A loveless marriage, two very different sons and a mean and abusive husband.
Was drawn into this book immediately and couldn't put it down.
Loved the French part of the book. This is a feel good story, read it and you may even become a more positive person.

What a laugh this book was...especially if you can't help laughing at toilet humour!
With the house renovation.....been there done that several times. Was good to reminisce on that though I didn't quite understand why you would pay builders and then help them with the work.

Loved the deceased grandmas femme fetale past. The best scenes involved lovely Pat the Cow. Glad she got a good home in the end.

Though the ending was entirely predictable it gave you a nice feeling. Great story and well worth a read.

A brilliant read even though I didn't think I would have been interested in old Amsterdam.
Excellent characters and interesting from the first page. So glad that I read it. Will recommend to all.
Only sorry that the book is finished.

This book was easy to read, never boring and for those of us who have had a mother like this there was a great empathy. So well written and the descriptions of everyday things were a joy to read.
High recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard life for a wee boy, 23 April 2015

I know the east coast of fife and in the future when I regularly pass these villages I will view them in a different light. I also spent many years teaching in a unit full of boys like sandy So volatile and often violent but no wonder. Kids like this don't stand a chance in hell. I'm glad he found some love from the wee woman with the sticks and although his auntie and uncle may have loved him they would never be able to give him the care he deserved. Poor sandy.....hope he has found love and happiness.

A beautifully written book with quite an abrupt ending. I was hoping that he would find a long term partner.
So strange that the parents harboured all these lies.....but that's parents for you. I'd like to think that they were only protecting him.
Wonder what his life is like now.......New book?

4.0 out of 5 stars Life in a single end., 16 Jan. 2015

Must have been a hard life. I had experience of the stairhead lavvy from a student party in the 70s. Bed recess was a common thing and several kids in the one bed. Life had to be better for those of limited means once a move was made to a new housing estate like Castlemilk. I lived in a place called Drumchapel. Fresh air, countryside......I thought that it was great. Had to share a bedroom with a brother and sister until I was 16. My mum always made us talk posh. Didn't do me any harm, went on to be a teacher then a business woman. Bought a 26 room house in the 80s. Thanks to a good education and the power of positive thinking. Enjoyed this book but an abrupt end .Loved the description of the room and kitchen..... why would they expect to fall their to all the furniture.

Thank goodness someone can deal with very sick people and still have a sense of humour. How can he put up with so many drunks and time wasters? He has even helped to save a cats life....what a star.

Very interesting account of sick and sick in the head people. Honestly don't know how he does the job as most folk don't seem to appreciate his skills.
When I am an old lady I will trust someone like him if I need help. Meanwhile I will stay healthy and keep on dancing.
Keep up the good work Tom Reynolds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable book, 19 Dec. 2014

A horrific childhood due to the most cruel parents. Dressed in filthy ragged clothes and even being made to share pairs of knickers with a spiteful sister, it's a wonder that this poor girl made anything out of her life
