3.0 out of 5 stars I could return this otherwise excellent scarf because of misleading labelling, 10 Dec. 2014

I could return this otherwise excellent scarf because of misleading labelling. It is NOT extra large as alleged. It is inf act a few inches shorter than my normal scarf that I measured it against. I don't know why the company would jeopardize the sale of its products by this unnecessaryily misleading label.

Ian Dallas (Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Murabit) is a brilliant political philosopher as well as being a master of a Sufi tariqa. His writings on the underlying structures that influence and direct apparent change in the world are based on tremendous insights and flashes of real inspiration. I m not one of his school, and I often disagree with him, but there is no doubting that he is an inspired thinker and ranks amongst the leading lights of political philosophy of the past hundred years. It is a real pity that his writings have not reached a wider audience or that he has not had the opportunity to develop his thought in a systematic manner to make it more accessible.

Garden City Utopia: A Critical Biography of Ebenezer Howard

4.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Utopian, 2 Mar. 2013

This is the only biography of Ebenezer Howard that rises to the significance of this pioneering figure in town planning and the planning of new cities. Howard's effect on the built up landscape and the provision of decent, affordable housing for the less advantaged has influenced societies around the world. A hundred years later his efforts to re-imagine the world in which we believe is achieving renewed relevance as we face the catastrophic growth of mega cities and the destruction of our urban living spaces. This is an excellent biography of this extra-ordinary person and visionary.

4.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story-well told, 30 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this biography very well researched and especially interesting as it devotes a great deal of space to Tolstoy's writings on religion, spirituality and pacifism. I have read other biographies of this great soul- Ernest Simmons's for example- but they focussed nearly exclusively on Tolstoy's literary output. The fact that the last third of Tolstoy's life was devoted mainly to living out his own philosophy of life cannot be dismissed as an uninteresting aberration and faintly embarrassing deviation by a literary giant. Bartlett has met this challenge directly, and treats Tolstoy's philosophy with the respect and seriousness it deserves. With that said, my only point of criticism with the biography is the rather turgid prose, which does not quite match up to the grandeur of the subject and his prodigious life and remarkable achievements- both literary and in inventing a new way of life that should have special resonance for us in these times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A shattering memoir of a horrific episode in Man's cruelty to Man., 24 Dec. 2012

This book stands alongside John Hersey's "Hiroshima". It is written by an eye witness who happened to be the physician in charge of the Hiroshima hospital to which survivors of the atomic bomb streamed. The harrowing tales are extraordinary in their pathos and power, all the more so because they are written in the matter-of-fact style of a scientist. It is unbelievable that these weapons still exist and that nations who hoard them, boast about them, or are busy making them can claim any ethical sanction for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Braudel on Braudel, 24 Dec. 2012

This review is from: On History (Paperback)
If you believe that the clamour and froth of politics and daily events only mask the true workings of history, then this book would give you a good basis to the thinking behind the French Annales School of history. Braudel is one of the foremost exponents of this school. Here he talks about the theory that underpinned his classic works on the Mediterranean and on the development of capitalism.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boring, 24 Dec. 2012

Way below the book on the 1960 elections. A tired product of a tired mind.. Nevertheless, interesting as commentary on the late Senator McGovern.
