5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable to read and good insights, 17 Mar. 2013
This is the first book I've read on North Korea. The Economist recommended this a few weeks ago. Very easy to read. I believe that the author researched this thoroughly. However it's not wonkish in any way. You get the impression that the author did not struggle with writing as it reads very well, is well laid out and avoids appealing to the views that many of us in the west have of the DPRK. His insights into the economic and political life of those he met are very pertinent given that all we hope to do in the west is wait for a collapse from within. The DPRK might be a greater concern than Iran.

From CIE to IR: The Changing Face of Ireland's Railways
From CIE to IR: The Changing Face of Ireland's Railways
by Mark Darby
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Well worth buying, 14 Jun. 2012
I have to agree with the previous reviews, this is an excellent book. I am far from being an expert and I learnt quiet a bit from this book. The photography is evocative and the text is very readable. It certainly is not a book which only the anoraks could enjoy. I found that those who happened to read and were not 'railway nuts' found it to be interesting.

The only downside is that you finish it wanting more! Another edition in this series please!

Modern Land Law
Modern Land Law

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Foundation, 14 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Modern Land Law (Paperback)
I purchased this book as I wanted a good basic understanding of UK land Law and as I am based in Ireland, it is useful to gain this perspective.

Recently I had to return to this book as I was writing on the reforms which took place in Ireland and I found it refreshing to read a text that is not overly simplistic or overly complicated.

I think most undergraduates would understand this book or its later editions easily and it would provide a good basic understanding of the principles of real property.

However, while the book is quite broad in scope there are many areas where students would need to refer to works which address specific topics in more detail.

Overall a good foundation for further study.

Modelling Irish Railways
Modelling Irish Railways
by Stephen Johnson
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Irish Modellers, 14 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm fairly new to Irish railway modelling and I wanted to get a book that gave some guidance on how to convert HO/OO locos and rolling stock for use with the new Murphy Models locos etc.

So the book was published in 2004 and there are many quite good photos of completed kits (MIR SSR) and some helpful hints on simple conversion like using the Lima Seacow/Sealion as a base for an NIR ballast hopper.

The best points are the pictures. The history etc is something that you can get from the various books on Irish railway history. In many respects the role of this book has been taken over by internet forums, but it is still worth getting as there are many detailed images of model steam locos.

The bad points are the descriptions on how to convert OO locos from hornby etc to represent Irish versions. These instructions are in text only and are not clear.

Well worth it overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars X-files its not, 13 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great book, if you are looking for x-files type case studies, you wont find it here. A great job is done at explaining and disproofing so many myths..... I like it. A pity that not more was made about the Aurora plane that apparantly causes a lot of mistaken sightings. A very readable book and decent research. Some spooky pics and stuff...check out the Solway Spaceman....
