5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Mr & Mrs Beresford !, 22 Jun. 2008
It was awesome to get Miss Marple and Tommy & Tuppence on the same billing ! Geraldine McEwan gels very well with Greta Saarchi and they annoy Col Beresford as much as David Horrovitch's Inspector Slack used to get cheesed off with Joan Hickson's Miss Marple . Seeing June Whitfield & Leslie Philips on the same billing 46 years after Carry On Nurse is a treat for fans of great acting institutions . This is a great treat and sadly a rare one as Geraldine McEwan has now packed it in as Miss Marple and so we will not see her opposite Greta Saarchi & Anthony Andrews in any future Marple and Tommy & Tuppence tie-in's . Well done Chorion for a stunning , well acted and superbly edited piece of work . This is the best Marple so far - lets hope that Julia McKenzie gets to film a few more Tommy & Tuppence novels if they can hit this high standard again ! It is a dark , menacing tale with just enough humour to stop it being too bleak like some of the recent Poirot's have been .

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad at all !, 22 Jun. 2008
It was great to see James Fox , Joanna Lumley , David Walliams , Jamie Theakston and Tara Fitzgerald playing their parts so well . It was a very lavish & stunning piece of work - the bumbling , comic coppers take the edge off of an otherwise dark storyline . The real treat of course is Ian Richardson and one had to laugh at Miss Marple declining a lemonade and wanting a ginger wine ( plus a bit of whisky ! ) - what would Joan Hickson say !?! Miss McKewan plays the part like your favourite aunt who is unshockable and full of life . Fans of Joan Hickson might lament the lesbian twist at the end but as some of Agatha Christies novels had a gay/lesbian subtext ( like Five Little Pigs , Cards On The Table & A Murder Is Announced not to mention The Moving Finger ) you have to wonder whether or not these recent adaptations have been not so much modernisation but just a blatant depiction of what a censor aware Dame Agatha Christie could only hint at to the intelligent reader . I think being faithful to the novel by hinting is enough - it is better to let people make up their minds rather than going over the top . I know that the aim is to bring Agatha Christies stories to a modern audience but retaining the beautiful subtlety of her writing would be a great success .
But that said it is great that we are getting more Agatha Christie based TV movies and after all half a loaf is better than no bread ! This TV show is faithful enough to the original book - after all in A Pocket Full Of Rye with Joan Hickson a different person does the murder than is the case in the book . Joan Hickson fans need to be a bit less selective in their criticism of Geraldine McKewan's efforts !

3.0 out of 5 stars Well I never !, 22 Jun. 2008
Robert Powell , Tim McInnery , Derek Jacobi , Janet McTeer and Rachel Tier all do a very good job in a well filmed attempt to update the Miss Marple franchise . Geraldine McKewan is very brave to try and follow on after Joan Hickson and both of them have the merit of looking and sounding like the Miss Marple of the novels . It is a stunning TV Movie but the excecutions at the end are a bit distressing . But it does point out that thoughts of adultery & murder can give birth to death if not rooted out by a desire to stand before Our Lord in good conscience . In a way it is pleasing that Agatha Christie's works are being adapted for a modern early 21st Century audience but the harrowing conclusion of this episode could have been made less graphic by just having Miss Marple reading of the hanging's in the paper and then the end credits rolling as she prays some devotions . You can make a point without resorting to a Channel 4 / Sky style fetish for shocking people . Other than that the TV movie is broadly faithful to the novel and the cast does a great job . I wonder what David Horrovitch made of the re-interpretation of Inspector Slack ? The comic bombast was still there !

3.0 out of 5 stars A real Curates egg !, 21 Jun. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well on the credit side the casting is brilliant and it is superbly filmed in a lavish style that faithfully captures the period in which the books where written . The locations are first rate as is the editing and yes in Body In The Library and A Murder Is Announced the lesbian undercurrent inherent in those two books does come to the fore in the adaptations in this DVD collection . Dame Agatha had to be very careful about dealing with what was seen at the time as the seemy side of life so she could only hint ( owing to censors & public opinion ). Had it just been implied then that would have been a great artistic success that was faithful to the original text . But to make it quite so full on as it were is a step too far for those of us who grew up with Joan Hickson in the role between 1984 and 1992 . They should have been aware that they where not filming a soap or modern sitcom but rather some great Agatha Christie novels for TV .The depiction of Mrs Prothero & Mr Reading being hanged at the end of The Murder At The Vicarage was just a childish attempt to shock as well as being in poor taste . Such events where not in the original book and should be lamented as a result . The best one of the lot was Greta Saarchi and Anthony Andrews cropping up as Tommy & Tuppence in By The Pricking Of My Thumbs and one does hope that we see those two in those roles again . All in all this was a brave effort to update the Miss Marple franchise and Geraldine McEwan does do better than Margaret Rutherford , Angela Lansbury and Helen Hayes but the definitive Miss Marple in my book is still Joan Hickson . All the celebs in these TV movies suggest a healthy budget for the ITV drama department that must make Agatha Christie fans hope that there are the funds for David Suchet to get the remaining 8 unfilmed Poirot novels adapted for television. If you are keen to see some new Agatha Christie adaptations then this is is a wise purchase but admirers of Joan Hickson may well be disappointed . But at least Amazon.co.uk are offering it at a very good price !

