Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars transportation to australia, 1 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the third and final booklet on the transportation of criminals to Australia from 1788- 1868 by this author the other 2 are reviewed on Amazon.com but this 3rd one is on Amazon.co.uk as Amazon .com did not recognised its existance .
The book deals with Port Arthur and how it developed due to enforced labour inflicted on the prisoners but it eventually became a flourishing community.
Coal and timber were vital to the colony as were transport and signaling services.
Very well written and illustrated.
A first class series of booklets.

5.0 out of 5 stars pictorial china, 15 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Symbols of China (Hardcover)
This is without doubt the best pictorial book on China that I have ever come across. It is outstanding basically because of the first class pictures and the spread of subjects covered.
following an introduction there is a timeline from c60th centuary B.C. to the present. The author then deals with 9 subjects eg. cultural icons, natural worlds, architectural heritage, ceremonies and festivals, daily life, arts and crafts, legends, famous figures and finally performing arts.
If you only buy one book on China this is the one you must get.
A 10 star book.

Catalogue of Environmental Health Leaflets for Scotland
Catalogue of Environmental Health Leaflets for Scotland
by G.I. Forbes
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars environmental health, 1 July 2015
In 1993 all Regional and District Councils in Scotland were producing their own environmental health leaflets this led to considerable overlap with wasted time and money.
In an attempt to rationalise the matter councils were asked to submit to The Environmental Health (Scotland) Unit copies of their leaflets and this resulted in an avalanche.
These notes were listed by councils and subjects and the duplication was vast.
As a result councils can now use each others material making life much easier.

A Biographical Sketch-book of Early Hong Kong (Echoes) (Echoes: Classics of Hong Kong Culture and History)
A Biographical Sketch-book of Early Hong Kong (Echoes) (Echoes: Classics of Hong Kong Culture and History)
by G.b. Endacot
Edition: Paperback
Price: £22.95

5.0 out of 5 stars old hong kong, 24 Mar. 2015
The essays in this book were first published in 1962 but now appear in the Echoes series that deal with the history and life in old Hong Kong.
The book is in 3 parts a) notes on 6 governors from 1841-1865 b) 11 senior government officials during the same period and c) persons of particular interest.
To say that some odd people turned up in Hong Kong is an under statement. They included pirates, criminals, drunks and the corrupt but there were honest people who did their best under difficult circumstances.
The author has written several other books on Hong Kong that are well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars bird flight, 24 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Earthflight (Hardcover)
This book published in 2011 was produced to accompany the BBC television series of the same name.
The author with 25 years experience of photographing birds lists the advantages that have developed over the years- a) cameras b)parascenders,c)imprinting,d) use of microlights e) and birdcams.
The photos which cover the 5 continents illustrate what the birds see and are truly magnificent like nothing you have seen before.
There is an interesting chapter entitled "The Making Of" that explains how the pictures and films were made.
A 10 star book..

Beautiful Chickens: Portraits of Champion Breeds
Beautiful Chickens: Portraits of Champion Breeds
by Christie Aschwanden
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars chick chicks, 23 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is certainly the book for lovers of exotic chickens. Over 40 species are written about in detail giving general description, features, use, related breeds, shows and keeping and caring.
However it is the illustrations which are important for the book but an excellent opportunity was lost as a good number of the studio portraits of the chickens have a far to dark background and destroy the integrity and detail of the images.

1.0 out of 5 stars delusions of grandeur., 21 Mar. 2015
Just the deluded ramblings of a fantasist whose only interest is self glorification never mind the people of Scotland who have spoken.
Is the author so illiterate that he has difficulty in understanding the word NO.
There is no doubt his dream will never be fulfilled and he can only look forward to nightmares as the Scottish people are not stupid and will never give him a second chance.
Do not waste your money on this nonsense.

Scotland's Radical Exports: The Scots Abroad - How They Shaped Politics and Trade Unions
Scotland's Radical Exports: The Scots Abroad - How They Shaped Politics and Trade Unions
by Pat Kelly
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.95

5.0 out of 5 stars trade unions, 15 Mar. 2015
Most Of us have heard of the economist Adam Smith and industrialist Andrew Carnegie who both spread Scotlands influence throughout the world in thier own spheres of influence but very few have heard of the people recorded in this book.
In 13 chapters the author (an ex president of the STUC) outlines the influence of men and women from Scotland on trade union movements in America,Canada,Australia and New Zealand. This happened because there were fertile fields in these countries where trade unions and workers rights were not as well developed as in Scotland. The author concedes that the activities of the 19th and 20th centuries are no longer required.
A first class book.

The Polish Underground 1939-1947 (Campaign Chronicles)
The Polish Underground 1939-1947 (Campaign Chronicles)
by David G. Williamson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars poland, 12 Mar. 2015
This is an excellent account of the Polish underground that formed in 1939 with the invasion by the Nazis and continued until 1947 when the country became communist.
The often tragic story encompasses extreme bravery and cowardice. The methods used by the underground included propaganda, spying, assassinations, disruption, sabotage and guerilla warfare.
There is a first class recount of the Home Army and its eventual failure of the defence of Warsaw in 1944.
Good appendices include a chronology,a biography, a glossary and orders of battle. There are also remarkable pictures.
An outstanding book.
