5.0 out of 5 stars what once was lost, now is found..., 14 April 2014

This review is from: SAUDADE (Audio CD)
I was dreaming of the past, longing for something lost - a little melancony - saudade...
And then I listened to this - reminiscent of Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim in their classic years - cool, relaxed, genuine bossa.
Some of the vocals evocative, delivered with the innocence and allure of Astrud Gilberto.
But this ain't no steal - theft from those halcyon years, it is a comtemporary take of the genre.
In 'Saudade' - Thievery Corporation have captured the very essence and nuance of authentic bossa nova.
They have made yesterday's music real for today.

5.0 out of 5 stars blood meridian..., 7 Oct. 2013
This review is from: The Counselor (Hardcover)
Cormac McCarthy is the kind of dark writer that appeals to me.
By chance, I found and bought this at an airport.
The first read didn't last the flight, I didn't notice the landing on the second reading - so absorbed
Simple language, minimum words fire the imagination to maximum effect - felt like I was watching the movie.
Sexy, funny, brutal - matter of fact, totally real - believable.
The movie is on the way, I really hope it can live up to the screenplay - it's so chilling, bloody and graphic.
I hope Hollywood will do it justice, with it's all star crew and cast.
Pray the censor will not be scissor happy.
No spoiler here, but the screenplay is a drug dealing sting with ruthless outcome - read, believe - it's happening out there, today.

THE GRANDMASTER(Blu-ray Region All)
THE GRANDMASTER(Blu-ray Region All)
Dvd ~ Chiu Wai Tony Leung

5.0 out of 5 stars in the name of love..., 10 Aug. 2013
What are you looking for here?
An all action martial arts movie, or something more?
I hope you'll find this film is more than traditional fare, because it's a very different take...extraordinary - unique.

An episode in [and profile of] the life and times of Ip Man, the real and legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun around the middle of the last century, his trials and tribulations.
It is about love and the devotion to martial arts , it's not a martial arts action movie.
The lasting impression is one of the dedication, determination and denial that the students practice for their art.
A life of discipline - and perhaps, in this case, sacrifice.

In the leading roles, Tony Leung is at his best, Ziyi Zhang is outstanding and both are totally convincing as disciples and skilled practitioners.
But this is a Wong Far Wai movie - visually stunning and thoughtful.

Wong Kar Wai is a perfectionist, exacting director, determined to get what he wants out of every frame.
Time is nothing to him, the result is all.
And as a result this film is one of the most poetic movies I have ever seen.

So take a look with an open mind, to see it for what it is and not for what you think it might be, for this is the work of one of contemporary cinema's grandmasters.

5.0 out of 5 stars hideously kinky...and an absolute delight., 15 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This author is amazing. I have read all of his works (in English translation) to date. All outstanding reads.
He investigates the darker side of human nature, in true bete noire style - his gothic stories set between the world wars of last century.
An unlikely hero character manifests himself in Eberhard Mock.
Exotic themes, twisted perverse story-lines, high drama, horrific, gross crimes.
Aristocracy, intellectuals, the misplaced, immigrants, perverts, deviants, paupers, lowlifes reign.
This particular novel starts rather slowly before hitting the accelerator, becoming a real page turner - ripping through love, hate, family ties, friendships, murder, crime, corruption, prostitution, orgies, paranormal, occult, betrayal and almost the whole gambit of sexual preferences/practises.
Mock is the anti-hero - one of the 'real' heroes of all time.
Take time out, check out this author, read his works and be transported to a time and place where anything goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars a voice of her own..., 6 Feb. 2011

This review is from: Lost Where I Belong (Audio CD)
As with most recordings destined to become classics - this has a relevance - an authenticity - an orignal sound.
Perhaps evolving from/leaning towards some of the best of early Bristol - Massive Attack, Shara Nelson, Portishead, Beth Gibbons with some early Soul II Soul.
So self-assured.
Initially laid-back understated vocals over, a seemingly minimal backing only for both gain new depth and understanding through repeated listenings.
I think this will be a 'sleeper' gaining popular appeal through word word of mouth - positive reviews...
I hope so - as it would be a loss for us not to hear more of this unique talent - a woman with an voice of her own.
For me this will be a constant constant companion - shuffled on my play-list along with the new Bonobo, early Neneh Cherry, Moby, King Britt, DJ Shadow, Zero 7, Groove Armada and Thievery Corporation.
I hope this will be one of your constant companions too.

