5.0 out of 5 stars only 2/3rds through but enjoying every word, 3 July 2013

This is a classy read, full of sailing tales and encounters with hunter-gatherers in Polynesia. Great stuff and soundly written.

5.0 out of 5 stars wildtrack - best in fleet, 10 April 2013
This review is from: Wildtrack (Kindle Edition)
Wildtrack is the best of Bernard Cornwell's sailing novels, I would say. This one has a strong sense of style and mood. I was hooked by the first steps of our damaged hero on page one as he limped out of hospital. I wrote my own first novel, Waypoint (a sailing thriller on a different theme), in reaction to it.
It is by the far the most absorbing of the sailing stories. I think I read that he wasn't planning any more sea-based thrillers because he enjoys Sharpe and historical fiction so much. A shame. I would love another set of books like this one. Come on Bernard!

Iumentum
Iumentum
by J. D. G. Leaver
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, good pace, and gorey, 6 April 2013
This review is from: Iumentum (Paperback)
Iumentum starts in a future in which the human race has destroyed the planet and protected itself in shelters run by superhuman engineers. Michael, one of these extraordinary engineers, discovers that the shelter which has housed them for generations may no longer be the safe haven they had relied upon for so long. He sets out to protect his wife and unborn child.
So starts a pretty entertaining and gripping account of their adventures.
In the second phase of the book, things move on to Michael's son, but I'll leave that for you to discover.
I really enjoyed the style, pace and imaginative details that Leaver put in this novel, there is, though, some pretty gorey description, so be aware, if you like it dark and well-written, you've come to the right place, if you are squeamish, cover your eyes.
Marks out of 10, 8.5.
Looking forward to his next book out later this year or early 2014??