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny indeed !, 29 May 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This really was golden age stuff ! Dear old Wally Batty was still enduring marriage to Nora while Howard & Marina where funny in those days ! Crushers bone headed stupidity adds to the comically predictable chucking out that normally befalls Compo , Clegg and whoever the third man is when they over-step the mark in Ivy's cafe . Pearl brings a greater degree of menace & Thora Hird reminds us why the mid -late 1980's where such a joy on Sunday evenings ! If you where lucky you could see her twice - once in this fine TV show & again on Songs Of Praise . Michael Aldridge does a great job & the late great Mr Wharmby is super as the slightly eccentric car lover . All in all this is a treasure trove of great Yorkshire comedy - the Dallas micky during series 9 reminds us what a shame it was that Carry On Dallas was never filmed ! If Bill Owen and co could make us laugh gagging up the oil industry then I am sure that Kenneth Williams and the Carry On survivors could have cheered us all up no end . Nora & Wally , Compo & Clegg all still gel really well with Ivy ( the other survivor from the first series ). This marks Summer Wine moving from being the slightly dour & sombre comedy drama ( with a very small cast )during the Michael Bates era of 1973-75 to a sort of David Croft style farce with a bigger cast . It was touching to hear Ivy talking about visiting Sid's grave - John Comer was much missed after his very sad demise . He was only 59 when he died in early 1984 and made the earlier series of Summer Wine far funnier due to his banter with the reast of the cast . I am very grateful the pace of DVD release is being speeded up as recent Summer Wine episodes since after Compo's funeral have been pretty poor by comparison with what was filmed in the mid 1980's to lat 1990's . They have run out of ideas & Bill Owen's demise is for Summer Wine what the death of Sid James was for the Carry On's - both would have said the show must go on - trouble was their absence made the show in question a lot less enjoyable . I do not blame Roy Clarke for this at all as he has done superbly to keep us laughing for so long . The BBC have kept it going as they have yet to find a suitable replacement . Could the new Croft comedy Here Comes The Queen ! be what the doctor ordered ? The episodes dealing with Compo's death where great black comic irony - laughing in the face of death . Peter Sallis was right to commend Roy Clarke for his scripting efforts and the cast rose to the challenge and all deserve credit for that . It will be good for Summer Wine fans when we can see that on DVD as a mark of respect to the late great Bill Owen

Michael Aldridge was first class as Seymour - watching Compo pay the price of his batty inventions fail as Clegg looks on is a treat ! I thank Amazon.co.uk for selling this classic comedy at such a fair price & I look forward to future DVD releases ! A great buy to keep the blues away !

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb modern Christian music !, 14 May 2008
This review is from: In Christ Alone (Audio CD)
This is brilliant ! See What A Morning , Speak O Lord , Oh Church Arise , Beneath The Cross of Jesus , The Power Of The Cross and In Christ Alone and Accross The Land are meaningful & inspiring modern hymns . The truths that they express about the timeless love of God & how Christians must let that be reflected in their lives by following Christ are just amazing! The tunes are very good & they are sung to perfection by Mrs Getty . This music has been a great source of inspiration to me when one feels that ones faith is under pressure as it reminds me that we can reach out to a God who loves us so much that he sacrificed his son to redeem sinners . It is a reminder to pray as it makes the listener open to the Holy Ghost by calming us & taking away stress as in tension prayer withers . If the aim was to bring those who listen to the CD closer to a God of love , peace , hope , forgiveness & joy then it has succeeded ! Anyone who wants to know the life changing love of Our Saviour then they should take advantage of Amazon.co.uk & buy this CD at such a good price ASAP ! It is very moving reading the Bible or saying the Rosary or just reflecting on the love of God when listening to the CD . Well done Mr & Mrs Getty ! The Holy Ghost worked through them to provide inspiration to those seeking Our Lord - good reason to thank God I think !

