1.0 out of 5 stars I bought this in January and it had pretty much had it by May, 7 July 2015

I bought this in January and it had pretty much had it by May. It started out quite well but quickly started degenerating in to a thin lumpy mass inside a 'v' shaped cover. Currently scouring the internet for one that lasts a little longer. This was a waste of money.

Really enjoyed this book - pure fiction ... and definitely a romance, but well written and thoroughly entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-crafted pleasure to read., 13 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well crafted and intelligently written, this was a real pleasure to read. I have to warn you that once picked up - it's difficult to put down again and although it's not an epic length - it's perhaps better to read at the weekend (I had to get up for work).
I read quite a lot of historical novels and, inevitably, the big disappointment with them is that you know the ending right from the start; and I tend to avoid fantasy novels because - well, I think that maybe the scientist bit of me just finds them annoying and contrived, but I was very impressed with the author's weaving together of old legends with scrupulously researched historical fact.
All-in-all - a 'must' for Ricardians.

Absolutely appalling. Written with a complete lack of subtlety, unbelievable dialogue and clichéd characters. Life's too short to waste your time on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorughly good read ..., 21 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Honour (Kindle Edition)
I have to say that, whilst I quite enjoyed Matthew Lewis' last book - 'Loyalty', there was also an awful lot about it that irritated me, this one however, seemed to be in a different league.
The writing was much slicker, the dialogue less forced, the characters much more vividly drawn - altogether a much better read. Actually, I was a bit disappointed when I'd finished it - in the way you often are when you've come to the end of a book you've enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sheets, 2 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not much more to say really - they feel beautiful, look great and wash well. Like all Egyptian cotton, they need ironing really but the difference in comfort between them and the cheaper polycottons is worth it, I think. The 12" deep sheets fitted over my quite deep mattress, but once I had added the mattress topper, the 16" deep fitted better - I shall definitely buying more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but ..., 30 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read so many modern fictionalised accounts of this period it was refreshing to read an older take on the story, Or, at least, it was at first.

The style is (not surprisingly) very dated, and sentences were very long indeed, Shelley never uses one word where an entire paragraph can be used instead. I think the average sentence length nowadays is something like 15 words, whereas in Shelley's time it was more like 29, and this can be a challenge.

She sticks largely to the facts (though invents characters to suit her storyline that are a bit one-dimensional), but embellishes them very fancifully, and leaves the reader in no doubt whatsoever where her sympathies lay - every Yorkist being a paragon of virtue and Henry Tudor being the devil incarnate.

All-in-all - a passable, though not great, Gothic novel that's a bit too long and over-laden with purple prose.

Really enjoyed reading this well-written and interesting tale, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in Richard III.
