4.0 out of 5 stars A live anthology box set to compliment Storytellers and cheap at under £20, 17 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It not really so easy to review a box set on first listen, but here goes anyway.Any fan will already know most of the songs and Rod is still widely rated as one of the best live acts on the scene, all the hits are here. With 58 songs covering Rod's live rock era before he took a decade break to record the American song book albums and a few slightly iffy covers albums.
Of the Highlight tracks here include "Forever Young" "Sailing" "Every Picture tells a story" "Stay with me" twice(overkill really but recorded 16 years apart). Cover versions of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" which is OK if not a patch on the original. There is a great version of "Baby please don't go" possibly made more Famous by Van Morrison in Them. Some songs work better than others but there is a lot of good stuff here for any fan.

Overall is a bargain at under £20 for 58 songs, get it to go with your other boxsets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Weird beyond weird, 20 Nov. 2012

If you are looking for later era Pink Floyd or Roger Water's look elsewhere because this is very experimental and more akin to Syd Barrett than Roger Waters,Ths album has regular instruments and body noises(whispers to farts) included which is something you do not get everyday.

Amusing in parts annoying in others this album is an oddity that you will likely play once or twice and maybe let mates hear to show Roger Waters is not always very serious. It has a charm about it that I can not explain, I suggest if its cheap buy it if you like Pink Floyd, but don't spend too much and be ready for something a bit mad.

If you want Roger's solo stuff go for the box set of albums that will cover all you really need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bargain at the current price of around £10, 29 Jun. 2012
This review is from: 25 Years - The Chain (Audio CD)
Not much can be said about the music here thats not already been said,All the best songs from the band up until 1992 are pretty much here and sound quality is very good. Plus this is by far the best of the "Best of's" for Fleetwood Mac a band who seem to have had a few best ofs that just really miss the mark

This set is not perfect either but it comes closer than any of the others do. The short comings for me is I would rather they revamped it and put songs into more of a release order and added on some tracks from "Say You Will" thus giving a true career restrospective album, at the moment this is nearly not but not nearly enough really. A few tweets would make it a in to a really great collection. But even now its well worth buying

I have owned the 2 disc version of this since 1992 but the 4 disc version was too costly for me when it first came out, By contrast now its almost bargain basement price and has to be regarded as great value for money.

Grab this re-release and hope FM get the boxset they truly deserve soon a full career spanning one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruce's Statement on the 2012 world.( Buy the deluxe if you can), 5 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wrecking Ball (Deluxe) (Audio CD)
Firstly I am a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen and collect everything he does and with the exception of one or 2 albums he always delivers the goods. I feel this is the best album he has done with the E Street band since "The Rising" and his best work since "The Seeger sessions". This is probably partly as it seems Bruce is at his best when he has a theme to get him angry, He even said it himself that people don't like it when he writes happy songs.

Its hard to grab a standout track from it but my favourite 3 are "Jack of All Trades", Shackled and Drawn and "This Depression"(this seems to be a deeply personal song for Bruce and you can feel him. "Wrecking Ball" is great too but not new for me, but at least great to have it as a studio version. I am assuming that "American Land" is on the album as fits the theme and although was available on deluxe version of "Seeger Sessions" it suits "Wrecking Ball" too.

Go get the deluxe version of this guys and enjoy THE BOSS at his angriest and finest.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT a Rat Pack collection but still some good old Xmas songs, 20 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first thing as a word of warning if you are expecting a collection of Rat pack Christmas songs forget it. This has a whole CD of Frank Sinatra's Christmas song and the rest of the albums are a mix of mainly Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby Christmas songs with a few other "Crooner" acts thrown in. There is no Sammy Davies Jr at all.

The versions here seem to very from live versions and a few studio versions where available, They are listenable but do vary in quality(they are 50+ years old to be fair, at the price it is around £4 its still good value for money.

