Flahavans Porridge Oats 1.5 Kg (Pack of 5)
Flahavans Porridge Oats 1.5 Kg (Pack of 5)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent oats, 25 Mar. 2017
Top quality oat, my favourite brand for porridge. Large, fine flakes that make soft, creamy porridge. No hard bits or chewy oats like some other brands. Always reliable. Cooks well in the microwave. I like my porridge well cooked so give it 2-3 mins in microwave, stir well, then a further couple of minutes until it is thick and creamy. I make it with skimmed milk and it tastes great, but also tastes good made with water due to the high quality of the oats.
For utter decadence, serve with a little double cream chopped apple and brown sugar. Yum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect. Lovely quality mats, 3 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Perfect. Lovely quality mats, the pictures are well produced and beautiful, the mats are well made out of wood, with felt backing. Different but similar picture on each mat so works well as a set. Really lovely and admired by many. Great value for a well made item.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good., 3 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Call of the Wild (Paperback)
This book started off well as a vaguely enjoyable read, but became less enjoyable as it went along, largely because gradually the writer became exposed as being not a very nice person at all. His reasons for taking himself off into the wilds seem basically to add to a 'career' of adventure travel writing rather than for any reason that has any real integrity, therefore he comes across as rather shallow. That combined with his dislike of his dog to the point that he was prepared to effectively abandon the dog to - in reality - most likely die, was enough to put me off altogether.
This is just my personal opinion however, and I know that this book will be an enjoyable read for many if you can get over the issues, above, that irked me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great backpack, very good quality, 5 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great backpack, very good quality, looks brilliant and has had loads of compliments. Would be five stars if not for a couple of minor issues - it is slightly narrow in shape so not quite as capacious as it could be, and the water pockets on the side could be deeper to accommodate a taller water bottle, but minor niggles really. Easily takes all I need for a working day - diaries and books, lunch etc. No laptop sleeve but then it's not advertised as having one. Easily remedied by the purchase of an inexpensive neoprene laptop sleeve.
Dakine seems like a fantastic backpack brand and I am sure I will buy more from them.

The Crossing Places: The Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries 1
The Crossing Places: The Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries 1
by Elly Griffiths
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but bad at the same time, 13 July 2013
I enjoyed this book but it also drove me mad, particularly the last quarter. Mainly due to the ludicrous plot. Everyone in the protagonist's life is involved in the crime or linked to it in some way...the plot is so ridiculous that it spoils what is actually good, enjoyable writing - good main characters and plenty or really good descriptive, atmospheric writing about the place.
It is a first novel however, and I may read the next one to see if Griffiths has matured at all in her plot writing. It had potential to be very good, this book, but it was squandered with the silly plot.

Landscape Painting
Landscape Painting
by Mitchell Albala
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £30.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive and useful book, 1 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Landscape Painting (Hardcover)
I've been very impressed with this book. The author really knows his stuff, and shares it in a thought provoking and accessible way. His enthusiasm and love of painting the landscape is evident. The book is very user friendly and contains lots of useful illustrations and beautiful paintings as well as being aesthetically pleasing to look at and peruse. It is packed with the technical and skills based stuff that you really do need to know if you are serious about learning about landscape painting, including composition, selecting a subject, painting 'en plein air' and in the studio (or at the dining table in my case), handling paint, considerations of colour, tone, value etc etc.

As a beginner landscape painter keen to increase my technical skills knowledge and ability this book has been invaluable. There is an accompanying blog that goes with it and the author also has a helpful Facebook page.

A top buy in my opinion for the budding landscape painter.

The Island That Dared: Journeys in Cuba
The Island That Dared: Journeys in Cuba
by Dervla Murphy

5.0 out of 5 stars A travelogue with depth and context, 8 April 2011
This is a superb book for anyone who has been to Cuba or who has an interest in Cuba. It is a travelogue but also much more than that.
Dervla Murphy makes considerable effort to understand the context of this complex and unique island, and that involves sections of historical, political and social analysis, as well as straight-forward - and very enjoyable - passages of travel writing. However it is far from a dull read. It is not a lightweight read, granted, but it reads well, and the historical and political aspects that Murphy looks at only serve to add necessary understanding towards what it is that makes Cuba so unique. Murphy does not attempt to sit on the fence in terms of her own views; this might irritate some, but for me it just adds to the charm of her writing. She is an intelligent and forthright woman without guille, and with a heart and a mind open to the everyday people that she meets and describes so well.
Very few people could do Cuba justice in print as well as Murphy has done here. I've read many of her books, and this, for me, stands up as one of her finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming classic, 7 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Snow Falling on Cedars (Paperback)
This book is wonderful. I can't add much to the well written first review on here but can only echo the sentiments - read this book, you won't regret it. Beautifully written, atmospheric and absorbing. It deserves to be much more widely read and appreciated.
