5.0 out of 5 stars YOU BETTER....YOU BET!, 14 Aug. 2008

Stan Bowles was one of THE iconic faces of seventies English football, alongside the likes of Peter Osgood, Tony Currie and Charlie George. A maverick in the truest sense of the word. He was a skilful player, a dribbler and a goal-scorer. He broke the British record for European goals in a season back in 1976/77, during QPR`s UEFA Cup run. The only problem for Stan and those others is they were in the shadow of THE top dog at the time, one George Best. Best gets a mention in this book of course.
Stan`s partner-in-crime was Don Shanks and their merry escapades make for marvellous entertainment, there is hardly a dull page in the whole book with loads of laugh out loud moments. If you like your football books to contain loads of anecdotes and opinions this is the book for you. It has some of the funniest I have ever read, and it is also the only footballer`s biography I can think of that mentions the Shoot To Kill inquiry and Thin Lizzy. Also, unlike many such books, Stan doesn`t bore us with his `romantic` laisons, he makes it quite clear his main obsession was betting, followed closely by betting. Although earning good money by the standards of the day, he doesn`t worship filthy lucre but rather regards it as a means to an end. More visits to the dog track. A brilliant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD COVERAGE FROM THE PAST., 10 Aug. 2008
I am not a Chelsea fan, but this seemed like a good way to catch some old games and I have to say it is a good watch. Unlike some releases which promise old classic games and then go all the way back to 1996, this video actually contains matches from many, many years ago. Each game has original commentary and it is well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUCKING THE BALL IN!, 10 Aug. 2008
This dvd is a great reminder of a fantastic night for all Evertonians. The title of my review sums it up really, an emotional roller-coaster of a game when Everton had to score twice to reach the Final after Bayern snatched an away goal at Goodison. The complete match, with original (pre-Sky) Martin Tyler commentary, this game was, incredibly, not screened live at the time. However it WAS the 1984/85 season, so we had to rely on good old Peter Jones and Bryon Butler on the radio. ITV did screen highlights that evening and this dvd is obviously the master recording of that. The game is in standard, 4:3 picture and that suits me fine. There are some great interviews with the men of `85, an Everton team that was only denied possible European Cup glory the following season by the actions of a certain team`s `supporters` a few weeks later in Belgiun...but we won`t go into THAT. Brilliant stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Best speaks....., 20 July 2008
I already have the bulk of this, on both vhs and dvd. I had recorded the interview he gave to Rodney Marsh and Paul Breen-Turner for Talksport, but lost the tape, so had to buy this. The interview is really the best part of it, the documentary from 1986 is a standard one, although it is curious to see George`s ex-manager on it, a man who didn`t get a mention in any of George`s books after their fall out. UTV made the documentary in question and it covers all the necessary bases....for 1986.
As I said, well worth getting just to see and hear GB a matter of months before his sad demise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FINE SOUVENIR., 14 July 2008

Harry Harris has put together a thorough review of the 2006 World Cup Finals, including coverage of England`s road to qualification, the announcement that Sven would be leaving after the Finals and the saga of Rooney`s foot. Every single day of the tournament gets it`s own section in a brightly coloured way, Harry discusses the games, includes full line-ups, scorers, the works. As a momento of Italy`s brilliant triumph it couldn`t be bettered.

5.0 out of 5 stars His favourite word was`s*ithouse`!, 9 July 2008

This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I am old enough to remember Clough at his managerial peak in the seventies. What he managed to achieve at two relatively small clubs will never be repeated. Also, I had often wondered why he and his friend/assistant Peter Taylor fell out and Duncan Hamilton explains the whole sorry tale. Do yourself a favour and buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paddy Whacks....quite a few people, actually., 28 Jun. 2008
This is a really good read, Paddy Crerand`s life story is full of top quality football matches, trips abroad and punch ups! You can take the boy out of the Gorbals but, well, you know the rest. Paddy also cuts through a lot of the pc bull in some other books by describing in detail the injustice he faced on his visits back to Ireland, his real home. In fact he sums up the political problems faced by Catholics in a way not normally seen in a footballer`s book. The B Specials may be a mystery to the vast majority of readers but any Irish person resding the book will be only too aware of their malign presence. Crerand played for two massive clubs, Celtic and United. He won League championship, FA Cup and European Cup medals. And he put George Best up...for five days. His description of United`s post 1968 disintregation is one of the best parts of the whole tome. Jock Stein`s description of Tommy Docherty certainly caught my eye. Crerand`s relationship with `The Doc`takes up a good chunk of the latter part of his career and is very interesting. Brilliant read.

Every goal from the 2002 World Cup, no nonsense, just straight forward entertainment. Commentary is from the original BBC coverage so we get to hear Motty going on about sausages sizzling when Michael Owen scores the opening goal in the Quarter Final against eventual Champs Brazil. Full marks.

5.0 out of 5 stars COME ON ITALY!!, 27 Mar. 2008
This is a very good dvd, it contains loads of exciting action from all the Championships, and reminded me a little of the Legend Of The FIFA World Cup set. Maybe it`s because Gabriel Clarke is the narrator? Anyway his voice will be familiar to most football fans and he does a good enough job. There are interviews with some of the Tournament`s greatest names (and David Seaman...only joking, England fans, your 1996 glories are covered here!)and it is an excellent addition to anyone`s collection. The story ends at EURO 2000,( with David Trexeguet`s robbery of the Azzurri....only joking, France supporters!)which is no bad thing as Italy had a terrible 2004. The footage is, thankfully, taken from the normal tv footage and not from weird angles. Full marks from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bally good show., 23 Mar. 2008

This is comedy heaven, filled with memorable catch-phrases, strong characters and familiar faces, the props and sets are amazing. We are transported back to the nineteen- twenties, to the home of Lord Meldrum and his various family members. We also see life through the eyes of the servants, I really can`t find a bad thing to say about this. Like a fellow reviewer, I felt this was far superior to Hi De Hi. You will recognise loads of people, including Paul Shane and co, to the British (silly ass!) officers from It Ain`t Half Hot Mum, right down to the annoying air raid warden from Dad`s Army. Wonderful stuff.
