Be Wary of This Study!, 9 July 2012
Okay, actually holding a degree in classics and having read and researched this topic more than any other topic in the multiverse, let me make three purely factual points with which no one could reasonably take issue:
1. This book has been almost universally rejected by scholars well-versed in the history of sexuality--and not just as incorrect but as making frequently absurd claims.
2. The standard references on ancient Greek sexuality remain the studies by Kenneth Dover, David Halperin, and John Winkler.
3. The standard reference on ancient Roman sexuality remains the one by Craig Williams.
That's just the way it is, for those interested. As for ancient female same-sex sexuality, the best reference would be the one by Sandra Boehringer, in French. Sorry, but ancient female same-sex sexuality just isn't as well established yet as the male variety.
