5.0 out of 5 stars practical and easy to use, 3 Feb. 2014

I'm a fairly frequent visitor to the subcontinent and wished I'd had this earlier. In fact it's a new and updated edition with recent amendments to some aspects of classification but unless you're a bird nerd that's unlikely to be important. It's not much bigger than the regional guides (e.g. Birds of North India) in the same series and although too big to fit in a pocket it's worth having in your rucksack and wouldn't add much to the weight of your camera and binoculars if you're doing some serious birding. Good distribution maps. Also great value for money, but you can get it in India at some tourist stop offs where it would be marginally cheaper - but you wouldn't want to risk being without a good guide like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars great first novel, 15 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First - declaration of interest - I know Debz slightly which is what prompted me to buy the book.
But that said, no regrets. A great story, and as with so many novels set amongst real times/places/people I couldn't help googling things about the Kennedy assassination and various conspiracy theories. I found Lydia, the psychic, a really engaging figure (unlike the 2-star reviewer) and her own uncertainties about her powers, her cats and the almost audible southern drawl gave her realism. Like any good story there were plots, subplots and much of the whodunit. It moved quickly and a real page turner.
If there are weaknesses, I think it could have done with tighter editing particularly some of the dialogue that didn't move the plot forward. It got a bit lost in the middle (as so many books do) and the ending could have been stronger - though I don't know what I would have expected!

I look forward to her next book

By page 2 of this book you're well into steamy sex; no literary foreplay here other than a fascinating brief introduction about how the book came to be written for a "collector". I've not read 50 Shades of Grey and wonder what the fuss is about but I did manage the first 40 pages of a copy left lying around and frankly not a lot happened. You can't say that for Anais Nin's romp through all manner of sexual adventures reduced into action packed vignettes of straight, gay, bi-, oral, anal, group and more. I almost got the feeling that she had a tick list of what hadn't been included - "oh yes, necrophilia - haven't done that yet, lets get a voluptuous fresh corpse dragged out of the harbour". There is a story thread of sorts running through the book. The time setting is in what sounds like the early 1900s with many layers of petticoats requiring removal and visits to whorehouses in Paris where syphilis and pregnancy are occupational hazards. But the question is not "what happens next?" but "how?" and "with whom?".

In today's culture more serious questions arise such as the difference, if any, between erotica and pornography, issues of misogyny, exploitation and child abuse - when a sexual romp between a man and his two hitherto estranged teenage daughters - makes one wonder how acceptable this genre is today.

3.0 out of 5 stars literary "Hello" magazine, 14 Oct. 2012

This review is from: One on One (Paperback)
It was on the radio that I first heard the opening story of John Scott-Ellis(of whom I'd never heard) and his non fatal collision with Adolf Hitler in 1931 and I was intrigued. The rest of the book, as it's title suggests is a daisy chain succession of one on one encounters each summarized in a tidy, if somewhat anal, 1001 words. However, the 11 "Book of the Year" accolades and the "laugh out loud" tribute had me expecting better things. A collection of literary figures, royalty, film stars and musicians from the last 100 years or so who bump into one another in often predictable circumstances when the great and the good assemble became somewhat repetitive. It began to read a bit like Hello magazine though with some bizarre anecdotes (did you know Cubby Broccoli's grandfather did bring broccoli from Italy to the USA and successfully grew it?)and sexual titillation (Janis Joplin's "giving me head on an unmade bed" to Leonard Cohen in the Chelsea Hotel. I had a lot of "Well, I never knew that" moments - fascinating, but not literature. Great to have in the toilet and you can read one story in the time it takes to have a decent poo and at this time of the year it would make a good stocking filler. (The book, not the poo).

I found this surprisingly good. Delivery etc prompt and efficient. I had wanted a hard reed but could only find medium hard online - other reeds I've had have been too soft and make me sound like a duck, this is harder than I anticipated with a surprisingly good tone for my level of playing!

Excellent service -It hadn't occurred to me that I might be able to get oboe reeds via Amazon. Next day delivery, the Reed itself is ideal - as an occasional player I didn't want one that was too hard and therefore tiring, or too soft and "flabby". I also ordered a medium hard reed I havent' tried yet - it was marked "H" so I wondered if it was in fact hard; a quick efficient email exchange from Britannia confirmed I had the right reed. Would certainly order oboe reeds from Britannia via Amazon again.

The main problem is that it emits an eerie luminescent green glow that you can't turn off; it's effectively sleeping with the light on so we don't use it on "timer". When the water comes to boil it sounds a bit like a cross between the Tardis taking off and Vesuvius erupting, which is a bit disconcerting when all you want is a quiet morning cuppa. We've used it a couple of time in 4 months - easier just to get up and put the kettle on like we always do! Disappointing!

It's nothing special and you probably could get something as good just as easily at the local supermarket. I thought it might be something more "upmarket" but it isn't. However, both mills work well and 4 months after using them haven't "worn out" which is a problem I have had with other models.
