The Silk Roads: A New History of the World

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem. No, wait. ..., 16 May 2016
This book is a gem.
No, wait. More than that: this book makes miracles. It will make you passionate about history even if you always thought that history books are ''boring'' and have that ''dusty'' feel to them. Also, you will get so much into it that you'll forget you went through over 600 pages.

Now, back to the gem: if you are born in Europe (perhaps the same for Americans), you have studied incomplete history. Greeks, Romans and so on have contributed to create the world we live in today, HOWEVER it is necessary to stretch our maps a bit further and get to know the other side of the story: the influence of (Central) Asia.

In psychology there is a dynamic known as the 'transactional model' that explains how going back and forth between two agents can generate a certain outcome. The same holds true for Euroasian history and it is perfectly detailed by the author in the book. Both parties encountering and influencing each other and, after having digested the fruits of those encounters, bringing something new to the table.
Of course there is more to the book than just this. Over 2000 years skilfully condensed through the pages with connections to the present day (especially the last part of the book) that allow for a deep understanding of the world - its cultures, its traditions, its dynamics. Peter is an exceptional writer. Its clear style and balanced use of descriptions will make you travel in time, from Roma to China, through the bright and dark sides of Central Asia.

This is definitely my book of the year 2015. Until, of course, I'll read this again in 2016. So that it'll become my book of the year 2016!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, boring chapters about the 5 traits without insights, 2 Mar. 2016
Poor, boring chapters about the 5 traits without insights. He adds stories for each trait about "real" people... however a quick search online will show you that those people are clearly invented. It says everything...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not necessarily for business..., 15 Dec. 2014
Don't make the mistake to believe that this book is only helpful if you need to pitch to some investors: life's a pitch, therefore this book tells you the recipe (without sounding guru's style-obnoxious) on how to maximise your chances to get your message across (close deals) and why most people fail. It is also useful in every social interactions, whether you need to create interest in something or defend yourself from egomaniacs.

Oren says in the book that he's spent over 10000 hrs in learning and moulding a system and, as you will read, it makes so much sense.

Should you direct your pitch to your listeners' emotive brain or to their analytical's?

How to catch their attention? The push-pull technique is art!

How should you close a pitch? (the chapter on Eradicating Neediness tells you exactly what to do).

220 pages of useful "directions" that will stick to your mind!

5.0 out of 5 stars Think, Develop, Create: it's all about ideas and making them happen., 8 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Ideas Man (Paperback)
This book is a gem: a mix between autobiography, anecdotes, suggestions, tips, humor, motivation and, of course, Ideas.
Shed Simove is the Ideas Man: throughout the years he has created\developed\marketed several gadgets (and sold millions of them) and found patterns on how to make an Idea becomes reality.

What I have found really interesting is his approach to market himself\his Ideas and his unconventional, although funny and effective, style. For example, to land one of his early career job, he sent a ready-to-eat pizza at lunch time to the boss of the company he applied for, attaching his letter\CV inside the box...getting the job. Months ago I copied and twisted his Idea, sending my CV in a cereal box with customized packaging, having the same end result!

If you are looking for something very inspiring (I am not very keen on this word, but in this case it is literally!!) and\or need help on how to get Ideas and realize them, then this is the book!

5 stars totally deserved!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stoicism as an 'operating system' to deal with obstacles in life, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Embrace obstacles so that the obstacle becomes the Way.
Using brilliant anecdotes, Ryan describes a 3 steps approach to turn obstacle into advantages.

The book is smooth, easy to read yet powerful and there are a lot of concepts to absorb and take away: the kind of book that you keep ''reading'' in your mind even after you've actually finished it.
As a good companion to the book I'd suggest Ryan's blog, full of lived examples of 21st century stoicism.

5.0 out of 5 stars The development of Indian cricket and..., 13 May 2014
This book is brilliant: starting from the very beginning (how and why Indians swapped from their own old games to the one the Brits played there) it describe and explains how cricket became the national sport, its contradictions, its limits.
From the world cup to the religious tensions among India and Pakistan to the rising of the IPL, the author outlines the processes that made Indian cricket what it is today.

Honest, logic and highly entertaining!

1.0 out of 5 stars hahahahahah, one of the funniest book I've ever read., 29 April 2014
Old fashioned suggestions...he just boast about being rich, doesn't provide any actual useful info and just tries to sell you his course. The funny thing is that he tells you to buy courses about something and then sell them at 10 times more the price. Do I see a pattern here?? hahah
This book could have been useful...if we were in 1930.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the Road withouth the ludicrous Hype of ''on the road'' books, 18 April 2014

2.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating place, but the author..., 18 April 2014
Nice book: Switzerland is a very fascinating country with its traditions and contradictions.
I like the style of the author, but I don't think he really knows anything apart from the UK, the US and (of course) Switzerland: he finds strange that in Switzerland people don't use greeting cards as much as they do in English speaking countries...the fact is that English speaking countries are the only ones that massively use cards (so it is not just Switzerland, but the rest of the world as well).
He also finds strange the fact that, in Switzerland, Italian dressing for salads is made up by oil, vinegar and extras...basically the same way salad dressings are in Italy...
There are a few more examples in the book, together with some questionably 'humurous' remarks about other countries, that are a bit annoying (it seems as if anything that isn't British or American is weird). It's a shame because all these little things undermine the potential of the book.

Creating Customer Evangelists: How Loyal Customers Become a Volunteer Sales Force
by Ben McConnell
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, 21 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is underrated and I feel that the whole concept of 'customer evangelism' isn't regarded as it should be.
People think that social media marketing nowadays is everything, but, as research showed, only 7% of word of mouth happens online. If you want to cover the remaining 93% read this book and follow its steps.