2.0 out of 5 stars Dear oh Dear !, 29 April 2008
Talk about depressing ! Public hanging , terrorism , references to homosexuality and simulated sex being seen too along with abortion being part of the storyline make it far too strong . This was not one of Agatha Christies better novels & frankly much of the dialogue from that mediocre book could have been dispensed with . A truly smart screen writer would have given a few scenes with Hastings as he talks to Poirot about the case while instead of that boring Georges Miss Lemon could have been making the tisanes in a cameo . Japp as the investigating officer would have been a very smart move as he is a brilliant character. Evil Under The Sun was a far better novel than Taken At The Flood and yet Pauline Moran ( as Miss Lemon ) , Philip Jackson ( as Chief Inspector Japp ) and Hugh Fraser ( as Captain Hastings ) did a superb job in that fine TV movie . Evil Under The Sun was a great TV adaptation & the tradegy is that Taken At The Flood could have been superb . Instead it was gloomy & tedious to say the least . David Suchet tries his best as Poirot but as with Sad Cypress he is a lonely & marginalised figure . Since 2003 Poirot has missed Miss Lemon as she could have taken him down a peg or two and the inclusion of gay characters has been homphobic to say the least . There was nothing PC , modern or progressive about the wife asking her husband in Taken At The Flood about that kind of thing - it was just demeaning to use a section of the population for a cheap jibe that served no purpose at all . I would have prefered Hastings & Poirot to be talking things over . Philip Jackson has been excellent investigating officer in Poirot & Hugh Fraser has been great as Hastings . This dismal episode shows how much Poirot has declined as a series owing to dreary script writing with nasty topics and the absence of messars Moran , Jackson & Fraser.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very glossy stuff !, 8 April 2008
This review is from: Lewis: Series 1 [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
Messars Fox & Whately play their parts very well indeed ! It is very well acted & filmed . As a person living in Oxford I am so pleased that Lewis has done so well. This series reminds me of the more recent Poirot's inasmuch as Lewis is still Lewis but he is a darker and sadder sort of person who is deprived of the comedic moments that he used to share with Supt Strange and of course Morse himself. This is Robbie Lewis as a mature person who has faced tradegy & despair at losing both his wife and best friend. Hathaway is a superb sidekick & being a sentimental sort I loved the homage that has been paid to Morse. It is very nice to see Oxford on TV again as that fair City contains many splendid sites that the show reminds locals like me just how lucky we are to live there. It is a well written & the acting is top draw. The plot lines are as strong as ever while the characters have the depth & substance of Morse itself. All in all I went in with low expectations & came away pleasantly suprised! A must for people who have seen all the episodes of Morse and who fancy something of a similar genre. It is an updated reworking of a successful franchise and it is pleasing to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I feared !, 5 Mar. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was very compelling drama indeed ! Lucy working in a cheap coffee bar , JR trying to steal Cliff Barnes girlfriend , Jason Ewing's daughter working with Cliff & Pammie to get their claws into Ewing Oil , Clayton's troubles with Jock's ' ghost ' and all the fuss about whether or not Mark Graison is dead certainly captivate the viewer and as for the complex twists & turns concerning Bobby & Jenna...

Donna Reid is better as Miss Elie than I feared . Rather like Sir Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot - not the definitive performance but most acceptable non the less . JR & Sue Ellen have their troubles as ever caused by JR's skirt chasing . All in all I thought this was a step up from Season 7 & proof positive that a series can improve as time passes on ! I keenly await season 9 while loving the respectively attitude to towards Jock . The late Jim Davis would have been very touched and rather suprised at Donna Krebbes packing in The Texas Oil Commission to run an oil company . Steve Kanaly played Ray Krebbes very well - it is nice to see a regular guy getting a look in !

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad novel !, 1 Mar. 2008
This is a dark tale of suspense , twists & turns and drama containing characters of depth and substance in a well written easy to read novel . It shows the genius of Agatha Christie ! This will not send you to sleep ( unlike Five Little Pigs & Sad Cypress ). I know it does re-use the genesis of Lord Edgware Dies but it is great fun if you want a train or coach journey to pass that bit quicker . But as with Dead Man's Folly , Evil Under The Sun & Murder In Messomptania Agatha Christie could have added Hastings as Poirot with out Hastings is rather like Morse without Lewis or Holmes without Watson . Her failing as an author was that she created great characters like Supt Battle , Col Race , Miss Lemon , Chief Inspector Japp , Mrs Oliver and of course dear old Captain Hastings but did not use them often enough . When Sir Peter Ustinov filmed Murder In Three Acts ( a TV movie based on this book ) the decision to include Arthur Hastings was the right one because with the best will in the world Mr Satterwaite was alright but Hastings is the Watson of this enterprise . There was a brief rumour on IMDb web site that Zoe Wanamaker might play Mrs Oliver in a televised version of Three Act Tradegy which does sort of embrace the logic of what I have said . That is not hard fact - just an interesting bit of speculation about how this book may be filmed should David Suchet get around to it in the next few years .
