Little bit tricky to change the settings, but works well. The first one I was sent was faulty, but a replacement was quickly sent out without any quibbles.

Augustus: A Novel
Augustus: A Novel
by John Williams
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.30

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally and intellectually satisfying, 19 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Augustus: A Novel (Paperback)
At first I just admired the skill and confidence with which Williams 'assembled' this book, but the further I got, the more I came to love it. The device of using fragments and letters as if the author was about to begin a formal autobiography of his subject works incredibly well, allowing the story to unfold from multiple viewpoints and flit between the gossipy and the formal. As a huge fan of I, Claudius, it's hard to read Williams' version of events and not see Livia's conniving hand behind the murders that perforate Augustus' reign, and this feels like a perfect companion to Graves' Claudius novels. It also shared something (beyond the ancient Roman backdrop) with Kit Hudson's Seventh Season, and it was only when I read the epilogue of Augustus (don't want to give anything away here) that I made the connection with Hudson's work. A stunning achievement that delights as much as it impresses.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor microphonics, 26 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought these as they claim to reduce the cord/scratch noise (microphonics), but they are no better than any other in ear headphones for this issue. they are not particularly comfortable either, causing pain after five minutes.

3.0 out of 5 stars not good enough (for the money), 30 Jan. 2014
I am disappointed by this product but that may just be because i expect more from Dyson... and from the price tag. Firstly, the fact that there isn't an attachment for the alternative heads seems like an obvious oversight. Secondly, the fact that you have to keep your finger on the trigger (what's wrong with an on/off switch?) makes this uncomfortable to use for more than a minute or so at a time. And finally, with a previous Dyson i was able to detach the wand with one hand, but on this model the locking mechanism is on the main machine, not the wand, so it now requires both hands to remove the wand which is irritating. it just feels like this hasn't been thought through properly.

Cagney & Lacey ... and Me: An Inside Hollywood Story OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blonde
Cagney & Lacey ... and Me: An Inside Hollywood Story OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blonde

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit rambling, but it's Barney, 7 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I get the impression that Barney wanted to write his autobiography but knew no one would buy it unless he focused on C&L. Consequently, this often feels like two books sewn together. However, if you're a big C&L fan, it's easy to skip the other chapters, but if you have any interest in the history of television then you won't want to. Rozensweig is shockingly - in the context of celeb books - frank (i imagine his lawyer got a bit hot under the collar reading this) and is a flagrant gossip. Plus, his Cagney and Lacey stories are incredible. I'm a little surprised to learn that Tyne Daly is still speaking to him!

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely good value, 26 Feb. 2012
Compared to the Vita Audio R4 this is a stunning bargain (£103 v £549) but it fails to get 5 stars for two reasons. 1) It doesn't have an off switch and in standby it has two lights on. In a dark bedroom, this might be distracting, not to mention unecological/uneconomical. However, the power cable is detachable so there's no reaching behind furniture to turn it off at the wall. Still, not ideal if you want to use it as an alarm clock. 2) I think TEAC are trying to prove how much bass they can produce from small speakers and the balance is definitely tipped towards the bass. The sound is adjusted by turning the bass and treble up and down (there's no 'pop' 'classical' 'rock' equalizer settings) and without upping the treble quite a lot, vocals can sound a bit muffled, especially at low volumes. It's definitely better louder, making this a bedroom product delivering living room sound, which will make it perfect for some people. Overall, the sound is quite technical, whereas in comparison the Vita, which I also have, produces something more soulful.

Damron Women's Traveller 2010
Damron Women's Traveller 2010

Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great, not useless, 26 Mar. 2010
Of the 600ish pages, 500 are devoted to North America. The maps are next to useless (to encourage you to shell out for their own maps which are available separately), but it's the listings which are a real let down. Nothing gets more than a few words and the book's editors are heavily reliant on receiving information from business owners, not from reviewers or travellers. You get no sense of what the hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs they list are like. You will also need a traditional guide book for the 'what to see, things to do' info. Also, hardly any website addresses are listed which doesn't help with the necessary additional research. Unless you are planning to do the US coast to coast you probably won't get much value out of this.

How To Be Smart With Your Money
How To Be Smart With Your Money

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful, 26 Aug. 2009
I bought this book after it was the ONLY financial advice book to get a 5* review in The Times and i can understand why. It doesn't patronise and made me really think about how i could use the money i've got more fruitfully. I can only assume the reviews that have given this less than five stars come from readers who were hoping for a get-rich-quick book. As Duncan says, the only way to get really rich is to start a business (and his Wake Up And Change Your Life book sets out how to do that!) or buy a winning lottery ticket. If those two options aren't likely, then this is a smart book to have on your shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but serious reservations, 10 Mar. 2009
This has excellent functionality but it also a couple of problems i wish i'd known about before i bought it. Problem 1 is the noise the machine makes, not just when it's in use, but when the EPG spontaneously downloads. I wouldn't want this in a bedroom because it could wake you up in the night. The next problem is a bit more serious: the functionality is completely reliant on the EPG working properly and in the two months i've had this machine, there have been weeks when it's just not been downloading properly and it seems that the EPG provider had glitches. Also, you have to leave it with the power on at all times (not very green) as if it misses a download it starts to malfunction (for instance, the only channel it would record was Five!). I'd be tempted to wait for the next generation of these machines in the hope that these annoyances are engineered away.

5.0 out of 5 stars and it's mac compatible!!, 22 Mar. 2004
It doesn't say in the literature anywhere, but this works with macs too. I use it with my iBook and thanks to the long lead it just sits on the floor and doesn't crowd my desk top, unlike other 4-way hubs. Very simple, very smart and very cheap.