5.0 out of 5 stars truth and soul..., 21 Dec. 2010
This review is from: Good Things (Audio CD)
Hey - can this guy carry a song.
West Coast - sweet Cali-soul - gospel, soul, R'n'B, ska, jazz, folk...a genre mix.
And this man has a social conscience - singing the fallout songs of the New Depression.
But no downward trip this - the delivery is uplifting - a spiritual high.
Thoughtful and thought provoking...' wrote Ronnie Rees for Stones Throw records and who am I to disagree?
The band of players - the Grand Scheme are really mature and keep it so tight in a minimalist kinda way.
The whole production is hot.
Some comparisons have been drawn - Gaye, Mayfield, Withers and Legend, and some have labelled it retro-soul.
But this ain't no copycat songster or backward work from this or a previous recession - this is the new soul for the new decade.

5.0 out of 5 stars be here now..., 6 April 2010
This review is from: Crazy Heart (Audio CD)
Jeff Bridges: American icon, cult hero, movie maker, photographer, national treasure - and until recently a relatively unheard, unsung singer.
I have been trying to grab hold of a copy of his 'be here soon'[B00004RI61] for an age - but all my efforts have been frustrated.
But now on the back of crazy heart's success maybe 'be here soon' will get wider distribution and become easier to obtain.
I sure hope so...
And now to crazy heart - this is a mature, masterful body of work.
The track selection flawless and T Bone Burnett and Stephen Bruton production is solid.
A genuinely fine mix of alternative country, blues, honky tonk - classic country and country classics are all here.
All the songs stand alone and work together - the originals performed by Bridges authentic, Duvall and Farrel more than holding their own with the establishment.
Ryan Bingham's 'Weary Kind' is outstanding.
This is one hellva soundtrack, one hell of an album - hear it out now.

5.0 out of 5 stars live now, life is short, time is luck..., 23 Nov. 2009
I am not a big fan of TV.
So the TV series passed me by, although I believe it has quite a following, so I approached this movie on the strength of Mr. Mann's previous work - an impeccible portfolio.
Whatever, however, Iunderstand this work has nothing to do with the TV series, other than it's title, location, the names of the two lead characters and Michael Mann's history.
Now,I believe that this movie would have fared much, much better at the box office and with its critics if it had gone out under a different banner - title.
Released, unburdened from expectation, untainted by nostalgia, free of cult following of the small screen.
However, whatever, I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed this movie, it improves with each repeat viewing and I watch over and over.
For me there is nothing that galls.
The plot, sub-plots and chapters are seamless.
The editing, screenplay, dialogue and cinematography are flawless the acting superb.
Farrell and Foxx make their roles - a kind of professionally attached emotionally detatched partnership - and Gong Li and John Ortiz are simply outstanding.
A graphic movie, dark, brooding,- with suspense and violence underscoring every scene.
Hard-boiled, brutal and breath-taking.
You can feel the rank heat and humidity.
Now I am probably going aggravate some readers - curl their toes, having them scream 'NO!NO!NO!' but for me this movie is right up there with 'Heat' and 'Collateral'.
This is a film of true quality - one of the best.
This is big screen entertainment.
The soundtrack, too, is compiled with the same deft touch, consumate skill as the movie - and is dank and dirty.
It rocks.
I am on my fourth copy - I've given three different friends on seperate occassions one each - because on listening they've asked - demanded a copy.
It's addictive - with or without the movie.
Both soundtrack and movie are an absolute delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars yesterday once more..., 26 Oct. 2009

I first heard this guy on a soundtrack to a movie.
The movie was good but the soundtrack better.
Long after the memory of the movie faded the soundtrack remained.
The tone was mellow - melancholy songs sang behind a guitar.
Lovely lyrics, beautiful vocals led by electric/acoustic guitars - folksie.
So laid back - hitting the horizontal.
Simple yet complex - always beguiling.
Then I heard this guy again tonight and it was yesterday once more.
Listen to the songs.
Hear how they are for you.
For me they're haunting.
For me they're nostaglic.
Time without consequence - one mesmerising work - by the singer/songwriter - Alexi Murdoch.
Away we go...
...the movie was good - the soundtrack better - but this album is just the best.
Away you go.

This review is from: Farm (Audio CD)
This is just raw but polished
Sandblasted - polished raw.
It's blisteringly distorted - a sonic wall.
A real dirty sound - best played loud.
It fairly rips along - white water.
White noise orchestrated - each track seamlessly melding into the following.
Soursweet vocals
Soaring guitars.
Rumbling bass.
Tumbling drums.
Luscious - harmonious and melodic.
The guys are having fun - a riot.
Energising and uplifting - makes me happy to be alive - feel good.
Blissed out and blessed.
Listen and feel real good too.
