5.0 out of 5 stars Ticks all the thriller boxes, 2 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Dirty Wars (Paperback)
What do we look for in a thriller? Story, action, incident, character, atmosphere, setting, sex - the latter an optional extra but, like ballistics detail, increasingly in demand. Well, this has it all plus a wry intelligence and the sense that the writer knows whereof he writes. Not that he is a murderer, torturer, blackmailer or sexual obsessive, but he clearly knows as much about the historical black holes of Argentina as about what lies beneath the surface of contemporary Switzerland's financial bureaucracy. Add an edgy touch of espionage and authoritative evocations of dark deeds in luxury settings and you have everything you look for in the thriller genre - plus some. Give it a go but be warned - it's not for the faint-hearted.

Alan Judd, author of Legacy and Uncommon Enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive account, 31 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the definitive account of how the war cemeteries of the First World War came into being and of how they have reflected and affected attitudes ever since. No history of that war is complete without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Promising start., 29 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Sonnets (Kindle Edition)
Clearly a poet of some promise whose evocation of the agony and ecstasy of love is enlivened by paradox and irony. Perhaps a little exuberant in places with a too obvious delight in conceits but overall someone whose future work we can look forward to with a degree of confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great novel., 29 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not only a convincing evocation of post-war middle-class American suburban life but a wry and perceptive dissection of the hopelessness and emptiness of those who have (nearly) everything, apart from the wisdom to see that the self-centred pursuit of personal happiness is an illusion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting crime-and-courtroom drama., 29 Dec. 2012

A good story with a good twist and credible characters. Probably not his best, although I haven't read his others.

The Mortal Sickness: The Lydmouth Crime Series Book 2 (A Lydmouth Mystery)
by Andrew Taylor
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Good on character, plot and atmosphere., 29 Dec. 2012

Taylor is excellent on period and place, which are as important in crime writing as plot and character. But he's excellent on those, too. A very good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the great biographies., 29 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ford Madox Ford (Paperback)
This is very much a novelist's biography, written as is it were from the inside. It is not the most scholarly or comprehensive - see Max Saunders's two-volume biography for that - but it probably gives you a better feel for Ford than any other biography. But then I would say that, since I wrote it.
