5.0 out of 5 stars Time has not withered it........., 23 Jan. 2009

I was very pleased to secure a DVD of this TV film from 1983. The setting is the troubles in Northern Ireland and it captures in a well crafted story of a British agent in the Ardoyne the daily horrors of the conflict and its effect on family life. It is interesting to be taken back to a time when the conflict was still in the daily news and to learn of the political intrigues on both sides. This is a gripping film which I strongly recommend. The haunting title music from Clannad strangely captures the poignancy of the torment and loss and which leaves many scenes fixed in the memory. A classic.

This film has stood the test of time perhaps because its lessons are timeless. It is a convincing and entertaining portrayal of the political complexities that often prevail where ideologies conflict. In this case the setting is the IRA conflict but the subtleties of political wrangling are worldwide. If this makes the film seem dry and uninteresting then accept my assurances it is not. It is a very human story that is well told and acted. It is a well aimed punch at the solar plexus and it makes its point. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too True to be Good......................., 20 Jan. 2009

This book is a great read not only for the breadth of its analysis of the causes for the current global financial dilemmas but also for its accurate predictions. It highlighted the problems of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and predicted their sorry outcome over a year before the events unfolded and long before the other experts in the field woke up the the issues. The author is singularly placed to make a creditable witness of the matters on which he writes.I sincerely hope most of the dire predictions do not materialise as we are then going to be in globally dire financial and social straits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying High, 15 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Trapeze [DVD] (DVD)
It is over 40 years since I first saw this film but time has not diminished its appeal. It has a taut and convincing storyline with good acting and a fine script. The principal delight are the trapeze scenes which are magnificently performed. The ambition of the young flyer (Tony Curtis) is to learn from the old cynical circus hand Burt Lancaster how to execute one of the circus's great feats namely the triple somersault mid air. The main thrust of the storyline covers their growing joint realisation that they can achieve this together. The love interest adds a relevant and pointed aspect to the psychological interaction of the two male leads. Buy this film. It is a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitter Sweet Rites of Passage, 11 Aug. 2008

This film is almost ten years old but it retains its relevance and interest because of its timeless theme that of the hit and miss elusive search for a soulmate and the false paths taken on the way.The script and acting are first class and the music score (also available on Amazon) is expertly woven into the plot. A classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blowing (and drawing) hard...., 10 Aug. 2008

Just a line to fully endorse the first reviewer. I have always wanted to play a musical instrument but found the piano and guitar required a manual dexterity that defeated me. However this book contains an excellent CD which encourages you to copy the pieces played, against the backdrop of a good supporting band. I have mastered the playlist in just five months and am now looking to expand my knowledge and perhaps try and play a chromatic harp also.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Slice of London Life, 3 Aug. 2008
This review is from: The Speakers (Paperback)
This book captures the London phenomenon of Speakers Corner in it's classic glory of the early 1960's. Four speakers are highlighted and their very individualistic views of the world around us are shared with the author. They are all eloquent in exhibiting their distaste of conformism and the subtle control of citizens by the state through its various agencies. This book is very much of its age in that the characters it describes were very probably the "walking wounded" following the social disruption of the last world war. It is stimulating to hear their amusing and often intimidating views. There is also a sense of sadness about them not because they saw themselves as victims of the times they lived in but rather that in a different age they may well have honed their skills to a more enterprising social use. As it is we have a delightful and provoking book which I believe is a minor classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Que libro!, 22 May 2008
This review is from: El Espanol practico
Once I embark on a hobby or venture I tend to buy every available book or gadget as invariably some tools are better than others in achieving the objective. Of all the Spanish language books and courses I have acquired, this is easily the best. There are 53 lessons each comprising a vocabulary, a few idiomatic expressions, a short verbal exchange between characters in different scenarios (often very amusing), then notes on the grammar and finally some exercises to which the answers are provided. It is therefore a very balanced approach which I have found very rewarding My progress has been rapid and I strongly recomment this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Addition to the Student of Greek's Library, 1 Feb. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been studying Classical Greek for eight months and have been alternating between Peter Jones's book and that of John Taylor, both available on Amazon.

However I have also found this volume to be an extremely valuable tool for a number of reasons. Firstly the text is packed with apt tests and practices throughout for which the answers are provided. As I am not in a class nor have a teacher I find that this is extremely useful aid.

Also as I have a Roman Catholic upbringing the biblical phrases given as grammatical examples have the added effect of driving home the point.

The grammar is taught in a logical and helpful manner and a real sense of progress is experienced. The layout and print used is pleasing on the eye which is important when one is likely to spend some hours gazing over the text.

It is a pleasure finally to hear the spoken Greek in the CD but I was slightly disappointed that this was spoken in an American accent given the English University background to the book. Also I have some issues with the pronunciation. I think I prefer Peter Jones's tape to this CD. You can buy the book independent of the CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Biggles - For Boy's of Eight to Eighty, 1 Feb. 2008

Having more time on my hands in semi-retirement I have been revisiting some of the keen enthusiasms of my youth. I was interested in establishing why one's interest had been so captivated in those tender years.

I am pleased to say I hugely enjoyed this compendium of four stories. The author is a convincing and exhilarating storyteller. The heroes are of course Biggles, Algy and Ginger who are often perilously close to disaster. Although one suspects that the heroes will always pull through, such is the assurance of the writing that one retains a real sense of impending doom until the plot is successfully resolved.

For someone of my generation the honesty and integrity of the heroes and their lack of cynicism are admirable qualities. I would love to think that the current generation would treasure the same principles and re-live the Biggles adventure stories.
