1.0 out of 5 stars I find it astonishing, 25 Aug. 2016
This review is from: Red Swarm (Kindle Edition)
that this book has fourteen 5 star reviews. There is the essence of a good story but it is so formulaic that it is the equivalent of painting by numbers. The characters are wooden, the language is stilted and there are numerous spelling and grammatical errors. With some radical editing it might be worth recommending.

Another excellent MonsterBusters game. So much better than Candy crush.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful translation, 8 April 2016
I am sure that in the original Swedish this is a good novel. This translation makes it unreadable. It is so americanised it needs to be translated again into English. It strips away all the Swedish character. The author deserves a better, more professional and sensitive, translator.

The original Monster Busters is great. This follows the same idea but is sufficiently different to present a new challenge.

I bought these earphones to replace a similar, earlier model, set which broke - after 5 years! The new ones are very good, as were the old ones. They particularly suit me as I like the tight fit when running and, as I am a bit deaf, the snug fit in the ear means I get a decent volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read spoiled, 21 Mar. 2015

This is a novel with an intriguing and well-paced plot. However, it does have a number of irritating flaws which detract terribly from the overall impression of the book.
Firstly, though, I nearly did not buy this book in the first place - adding such a strap line as "an edge of your seat serial killer" etc I find very off-putting as such self-aggrandisement usually leads to exactly the opposite. Fortunately, not so in this case.
As others have already given a resume of the plot I will concentrate on the issues that irritated me and detracted from what would have been a 5 star rating.
There are errors and incongruities. For example, an MP would never be addressed as Councillor as this is a completely different role. Why does the main character quote Edmund Burke and think of Dante's Inferno as there is nothing elsewhere to indicate that she has such learning? This seems very out of character.
There are a number of Americanisms eg "go see" which are out of place. But the real irritation is that everybody in the novel addresses the police as "detective" ad nauseum. The odd character addressing the police as "detective" may be permissible as some people are influenced by American cop shows. But the vast majority of people in Britain would use rank, such as inspector, or just officer as the form of address. The prime absurdity came when a uniformed constable address the DS as "detective" - he would have to have been address by his superior rank, probably as "sarge". By the end of the book this shifted, for me, from being a minor absurdity to a really major irritation. If the author cannot get such details right it really does detract from the overall impact of the novel.

Good game with varied challenges. Spoiled by constant exhortations to link to Facebook. Saying no once should be enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, 14 Nov. 2013

This was an enjoyable read. The plot was nonsensical, but extremely enjoyable. The humour was gentle - in fact it struck me as a bit like Tom Sharpe, although less bawdy. A minor criticism is that it was a little too long and some sharper (no pun intended) editing would have been an improvement. But, overall, good fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, 8 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Dominion (Kindle Edition)
I have enjoyed all of C J Sansom's previous books, from Winter in Madrid to the Shardlake series. He has a compelling, flowing writing style that is maintained in Dominion. The characters, as always, are well-drawn and believable.

The concept of this alternative history is intriguing. Although it has been covered by other authors, the slant here is somewhat different. As an account of "what might have been events" it comes across as very plausible. I would, however, have liked to know more about this imagined time but the alternative history is used more as background for a thriller/chase story. This is good enough, although it does suffer from the usual faults of this genre in that, at times, the plot relies on coincidence.

In terms of style, there is, I feel, an over-reliance on characters "remembering" what happened to get them into a situation. I realise this is used to keep the plot flowing, to avoid holding up the narrative, but it could have been used less.

In his previous novels, C J Sansom has made great efforts to achieve accuracy. In an alternative world it is, perhaps, somewhat churlish to complain about "inaccuracies" but there are occurrences of Americanisms that would have been anachronistic in the real 1950s and so, I believe, would have been in the alternate 1950s - "emergency room", "these guys", "loved ones" and "Santa Claus will be here today", rather than Father Christmas. These are minor things but they are discordant and have the effect of jolting the reader out of the narrative.

Dominion is a good read, but not C J Sansom's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very robust product, 25 Jun. 2012

I have had the Kubik Evo for just over a year now. I use the MP3 player when I am running and also take it into the sauna with me afterwards. My previous player (a different make) gave up the ghost.

Although the controls take a little getting used to, the device works perfectly well and I have been very happy with it.

A few weeks ago, by mistake, my wife put the EVO in the washing machine with my (very sweaty) running gear, as I had left it in my shorts pocket. After a full wash and spin cycle I was amazed to find that it worked perfectly - and continues to do so. I can't imagine you could get a more robust product than this. Brilliant.
