The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs
The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs

4.0 out of 5 stars More of Welsh's Dark Spaces, 14 April 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book has received poor reviews. I'm an Irvine Wesh fan , found it a good read . Welsh has neutralised the Scottish dialect as compared to his other novels , and introduced characters with obvious influences from those in his others such as Marabou Storks Strang and Filths Police Officer to create this dark diverse tale ,which has Welsh's usual elements of toilet humour alcoholism, drug addiction in this case further insites in to sexuality, identity and sex and depravity. In Master Chef's Welsh delves in to some of his most darkest spaces in a modern day perverse working class Jekyl and Hyde/ Dorian Gray in Edinburgh's Leith. I found it quite strong in his new area's of viewpoints, similies , metaphors, stream of conciousness. The Bedroom Secrets of The Master Chef is one of Welsh's best and blends horror humour with Welsh's obscene and bizarre. Don't listen to the negative reviews read it !

3.0 out of 5 stars Find it hard to slate a NU Cool album, 21 Mar. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been a fan of Hed Kandi and Nu Cool series since the first in the late 90's . What's best about this series is the diversity, from house dance to chill/R& B. I was suprised that on Mark Doyles departure , the new Kandi team brought out what I saw as one of Kandi's best album's last Year Nu cool 2006 .For the 2007 Nu Cool I've played it again and again but "NO" it's got none of the Kani magic.I found it a jagged inconsistant mess. Disc 1's highlite and highlite of the bunch is Japan's Jazztronics latin scratcher superb!, this is joined by half baked electro and some interesting disco. Soulstars are not a bad groove. Disc 2 which is allways the downtempoe chilled side of Nu Cool only's interest was Stockholm Cyclo , Jose Gonzalez One Self. All in all I find it hard to see that this album could receive such reviews , when I find it no where up to the quality of Nu Cool 2006.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not his best but give it a chance!, 18 Feb. 2007
This review is from: Temptation (Hardcover)
Douglas Kennedy's 7th novel seems to have received quite poor reviews.I read this in a few days, like all of Kennedy's novel's Temptation's a page turner . Kennedy returns to the male character in the first person, in this case David Armitage a struggling scriptwriter gets the breakthrough to the US West Coast big time, writing a succesful sitcom. In the cut throat world of vitrial media, and his encounter with bilionaire tycoon Philip Fleck. It's well plotted with elements of his earlier novels Big Picture and The Job ,yet it does lack somewhat the originality of other Kennedy masterpieces, by the time I read the last page I felt as if I'd been cheated out of a few chapters.Condemed as superficial and poor by other critics, I disagree. Iput this in the same category as his earlier works The Dead Heart,Big Picture and The Job and it's probably the weakest of that group, as Kennedy's other novels covered female characters. But give temptation a chance it's not that bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like Hed Kandi You'll Love Housexy, 16 Jan. 2007
This review is from: V/HOUSEXY SPRING `06 (Audio CD)
This was a Christmas present I received, as part of my revival to the world of dance music. Thanks to my Hed Kandi collection.First play in the car wasn't keen, but have since played this continuously on the MP3 at the gym in the lounge. Housexy Spring 2006 is on fire.Stylish Club dance music . From disco house, to deep house to Ibiza baleiric electro grooves. This is a quality collection of house which connoisseur's of the genre will be quite familiar with. For me side 1 was slightly jagged but side 2 perfect with Hajime Paul & Emanuel's Stonebridge remix being the trumps up winner also Restless & Volatile, Def-E- Seamus, Walken High life and Sandy Brown beeing hot on it's heels.Only complaint is I like a break in between tracks as opposed to the continuos mix on this collection.I love Hed Kandi's collections' If you like Hed Kandi, you'll love this it's a crossover between Disco Heaven, Disco Kandi and Beach House.I'm out to get my next Housexy album

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate follow up to Beyond Skin and Prophesy, 29 Sept. 2006

I allways look forward to a Nitin Sawhney album , I've seen this genius live and his post Beyond Skin albums are the most appealing, to me . After the masterpieces Beyond Skin and prophesy, Human left me uncertain of Sawhney's direction. For Philtre Nitin Sawhney is back to the diversity of his cocktail of Asian flava's, latin, flamenco, drum and base, electronica, housy soul with a variety of guests. The tempoe for Philtre is down beat dark yet refreshing, the vocals superb , there's still Sawhney's sidekick Tina Grace singing on tracks .Philtre is a continuation of the enchanting chilled out experience of Nitin Sawhney, as he ventures in to newer directions. My only complaint is why it's taken me so long to discover Philtre. And also How can such an outstanding collection have been passed by as it's as good as Beyond Skin and Prophesy!

