A Drop of the Hard Stuff (Matthew Scudder Mysteries Series Book 17)
A Drop of the Hard Stuff (Matthew Scudder Mysteries Series Book 17)
Price: £4.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Scudder number 17, 16 July 2016

This book is disappointing as I really like the Scudder books but this one may herald the end of the line... Too much of the 12 steps stuff and not enough plot line. Low level philosophy and not enough detectiveing ( I know it's not a word). I can't really recommend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new story with an old feel, 6 Jan. 2015

This is a lovely vignette of the older style horror tale - it's a short short story that you might have found in a magazine format in the dim past that combines a feeling of fatality and familiarity with the run down seaside resort the setting for Mr Fowler's deft prose. I enjoyed it and wold have been happy had it been longer, perhaps with the development of some of the other doomed characters.

The cyber wizardry failed after my first plot twist choice and then I got to read all the sections - rather disjointed experience but the concept was laudable. I preferred the chapters by Fowler.

The Chimera Vector: The Fifth Column 1
The Chimera Vector: The Fifth Column 1
Price: £2.84

4.0 out of 5 stars hard fast read!, 19 Nov. 2014
This is an action adventure which I could easily see as a Bourne Identity/Mission Impossible style film, probably starring Tom Cruise and Milla Jojovich or Kate Beckinsale. It's non stop action from start to finish and consequently easy to read and not so easy to stop reading. I kept wanting to know how the current s*** storm (excuse my language please) would pan out. The book is a good quality example of its type. There is the odd passage of narrative where the use of 'call signs' are excessive but it is no problem to skip a sentence or two as no important information is missed. I get the impression that Nathan has done a lot of research and this military style language is no doubt authentic. Some of the core concepts are fanciful but if you can watch the helicopter rushing towards the train in the eurotunnel in the Mission Impossible film without switching it off in disgust then you'll be fine with this book. I enjoyed it and may well look up the sequel.

Price: £3.99

3.0 out of 5 stars it's ok but not on a par with the earlier works., 31 Aug. 2014

Readable but not his best story by some way. Needs more character development and not so much eulogising over railways. Thin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Free books, 22 Jun. 2014

It's young adult mutant fantasy. The writing style is to the point and the action is frequent. It's a fast read but don't expect thoughtful insights into the future of mankind.
