This review is from: Damn You, Autocorrect! (Paperback)
This is such a funny book, even if you don't own a smartphone! The mistakes happen because of predictive text and through a "fuzzy logic" system which learns from it's owner's patterns of speech - in an ideal world this would save time, but when electronic gremlins give even the most routine messages a surrealistic toilet-humour twist the results are hilarious!

Very funny - this was my introduction to the world of misprints and mangled syntax!

It's not one of Carpenter's classics, but it has an excellent bluesy soundtrack and a clever "conspiracy theory come true" storyline. Lots of films that don't need a re-make get the treatment, so why wouldn't a film that could be wildly popular be considered?

I rate this as one of Al Pacino's best films! "Be careful what you wish for - you might get it" would be an apt way of summing-up his character's position for most of the film: Viktor Turanski is a washed-up film director who craves recognition but despairs of the vapid and self obsessed Hollywood system he's immersed in.
This changes when he's given a high tech computer program by a crazed fan/programmer who dies shortly afterwards. "Simone" is seemingly a God-given opportunity for him to succeed, but as her fame increases exponentially he's left floundering in his own creation's wake...

Well, it's good if you've never seen "Koyaanisqatsi" but as far as I'm concerned the sequels follow the same formula as the original but with less success. Maybe the element they lack is an overarching critique of society, which the viewer thinks they've arrived at by themselves because the images they've seen are so disparate and the "means of suggestion" are so subtle; It keeps Philip Glass in a job, but for me it's a case of "diminishing returns".

Not QUITE like any SF film made before or since - it shares a theme/viewpoint with certain types of horror film that there are some borders mankind only crosses at it's peril. So what does the spacecraft in question and it's unfortunate crew do? Folds space onto itself and disappear through a black hole! (they obviously didn't read the instructions first)

4.0 out of 5 stars ... for Jennifer Lawrence's performance (which is never less than good in anything I've seen her in), 11 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this quite formulaic and predictable but worth watching for Jennifer Lawrence's performance (which is never less than good in anything I've seen her in). There are only paranormal overtones to the film, it's not a ghost story/creepy old house film as such - think "serial killer" and Anthony Perkin's "Norman Bates" in "Psycho" and you're getting warm!

5.0 out of 5 stars Night - Clubbing...., 28 May 2014

I heard this on 6 Music recently for the first time in many years: It hadn't dated at all, still as understated and melodic as ever, so I thought I'd buy a copy on an appropriate format - digital! A lot of music these days seems to want to bludgeon you into submission with it's shrillness and bombast, think of this as an antidote for those who are sick of clubbing!

Imagine having a back-catalogue as good as Kraftwerk's! From any perspective they're iconic, especially to anyone with a background in electronic music like myself: The stand-out track has to be "The Model", which combines their glacial and futuristic melodies with an incisive pop vision - they like to see themselves as cyborgs and automatons, but they're much too human for that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel - League...., 20 May 2014

This review is from: Travelogue (Audio CD)
If your only exposure to Phil Oakey and Co is the likes of "Don't You Want Me" then their pre - "Dare" material may come as a bit of a surprise: It's more J G Ballard than Giorgio Moroder, as though they're playing with the idea of commercialism rather than being a part of it. Sheffield's answer to Kraftwerk? Yes, but there's a lot more going on here.
I find this and "Reproduction" (their first venture) much more imaginative than their later releases, science fiction meets existentialism via a bloke with a lop-sided haircut - approach with the knowledge that it's hugely camp and tongue-in-cheek and take it from there!
