4.0 out of 5 stars No fair...its too good!, 2 Jun. 2016
This review is from: The Fair Fight (Paperback)
“The Fair Fight” is, I think, just about the best-written novel I have read in five years. The depiction of the situation and the characterisation is very clearly and economically done with great economy of effort. Even the title is really clever.

It’s divided into sections, each taking the point of view of one of the principal characters. This is a technique that has received some criticism, but it works really well here, forcing the reader to constantly reinterpret characters and situations as the story progresses..

Our heroines are Ruth, the ugly duckling child of a brothel who has a talent for pugilism; and Lottie, a smallpox-ravaged younger sister made a non-entity by the rigid social conventions of the well-to-do in this time period. Ranged against them are three men who have unearned power and money aplenty, but waste it all through serious character flaws. Lottie’s elder brother is an alcoholic; his gay lover is an inveterate gambler, and their friend Granville Dryer masks personal cowardice with blood lust. The novel charts the rise of the former and the decline of the latter.

So this is a tale of morality and female empowerment. It is so cleverly and wonderfully written that its only on reflection you realise that it does fall into the classic feminist art trap of hideously overstating its case. All the male characters are despicable, weak or (at best) dumb. All the female characters have inner untapped resources of determination, cunning and feisty that enable them to eventually break free from society induced oppression. However, although I personally disagree with its contentions, I have to admit "the fair fight" really is an excellent read, and one that will stay with you for a long time.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
They are ok, but the figures are very curiously made. Rather than the riders and the horses being cast separately and having to put one on the other, the horse models include the lower half of the rider as well - so the rider model is only the top half and has to be glued onto the lower part, which isnt is as strong as having the complete rider separate. Having only half a model makes it very small and fiddly, particularly as some of them have arms cast as a third component. The metal isnt top quality either - one arm dropped off with the slightest pressure. OTOH, the horses are very well done indeed.

Good adventure. Quinton is a bit of wet lettuce as a hero though. Its the support cast that does all the running.
