5.0 out of 5 stars and I'm glad I've finally caught up with it, 7 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although I've watched a lot of WW2 movies, this one somehow passed me by until now, and I'm glad I've finally caught up with it. The story is highly improbable, but there's lots of excitement and action along the way, with Oliver Reed turning in a convincing performance as an escaped POW leading an elephant to freedom through all kinds of adventures in the last months of the war. The picture and sound quality are excellent, and the film also benefits considerably from great locations in southern Germany and Austria. When this DVD arrived and I saw the writing on the cover written in Korean I feared the worst, half expecting the film to be a substandard copy, but this was not the case. The DVD proved to be excellent quality, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

In the Ring With Jack Johnson - Part II: The Reign

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Ring With Jack Johnson - Part 2, 13 Jan. 2016
This monumental study of world heavyweight champion Jack Johnson's title reign, 1908-1915, must be the definitive work on this subject. The book focuses mainly on Johnson's title defences and non-title matches, and goes into an incredible amount of detail from contemporary sources that really take the reader back in time. Johnson's colourful and controversial life outside the ring during his time as world champion is touched upon in the context of this story, though the book is chiefly concerned throughout with his prowess and achievements in the ring. This magnificent work has been thoroughly researched, has lots of photographs and illustrations, and Adam Pollack is to be congratulated on his amazing attention to detail. Boxing historians will surely love this important study of the legend that is Jack Johnson. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars whose adventures would surely make a great movie. Yes, 8 Jun. 2015

Having followed boxing for over 50 years I thought I knew much about John L Sullivan, boxing's original superstar, until I read this biography. Mr Klein really goes into detail about the life and times of the famous Boston Strong Boy, whose adventures would surely make a great movie. Yes, I know there was a film made in the 1940s - The Great John L - but the scriptwriter never had access to this book, which would have improved that movie no end. This biography really take the reader back into Sullivan's time, and the quality of the writing is exceptional as boxing biographies go. In 1889 Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in a heavyweight title defence in a staggering 75 rounds, and I could almost feel the exhaustion as I read the account, based on what actually happened that day in Mississippi. John L Sullivan was hero worshipped by millions, but he was a flawed hero, and his life is revealed in a warts and all biography that will surely be of great interest to all boxing enthusiasts. Highly recommended.

Jack Sharkey: A Heavyweight Champion's Untold Story

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Sharkey biography, 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jack Sharkey, world heavyweight champion 1932/33, has long been one of boxing's forgotten champions, and this biography is a welcome addition to an ever expanding fight game literature. James Curl does a great job of describing the life and career of Jack Sharkey, a man whose mercurial temperament caused him to be involved in some controversial bouts. Unlike many fighters who ended up troubled and penniless, Sharkey prospered when his boxing career ended, had a happy family life, kept himself in good physical condition, and lived into his 90s. He wrote a best selling book about fly fishing, his great passion, and was respected by many in the fight game for his achievements. One of Sharkey's most controversial contests was his 1927 match with former champion Jack Dempsey, who sais in his autobiography that for 5 rounds Sharkey have him "living hell" and was as good as any fighter he ever faced. In the 7th Dempsey began throwing body punches, and when Sharkey complained to the referee "Hey, he's hitting me low", Dempsey flattened him for the full count. They never fought again, but both lived long lives, and when Sharkey was told that Dempsey had died, commented "So, I finally beat the bastard!" This book is an excellent read, and an uplifting story of an inconsistent though occasionally brilliant boxer that takes the reader back to a bygone era of hard times and hard men. Recommended.

This CD is a disappointment as only the first 11 tracks - the ones by the Gallowglass Ceili Band - are listenable, whilst the remaining 11 tracks, by the Tulla Ceili Band, all have poor sound quality. The Gallowglass tracks, a mixture of marches, reels, set dance tunes, waltzes, jigs, and hornpipes, are very good listening, played by this legendary ceili band. As for the Tulla tracks - oh, dear, why did the record company put these on the CD without re-mastering them? They spoil what should have been a very good CD. At least you can stop when you reach track 12. Had they put the Tulla tracks on before the Gallowglass, it would have meant skipping over them, which would have been a nuisance each time.

I really enjoyed this film, despite some of the unfavourable critical reviews I've read. Malcolm McDowell played the devious though lucky Flashman, and Oliver Reed puts in one of his typically brooding performances, this time as Germany's Bismarck. Henry Cooper appears in one scene as the real life heavyweight champion turned MP John Gully, flooring Reed's Bismarck with his famous left hook in an impromptu boxing match. There were many convincing action sequences throughout the film, great locations and costumes, and a story that rattled along at a cracking pace, though I did find the plot a bit puzzling towards the end. But all in all, there was enough action and visuals to carry the day, and I'm glad I bought this DVD.

Joe Choynski was the first significant Jewish boxer, and belongs to the group of 'nearly men' who might have been a world champion given the chance. He shared the ring with John L Sullivan, Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, James Jeffries, Marvin Hart and Jack Johnson. His surprise 3rd round KO of Johnson was one of Choynski's career highlights, and led to him tutoring the future champion during a spell they spent in jail together after their bout, teaching Jack some of his tricks. This book tells everything there is to know about Choynski's life and times, and lengthy boxing career. You also learn much about his contemporaries such as Sullivan, Corbett, Peter Jackson, Peter Maher, Kid McCoy, Johnson, Jeffries, etc, and the book is essential reading for anyone interested in heavyweight boxing in America in the pre-Jack Dempsey era. It is very well researched, with many illustrations, and although expensive to buy, at a whopping 799 pages and in hardback, is worth the money. Recommended.

Irish Dance is one the best recordings of Irish trad music I've heard in a long time. Produced in America, but as Irish as they come, the playing is superior to most other CDs of this type, with the style, tempo and variation of instruments just right. The sound quality and balance of instruments in the studio are also spot on. Highly recommended.

'Bottoms Up!' was the film version of the BBC TV 'Whacko' comedy, made in 1960, and at least as good as the television show. A very funny film, with lots of action sequences, and crisply directed. Excellent entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fighting Men of London, by Alex Daley, 24 Jun. 2014

I've just read this recently published book, and found it riveting. As a Mancunian I must admit that I know precious little about most of the London boxers of yesteryear so it was mostly all new to me, and an education. The stories of these fighting men, each told through interviews, give a fascinating insight into how professional boxing operated in the pre and post war years, when times were hard, and boxing was a very competitive game indeed. Highly recommended!!
