For (soccer) history buffs or just trivia hounds this is richly rewarding resource. It is obviously well researched and written in an easy style.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, 13 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a referee instructor and student of the Laws of the Game (LOTG) I was eager to open a recent publication that purported to be, however irreverent, "Guide to the Laws of the Game". By page 30 I was still waiting for some Law related substance. Instead it was an incongruous flight of ideas written under chapter heading of the LOTG. E.g., under Law 5: The Referee all I found was managers in a difficult to read and follow style. I am at page 84 (of 276) and will force myself to peruse it. At this point I have found no redeeming aspect but will happily eat crow if in the next 192 pages I might be proven wrong. This latter possibility elicited the second star.

4.0 out of 5 stars myths of the laws, 7 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a well researched work, interesting read. It failed to get the fifth star for a gross misquote of the Penalty Kick Law on page 326.Describing a shot that hit the bar then bounced into goal from the back of the goalkeeper: "The rules state clearly that once the forward motion of the ball ceased, the penalty is considered complete." WRONG. Law 14 states: "...a goal is awarded, if before [ending up in goal] the ball touches either or both of the goalposts and/or the crossbar and/or the goalkeeper."

Excellent source for those interested in sports history; less interesting for the general reader - that is why the 5th star fell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foul conventional wisdom, 14 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have a modicum of open-mindedness, and distrust for dogmas and established truths, this is a book for you. Thought provoking without conspiracy theory, it challenges long-parroted "facts" of sports. Excerpts from the table of contents: Sports and Stupidity; Cheating and Judgementalism; Sport, Lies and Self-Deceit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monument to football history, 28 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As the subtitle indicates, this work documents the events that formed the game of association football - soccer. For the student of the game, this tome, for the first time since 1863, sheds light on all the factual information of the first 20 years, making up for all the various deficiencies of preceding publications. It is worthy of perusal of the attentive type.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with information, 17 Jun. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is packed full of historical and statistical information useful even to the serious student of the Game; a good resource and reference work. For this reason the inaccuracies are annoying. The "goal area", that is missing in the field description, is identified on the diagram as "Six-yard Box". The book is 2010 vintage, yet it writes that the winner of the toss has the option of kick-off or or goal to attack - not so since 1997. It perpetuates some myths, such as: -the referee must whistle for the taking of a free kick, - the captain is entitled to communicate with the referee and - tackles from behind are illegal. It also left out second caution from the list of sending-off offenses.
Nevertheless it is a good acquisition. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Referee resource, 24 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is an excellent instructional tool for entry and midlevel referees. It has an easy to follow format of diagrams, lists and questions (with answers). Whenever a book is based on the current Laws of the Game some parts are likely to become passe as the Laws are modified. The remarkable permanence of the Laws and the durable advice in this work give assurance that this book retains its relevance.
Referee Instructor.
