..., 10 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I haven't read the book yet, I received it today...I am writing the review to inform other readers that the book advertised is not this one, it is part of it.
When I pre-ordered it stated 345 pages - The Fall of the Governor. This book is 245 pages long and now titled - The Fall of the Governor PART ONE....Perhaps the creators realised at the last minute that we (the readers) would discover the fate of The Governor before Season 4 started or maybe they think we are a bunch of zombies and won't notice the rip off...

Appalling treatment of fans...As for Amazon, they notified me on Wednesday that the original pre-order had been dispatched...Customer service here I come...

Apocalypse of the Dead
Apocalypse of the Dead
by Joe McKinny
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting better..., 24 Sept. 2013
The action was frantic from the start and introduced some interesting and complex characters. The story had a strong religious theme with a preacher (Jasper) who was able to walk among the dead without threat, he was also able to arrange transport, building supplies etc in a world that was devastated. He was unconvincing - he had a strong cult following and they set up a village away from the cities. My favourite character Michael Barnes was strong, ruthless and efficient. Nate was immune to a zombie bite and cast as a possible cure for the infection. Ed and Billy's relationship was a highlight of the story.

Several groups make their way to the safety of the Grasslands, each progressing through a series of near misses and losses. Some of the coincidences in the story were less believable than a Zombie Apocalypse but I'll let the reader work those out.

Without trying to spoil the book, the last 100 pages were a let down. Michael Barnes who struck me as independent and sceptical was brainwashed in a sentence. It sort of lost its way a bit.

Overall it was better than Dead City and hopefully Flesheaters will improve the story again. Not great but not bad either.

The price attracted me to this product...it looks and prints exactly the same as the branded and much more expensive one. I just put it in and it worked straight away. The printing quality is excellent once it settles in after a couple of prints. I will definitely buy again. Also very quick service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Oscar?, 25 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Skyfall [DVD] (DVD)
I watched this movie at the cinema and thought it was good but it seemed distant from the previous two. I watched it again on DVD and without doubt it is the best Bond movie - the acting is superb.

Craig is intense, Dench is detached and Bardem is casual as the villain - all three should be walking away with Oscars. Fiennes, Harris and Finney add extra quality in their cameos.

The story is about M's past returning to haunt her in the shape of arch villain Silva and Bond returning from the dead.

The action is intense, the dialogue sharp and the music atmospheric.

If there was ever a doubt about the Bond franchise - Skyfall puts an end to all doubts.

Watch it, enjoy it and a few days later start the process all over.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Read..., 11 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Summer Guest (Paperback)
The Summer Guest is not a book I would normally read but I wanted to get a feel for Justin Cronin's writing before I tackle The Passage. I also found the synopsis on the back cover interesting.

*No Spoilers*

The story focuses on a group of people who have a strong attachment to a summer retreat. Joe and Lucy are married, Kate is their daughter, Jordan is the help who is also in love with Kate and then you have Harry. The story is quite pedestrian in the respect it is told with a great deal of precision but never getting out of first gear. It is told from the present day to flashbacks of when all the characters were younger.

It is essentially a love story spread across about three decades (although the story stretches much further) from Joe's birth to the birth of Kate's daughter. It is very much a story of compassion, warmth, loyalty and a special bond between father and daughter.

The dialogue between characters is excellent.

There is a twist but if you follow the story close it becomes apparent halfway through. I don't remember a sentence of bad feeling through the story.

I would have given five stars but for the pace of the storytelling. It is a book that needs perseverance but it is well worth it in the end, that is from a father's point of view.

Exit Kingdom

4.0 out of 5 stars More Prequel than Sequel, 20 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Exit Kingdom (Hardcover)
Set in the same world as The Reapers are the Angels and told by Moses Todd, the man from The Reapers. The tale is told while Todd sits by a camp-fire of travellers. He tells the story of him and his brother Abe (the same brother Temple killed in The Reapers). Along their way they pick up a female, she is a complex character but very much a female Moses Todd. The story is based around a journey or purpose the three set out on, Moses is very aware of the threat his brother carries amongst female survivors, at times he almost despises his brother but he feels a sibling duty to protect him. The Vestal Amata, the female of the group has a unique ability, she is immune to the dead, they have no inclination to eat her.

The story has traces of originality but it was never in danger of surpassing the original. Religion or belief or simple faith are themes that run consistently through the story. For me as in the first book, the interactions and conversations between the characters are what make this another superb read.

In my review of The Reapers, I mentioned a prequel and sequel would be welcomed - Bell has delivered the prequel, I look forward to the conclusion of Moses Todd.
