Wild About Flying: The Dreamers, Doers and Daredevils by Bruce Harris (2003-10-04)
Wild About Flying: The Dreamers, Doers and Daredevils by Bruce Harris (2003-10-04)
by Bruce Harris
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional biographical history of flight., 24 July 2016
Very much a labour of love. One day when printed books disappear, this could be held up as an example of the epitome of their era. This has astonishing scope and gorgeous production values. Aviators, including navigators, adventurers and test pilots are given chapters alongside designers and other visionaries throughout the age of flight from the first string bags to the predator. There are many strong aspects to the approach, not least the coverage of figures from different nations and women as well as men (though nothing on Russia or Japan which suggests a bias of the Australian authors) . Fine paintings and illustrations outnumber the photographs; it's overwhelming to look at apart from the fine historical record. It's already sent me off on several trails to look up people I'd never heard of. There are a few techincal errors such as confusing ram-jets with pulse jets but it's so strong in other areas that I still gave it five stars.

I read this along with Faust' s other book on the Last Panther. Stunning reads. Rather than registering with me as an indictment of war, in the context of current events it suggested that war is inevitable and needs to be prepared for if you want your state to survive.

Swimming in the Volcano
Swimming in the Volcano
by Bob Shacochis
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine blend of political and emotional intrigue., 28 Mar. 2016
I'm re-reading this after twenty years years or so. It's better than I remember: wonderfully inventive and rich prose and an elaborate well structured plot. Right up there with the best of Greene and Le Carre, but with more humanity.

Nice pieces on the technology and drivers but the race reports are a bit dull. If you can get hold of it, buy the Ted Simon book of the same season. That is one of the best books about motor racing ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine chaos, 28 Mar. 2016

The purest essence of live rock that I've ever heard. A fine balance of structure and chaos with the most accurate recording of live guitar. It's just great. Can't stop playing it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Strange diversions from the subject in hand., 28 Mar. 2016
The writers here seem questionable fans of the bands they went to see, let alone live music, and their stories generally veer off into personal memories of the type that no one will be interested in: How someone nearly got arrested, fell out with a friend, lucked into a ticket for a band they didn't like etc. There's rarely much about the concert itself and little of the frisson that the anticipation of a gig can generate or the sense of jubilation and bonhomie that comes from an unexpectedly good concert. Very disappointing. Possibly a better approach would be a prose/poetry one. My copy is now in the bin.

On Roads: A Hidden History
On Roads: A Hidden History
by Joe Moran
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so much on roads at all., 20 Sept. 2015
In no way does this live up to it' s title. The grandiose title suggests a broad scope. There are so many aspects that could have been covered: Historical, cultural, technological, topographical, yet the scope ends up being largely focused on a social history of motorways in the late twentieth century. Actually quite political and unnecessarily so. In the end quite a feeble effort.

2.0 out of 5 stars The dull tarnished side of the road racing coin., 30 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Road [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
A real downer of a film. Maudlin and over arty without the fizz of Closer to the Edge. Fine riders they may be but the film tells us nothing about the real characters off the bike. Basically they carry on riding until they kill themselves. Dull, and pretty much like any other addiction. Closer is the shiny brilliant side of the same coin.

5.0 out of 5 stars In depth discussion of information theory without the Maths., 6 Nov. 2014

Takes you deeper than others on the same subject such as James Gleick's The Information. The chapter on Dreams seems pointless though. Apparently not revised in the second edition, which is a shame.
