1.0 out of 5 stars So this is meant to be legendary?, 19 Mar. 2016
This review is from: The Damned [DVD] [1969] (DVD)
This is simply awful: Visconti's nod towards the growth of a New European Cinema but deadened by bourgeois sensibilities, rank homophobia and a desire to shock (but in a safe, bourgeois way)

Even Rampling and Bogarde are lost in this mess as the direction falls apart and the actor's performances along with it.

I couldn't help but think of 'Tristana' as I watched this as Buñuel went in the opposing direction to Visconti: a director who had spent his career making shocking films using ideas of 'good taste' in a fresh and interesting way (and the final seconds of this far better film are more shocking than the whole of The Damned.)

5.0 out of 5 stars flawless, 30 Dec. 2013
i was sceptical of blu-ray but this has been one of the films that has changed my mind.

the sound and picture are so clear that they bring out nuances in the acting i had otherwise not seen and made for an even more moving experience.

i really can't say more but i will be looking out for more blu-ray discs from this company.

1.0 out of 5 stars rip off, 16 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
first the disks where issued individually and i bought each one, watching them that night.

then came the box which i was tempted to get even though i had the dvds already but i resisted.

then came the news that the robert powel series would be released on dvd - i'm sure a number of people bought that without a moment's thought.

then there's this with added extras and the remaining bbc material.

this is blatant exploitation and nothing else.

Doctor Who - Battlefield [DVD] [1989]
Doctor Who - Battlefield [DVD] [1989]
Dvd ~ Sylvester McCoy
Price: £6.95

3.0 out of 5 stars i love mccoy and ace but..., 22 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
battlefield is poor: a great two part adventure ruined by being extended too long, poor writing ('you and your freaky friends') and the lack of bravery in that it offered the chance to kill off the brigadier and have some gravity but instead chose to be shallow.

i still enjoyed watching this but it's deffenatly an also ran which lags sadly behind all the other mccoy era adventures including even time and the rani

5.0 out of 5 stars another classic from 'my doctor', 22 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
everyone claims that every doctor who fan has 'their' doctor well my doctor is mccoy.

returning to dr who after a long time i am struck time and time again by how many enduring tv memories come from the mccoy era: a man walking through vampires holding out a hammer and sickle badge, a joke turning bad in a corner shop and kites with eyes.

the last of these images come from this dark little tale where the doctor and ace (by far the best companion since the early 70s) go to see an intergalactic circus against ace's better wishes (she's afraid of clowns)

this adventure is a dark affair dealing with our fear of 'others' (the automatons), issues of compliance, the dangers of a sensationalist culture and...well clowns because we all know clowns are terrifying.

the run of doctor/ ace adventures was cut unfortunately short with the wonderful 'survival' just as it had began to unify direct political commentary with discussions of mythology, feminism and monsters.

the mccoy ear stands as the point at which dr who began to show a level of depth and intelligence reminiscent of the quatermas shows of a few decades before. sadly we never got to see where it could have gone and the doctor/ ace years remain as one of television's greatest 'what ifs'

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect but not for some, 22 Sept. 2013
the name of this synth is apt - it really can sound brutish and thick but can also be used to produce delicate, ethereal sounds and switching between the two is incredibly easy.

i bought this synth because i was interested in the basics of making music, interested in getting down to the level of thinking of wave forms and their manipulation, and this synth offers just that: you construct the sound, primarily, through manipulating pure waveforms and then processing these. if this is what you want rather than using pre-sets then this is the synth for you and it's power, even at low volume levels, is phenomenal.

if you're looking for something fast, simple and 'classic' sounding then this is perhaps not the synth for you as there are no pre-sets and any set-up you find which you like you have to record by hand but if you want to micro-manage sound then this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great synth but slightly limited by it's reliance on 'synth' sounds, 22 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is a fine synth with a wide range of sounds and possibilities for changing sounds but...well it's all a little 'synth' that is the sounds are very reliant on reproducing a recognisable 'synth' sound and though it is possible to move beyond something that sounds like a classic synth it takes quite a bit ok knowledge of how synthesisers work to do this.

good but, compared to something like a minibrute, not great.

i do, however, recommend the vocoder settings on this.

4.0 out of 5 stars at times confusing but wonderfully evocative and funny, 9 Aug. 2013
I see so many people voice their disgust at this film for being full of fart jokes but in that sense it is close to the source text which is rude and bawdy. if you don't want jokes about farts, bodily functions and sex then may i suggest you read dickens because Chaucer's text is full of them.

regardless of what some reviewers say this film is beautiful with breath taking compositions and beautiful costumes. it sounds wonderful too with a mix of unaccompanied singing, out of tune liturgical nonsense and street sounds.

my only real complaint is that it can sometimes be confusing for someone who has not read the source text. i watched this with my partner and had to explain what was happening at many points.

The Holy Mountain [2007] [DVD]
The Holy Mountain [2007] [DVD]

1.0 out of 5 stars visually stunning but cruel, disgusting and worthy of contempt, 5 Nov. 2012
I had intended to watch this film for quite some time and we reminded of it's existence when a friend made an alternative soundtrack for the first fifteen minutes. i wish i hadn't.

i watched cannibal holocaust and was less disgusted than i was by this film, atleast then they didn't originally set out to kill and torture animals but jodorowsky did and he's done it in other films (el topo) and even joked about raping women on set.

jodorowsky goes so far beyond any semblance of decency, humanity or compassion for other sentient beings in this film and is unrepentant.

disgusting in the extreme.

5.0 out of 5 stars science is beautiful, 27 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Birds of America (Hardcover)
I got this today after looking for a well printed edition of Audubon's works.

This meets the bill; printed on heavy paper, clear illustrations, beautiful colours, presented in the original order and presented in a sturdy slip case.

If anyone ever says that science had no eye for beauty then I'll strap them to a chair and make them read this delightful nd playful volume.
