5.0 out of 5 stars Magnifico !, 10 Jun. 2017
This review is from: Welcome (Audio CD)
Along with the live album Lotus this is the best Santana album of them all, and one of the best ever of the Seventies full stop. I still play the full cd half a dozen times a year having bought the original vinyl in 1973. As to the reviewer suggesting you skip "When I look into your eyes" well imo don't. Like every other track it is a gem, esp "Flame /sky " whilst the title (& final) piano/guitar track is hauntingly beautiful.

Like another reviewer here I was (at 17) lucky to be at the Manchester Uni gig in February 1971 from where most of the tracks come from. Two years later I saw The New Santana Band at the Hardrock Cafe in the same city just before they went onto Japan to perform & record 'Lotus'

The fact that 40+ yrs later these are imo the best two live jazz- rock albums ever made says it all. Colosseum classic line up, magnificent musicianship from all 5, frenetically propelled by the charismatic drummer/bandleader that was the great Jon Hiseman. Can even remember Chris Farlowe's brown suede fringed jacket he performed in throughout ! Play it loud, in the car, next time on the M1

5.0 out of 5 stars Crackin' stuff, 27 Aug. 2016
Agree very much with the above, my lads got me this for fathers day. They know I love the 70s & this is a throwback to not only Little Feat but The Average White Band,Stretch, Kokomo & Moon etc. With modern twists on instrumentation throughout. Superb musicianship & damn fine catchy tunes ! Buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A great reason why you should never meet your heroes, 4 Feb. 2016
Have lots of classy Clapton cds....am now in a dilemma as to whether I will ever play them again, his book a great reason why you should never meet your heroes (or read their autobiographical works). As other low graders articulate here what is annoying is it's boastfulness and a a candid admission that the man himself treats an awful lot of people abysmally blaming much on his confusion re parentage. I would have some sympathy for his excesses perhaps if he didn't go on so much about his houses, women & ferraris .At least fellow top axeman & probably nicer guy full stop Jeff Beck works on his own hotrods ; just buying the things Eric a car nut makes you not.

The book is the diametric opposite of another rock & roller Joe Jackson who in 'A Cure for Gravity' is so much more eloquent,
self effacing & witty. Like EC he too had a tough confusing upbringing. But would be a much more interesting guy to have a pint with in my opinion .

Now what do I do about those cds ? 'Bell Bottom Blues' am not sure will rate as highly as did before I had misfortune to pick
this book up at my local library (but at least have not financially contributed to the EC retirement fund in a 'literary' sense.....)

5.0 out of 5 stars No Sky tv or daft/ uneccessary away kits here !, 19 Jan. 2016
Fabulous book from the proprietors of the brilliant monthly magazine 'When Saturday Comes' which is the the great monthly read for us folk who love the game but loathe the Premiership and the ridiculous antics of overpaid vacuous oafs that seem to increase in number every season.

Actually although it has loads of vintage pics the text detail is phenomenal have been reading it for 4 weeks & still only a third of the way
through. The mix of old articles when players were actually contributing to own communities &ran sports shops or market gardens after training are great.( e.g.Chelsea's star player Roy Bentley in the late 1950's had a summer job in a London stationers shop every year to supplement earnings and give him a post retirement football skill) . Complemented by modern editing/ analysis of the post WW2 period to
the 1980s the book works superbly

Just the tonic needed for next time some boneheaded suited Sky pundit (who has aided the Murdoch ruination of the peoples game ) tells
all and sundry "It's a Premiership record " as if football didn't exist before 1992...........

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a cheap book for good reason; the text and photographs especially are superb, 7 Jan. 2016
Not a cheap book for good reason; the text and photographs especially are superb. It 's is written in a non boastful way too . Charlie comes over as a thoroughly decent guy acknowledging the impact of the Fairfax crew he meets in the 1970's and their influence on the development of mountain biking , repack runs & the hills of Marin County . Visually there are hairy characters throughout who turned out to be shrewd business brains that would put the ghastly 'characters' on the Apprentice television show in the UK to shame

One more point ; The Joe breeze built 'Breezer No 6 ' in 1978 made for Wende Cragg at the start of Chapter 8 (I understand she still uses it) would not eventually look out of place in the most resplendent of Tate like art galleries. It is magnificent, even at 35lbs !

As a keen off -road cyclist myself its nice to be able to read about one of the truly great inventions of the late 20th century; cheers Charlie .

Excellent analysis in a topical & witty mode of ( the very crowded) Dutch society and it's historical links from seafaring days of empire to modern immigration tensions. Compares the reality of liberal " anything go's " imagery and the reality of many rules & regulations that are expected to be obeyed however.

Tells us a great deal about a nation who work fewer hours than us Brits, pay more income tax but appear much more optimistic & cheerful. Usefully a section on sport too ; although like other writers he still cannot tell us how on earth Holland managed to lose that 1974 World Cup final ! ( n.b. I watched it at the time & still can't explain either )

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb, 23 July 2015
Don't need to repeat what others have said....the whole package is wonderful The bonus dvd is so worth watching too, Bill Nelson still plays that guitar like he did Crying to the Sky in '76 with his his Hendrix tribute. My younger son bought me this as an extra to go with 'Live in the Air Age' which in itself is a solid live album. But this 3 cd/dvd set , and Bill's superb six piece band (inc a brilliant bassist & a debutant drummer making an outstanding debut) alongside modern recording technology is a different beast altogether.

Like his heyday of late 70's Yorkshire stately pads and Panther sports cars, this is pure class and a real tribute to a genuine player so, so underrated by the music business. But we know better ..

Buy it now !

Just got this from my local library a couple of days ago. Delighted Simon Brett has scribed a further adventure regarding our 'Twenties Twosome'. And ecstatic when I got to chapter 5. Why? The return of ever intolerant Corky Froggatt - the one man killing machine . Need I say more?

Halfway through and the sends ups/ ironies of 'our betters' as sharp as ever; as indeed is the contrast between the stunningly brainy (and stunning generally ) Twinks and her hopelessly dim brother Blotto fending off Russian undesirables in spy ridden 1920s Berlin.

Blimey and me a socialist too

Marvellous- buy from a local supplier or borrow from a reading institution not likely to last under our present Government as I have done

5.0 out of 5 stars blistering debut album, 30 May 2015
Fabulous debut album, all eleven songs beautifully crafted, ethereal, dreamy & rhythmic . 'The Lanterns' - I acknowledge my discovery of them to the great Gideon coe on R6- may find it difficult to replicate this & will be unlikely to make a better album. Lets hope peaking so soon doesn't prove their undoing. Highlights- in an album of no dud tracks mind- include the epic 'Tricks', followed by 'Sleepyhead' with its wonderful multiple violin based backing. Buy or order from your local record store preferably, as I did ; and then fully appreciate this addition to the not always trumpeted musical heritage of the North East & Tyneside
