4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps not for all, 10 Jan. 2014

An extraordinary collection of Keller's contributions to getting Britten noticed at a rather glum time in England .I can't go all the way with some of his ideas/opinions but he certainly gets the intellectual juices going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, 10 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some of the reviews are rather negative but I thought the book a marvellous journey through Bernstein's life.
The only criticism for me,there are not enough letters describing his thoughts on performers,as an example Callas in Medea at La Scala,The person that comes out of it the best is Aaron Copland.Surely the most generous of men to his colleagues and rivals.
Recommended.

Some of the contributor's may not interest everybody but imagine how hard tit will be to get hold of this and other books in a few years time.I can't imagine that the print run will be exactly huge..

Without doubt the best commentary on Britten so far.Mr Kildea is far removed from the cabal of Aldeburgh and is able to make comment on many things that would have been almost forbidden in the past.Certainly a more balanced telling than the Humphrey Burton opus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity, 29 Dec. 2012

Too high a percentage of performances that are already available in good sound.Certainly there would have been other performances that could have neen included.Sound quality is very good and the box is very robust

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous culmination., 26 Dec. 2012

At last the final volume of the letters detailing the extraordinary life of Britten. Not someone I would like to meet because of his hypochondria but what ever his flaws his music is and has been a part of my life or a very long time.Reading about his trials and tribulations is ,for me ,fascinating. Not many " composers" around these days will engender the same amount of interest post mortem.I feel.