THE KINGS OF JAZZ

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz for every category of jazz lovers, 25 Aug. 2006
This review is from: THE KINGS OF JAZZ (Audio CD)
I got this recently , and was impressed with the collections diversity. What more can you ask for compiled by two specialists in the genre of the jazzy dance .Veteran Giles Peterson and West Germany's finest mixmen Jazzanova.Side 1 is more traditional with classics including Donald Byrd, Roy Haines,Mark Murphy to John Coltrane, this is classic Giles Peterson's colection. Disc 2 is Jazzanova's cutting edge choice of nu jazz grooves remaining pretty cool sleek and downtempoe with choice offerings featuring Two Banks and four a classic from japan's UFO and 4 hero offering my favourites. Whatever your choice of jazz there should be something here for you whether it's the grooves and base of Roy Haines , or the seductive Horns of Coltranes Equinox or the laid back jazz electronica of 4 hero. Even if you are one of these people who instantly say. I DON'T LIKE JAZZ !because if that's the case I'm sure you'll be crossing over once you've heard this collection of kings.Forget the dodgy CD cover just listen to the content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spot on sundrenched grooves from team Kandi, 8 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Beach House 2006 (Audio CD)
To me this is another winner from the new Hed Kandi Team , Serve Chilled 2006 is the perfect partner to this. As far as the beach house summer rhythms go this is one of the better collections. Disc 1 falls a bit flat in to the distinctive All Bar 1 summer background of female singers sounding alike , even Kaskade and Late Nite Alumni don't offer anything special. Disc 2 is the runnaway success and with predominantly instrumentals , ventures in to newer teritories with heavy influences of jazzy, latin and afro funk grooves. The sort of grooves to rip your summer parties apart , Hardsouls Bounson is a killer you could find yourself limbo dancing in a sarong to the ethnic afro grooves , Sunburst band and Physics jazzy grooves Soul Central Stereo Sushi deep house style.Hed Kandi continue to do it right , this is one for your heatwave summer gatherings, one to get you going and uplift you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect chilled companion to Beach House, 29 Jun. 2006

Serve Chilled and Winter Chill are my favourite Kandi Series, with Winter Chill slid in to the melodic house merged with Snow patrol and I am Kloot indie route. It's great to see the summer revival of This series which about six years down the line from the first releases manages to just get better. Mark Doyle has gone but the new Kandi team seem to keep up the grooves with this awesome collection of chilled grooves varied from soulful to old school style jazzy to quality laid back house and electronica. With the hottest tracks being the crystaline bio rhythms of Ganga's double act on disc 1 Also on 1 are stalwarts in the field of downtempoe Bent, Jazzanova and Four Hero. Disc 2 starts with a few misses Henry Mancini's remastered classic to slushy , but settles in to some fine latin grooves Crazy P's soulful offering is good. . This is another winner from the Kandi team and one for chilling out on the beach to, on the patio or at 35,000 feat the collection of grooves and rhythms are similar to the beach house selection but on a wind down scale . Check this one out this summer !

5.0 out of 5 stars Kennedy keeps getting it right !!!, 15 May 2006

This review is from: State Of The Union (Hardcover)
For State of The Unioun Douglas Kennedy has taken another female character and we meet Hannah Buchanan and cover over forty years of her life . As most of Kennedy's charactars are wealthy East Coast white professionals. This book was slow for me I cared less about Hannah and her over privelidged family and quite boring lifestyle as she settled in to smalltown life with doctor husband and commited a far fetched sin adultry with a radical. More than halfeway through the book I was seeing this as Douglas Kennedy's dullest read, but Kennedy being the literary genius that he is shifted into high speed and caused an explosion as the novel really exploded to hungry compulsion as revelations alienation, tragedy political and media issues all merged to make this a winner. Kennedy has been my favourite writer since I read The Big Picture, Dead Heart and The Job which are my favourite novels of the last decade, I was a bit aprehensive when Kennedy took on the female characters in Pursuit of happiness and A special Relationship as they slightly fell in to romantic fiction genre but no they stepped right up to also being diverse novels.Kennedy's writing has shades of John Irving to me . State of the Unioun is a highly reccomended read ,but do give the earlier works a read. Trust me Kennedy does not dissapoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars A CLassic Blockbuster is born !!, 7 May 2006
C.S Lewis's Narnian Chronicles have fascinated me since I was at school.Especially The Lion Witch and The Wadrobe and Prince Caspian. This Walt Disney -Walden Media production is well over deferred. I did find this somewhat dissapointing as the dialogue quite poor and cheesy in many cases and the acting weak , besides young Lucy's touching performance, Tilda Swinton as the witch was brilliant yet could have been more powerful and evil , The great Lion Aslan however was faultless yet more emphasis could have been given on his magic and command. The atmosphere of the Narnian ice age was superb and quite gothic , the digital images and soundtrack spot on.It's worth comparing this for future referance to the late 80's BBC series Narnian Chronicles, these were superior in being closer to the book, acting and dialogue better, however it lacked the hollywood funds for digital effects and the talking animals were ridiculous humans in pantomine attire. Also if this has bowled you over and you can't be bothered to read all of the C.S Lewis Chronicles. Amazon do an excellent audio book BBC series. If you havent seen this blockbuster get it ,It's good, the only drawback was it missing out to King Kong in 2006's Oscars.