If after a real Rat pack album avoid this, If after some classic Christmas songs and a cheap price maybe give this a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Genesis's with Ray Wilson and less pop., 2 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Calling All Stations (Audio CD)
Firstly I can not help but feel this is Genesis's marmite album "you either love it or hate it".
Personally I think Ray Wilson was an inspired choice for vocals and he has brought a new edge to the band that is a bit heavier and less commercial. A bit more Peter Gabriel and a bit less Phil Collins(who I both like and respect solo and within the band).

OK to the tracks,Over all they are strong with 4 highlights for me,

Calling all stations- Good rocky start for the album
Congo- Good rocky track good drum work
Not about us- Almost like Noel Gallagher wrote it, more a nice ballad.
The Dividing line- The most Genesis track on the album

I would say buy this and ignore the fact its not Phil or Peter on vocals, You will probably not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best way to get in to Seasick Steve, 18 Nov. 2011
Having bought all Seasick Steve's albums so far it was a debate whether to get this "Best of" hits and the fact the deluxe version comes with a full live DVD swung it for me, and this set is very good value for money.
Seasick Steve is really an enigma in modern music with such a raw homemade sound and heartfelt blues lyrics and this compilation really showcases his talents as well as gives a great introduction to anyone who does not know his music yet.

The fact that in 2011 in the day of plastic pop a man can come along with home made instruments and sing blues and folk songs is a real pleasure, I say if you like real music welcome to Seasick Steve the worlds most famous Hobo.

5.0 out of 5 stars British comedy classic, 11 Nov. 2011
The first thing I need to clear up is this show is NOT racist but IS about bigoted characters and as such is not very polically correct. Alf Garnett was created Johnny Speight to show how some people can be so bigotted, He was not intended to be likeable and in fact overall in the show he comes off worse through the whole series. Warren Mitchell who played Alf has always said it annoyed him when people came to him and said how great Alf was saying what he did, he said they were not getting the joke and in effect the joke was on them.

Now to the series itself, for me the show is made by the characters around him in particular his gay Lodger Winston(Marigold) played by Eamonn Walker who is just superb, and also Carmel McSharry as Mrs Hollingbery who has a love hate relationship with Alf and Arthur English who appear's as Alfs best mate in the first 5 series. Alfs wife Else played by Dandy nichols appears in first series, But sadly Dandy died at end of the first run. This changed the dynamic of the future series but did allow for characters such as Marigold and Mrs Hollingbery to shine through.

You will not see this show much on the TV and yes its very policically incorrect, But its also a shining light in comedy and shows how people can be so bigotted because they lack some of knowledge or abilty to understand how wrong they are.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a classic album, But not bad either, 10 Nov. 2011
As a big fan of Oasis and somebody who feels Noel is one of the best modern songwriters I have to say that this album is a bit of a mixed bag partly as its missing something that would give it that edge. I think that something is Liam.It also feels a bit recycled Oasis tracks rather than fresh and new, it also pays tribute to the likes of Ray Davies and the Kinks etc which ironically is another band where two brothers can't get along.

The songs flow well and are a bit closer to earlier Oasis than the later albums which is a good thing, and Noel can sing as we all are aware, However I think Liam's snarly vocal would of pepped up a few tracks a bit better. The thing that made Oasis work was Noel's great song writing and Liam being a great frontman, Apart so far neither has really hit the right note for me.

Don't dismiss this album totally as it well written and recorded and has a few really good highlights, But don't expect a classic either as this is not yet Noel's solo finest hour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great music but price too high, 5 Nov. 2011
This review is from: 25 Years (Audio CD)
Nobody can argue that Sting is a huge talent, and also it goes without saying this is a great collection of his songs. But having had chance to look through the boxset(not my own I add) I can not help but feel its worth around half the asking price, especially as there are boxsets by other worldwide acts with many more discs going for far less.
Don't get me wrong the boxset is well presented and looks good, its just the price tag dragging it down in my view.

I am going to sit and wait until it drops to around £35 to £40 and then snap it up, and for the music its a 5 star effort.
