1.0 out of 5 stars No quality control...., 1 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Turned up with a large white streak all along the door where the black colour hadn't taken during the manufacturing process. How on earth it left the factory I've no idea. Obviously quality control is non-existent. We whacked it straight back and will buy something else. We considered ourselves lucky because even if perfect, it would have kind of been like buying a big black coffin and sticking it on the wall! As an aside, Better Bathrooms were fine to deal with and return and refund were processed promptly.

Excellent read. Highlights the poverty of the 1950s experienced in many parts of the UK but particularly Notting Hill and shows Johnson to be irrepressible in the face of many many challenges.

The book is mildly interesting as a sociological snapshot of life in Pakistan - which is primitive, medieval, corrupt, and nasty. The overriding impression is of an uneducated misogynistic society with 50 million illiterates but whose military leaders live a life of luxury and spend what money there is on a few nuclear weapon baubles to make them feel like big men. The overall impression is of a wretched, petty, superstitious society with very little future. Grim.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated and overrated...., 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lucky Jim (Paperback)
Unreal characters that say and do illogical, nonsensical things. Vaguely amusing. Overrated and definitely of its time. You can see where young Amis got his style from, particularly in the Rachel Papers. Both father and son have very little idea about human nature. Conversations and actions bear little relation to folks in the real world and you can spot the ending a mile off.

it's a classic. read it. a lot of the subject matter is common sense skulduggery but the key is no one had written this sort of thing before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be transported to a different time, 2 April 2014

The Card is an entertaining read. You're rooting for the hero who you suspect is going to come up trumps at every turn. My enjoyment came from reading about the early twentieth century in the five towns around Stoke.
