2.0 out of 5 stars Queen Kelly, 7 Oct. 2013

Please accept my apologies if you are an aficionado of Von Stroheim's directorial films.
But just like 'The Merry Widow', I found Queen Kelly a very poor film.
I am yet to find a Stroheim movie I like. Admitidelly, I should reserve judgement until I have seen Greed, but both Queen Kelly and The Merry Widow were hugely disapointing.
I am a fan of Gloria Swanson, so I lay my indefference to the director, EVS.
EVS over exagarates the small details, a scene might carry for over 5 minutes, and ultimately all your looking at, say for example, is a lamp shade and a glass of champagne.
His stories, for me, carry little credibility. For instance, in Queen Kelly, we are introduced to the orphans when the Prince is on horseback. The orphans turn out to be, attractive flappers in their twenties, dressed as nuns poorly pretending to be innocent and underprivilaged.
Then Kelly gets smuggled out of the monastery at midnight, in a completely farcical and silly manouvre by the Prince, again, EVS is asking us to go along with it when clearly, it's a bit farfetched.
Then, we see the Prince professing undying love to Kelly, yet, very little prep work has gone on here, and we are to believe after a brief encounter, the spoilt playboy Prince would give his life to a religious woman.
And finally, the scene where Kelly marries Jan, what is all that about?? A horrible man has come into the story, why?? EVS has to push the boundaries of taste, decency etc.
When I watch a Swanson or movie from the 10's/20's, I like them with the grace, elegance, comedy, drama that they hold.
Watching Queen Kelly and the 'Africa' scene, it is purely digusting and unnecessary.
I for one, claim Ms Swanson did the right thing and pull the plug from the whole production.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond The Rocks, 1 July 2013

It's one of those movies that you have to watch over and over again because of its beauty and depth. A great film with a wonderful Valentino and Swanson. The print quality is very good, and the dvd package with its extras is also a great bonus. Milestone have taken alot of care and put in great effort with this dvd release. Milestone - THANKYOU - for this title and the numerous other films from the Silver screen you have digitalised, restored and made available.
Great note needs to be made, of course, to Valentino and Swanson, who at the time of filming must have been very dedicated and worked very hard to portray their characters with sensitivity, grace and honour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Pickford Collection, 19 Jun. 2013

Thoroughly loved and enjoyed the films in this collection.

These were my first Pickford films. I'm a massive fan of King and Florence Vidor, Adolphe Menjou, Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Bronson, Nazimova to name a few, and now Mary Pickford.

The quality of the films are fantastic, the transfer / restoration are very impressive. These films deserve nothing less!

I love these films from the 1910s and 20s. Full of heart, drama, comedy and real artistic output from everyone involved in these productions. Shame a majority of them are so damaged...lack of care from the studios in preserving them!

Not this collection though. Which Pickford film should I go for next?

Are Parents People [DVD] [1925] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Are Parents People [DVD] [1925] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

5.0 out of 5 stars Are Parents People?- St Claire 1925 Betty Bronson, 7 Aug. 2012
This was Miss Bronsons first film after the hugely succesful 'Peter Pan'. Peter Pan made Betty a huge star and gave her a massive fanbase. You can imagine how hugely anticipated the release of 'Are Parents People?' was in 1925. How would the sweet girl that portraid Peter Pan so delightfully fare in a cosmopolitan movie without fairies, pirates..?
Well, she pulls all the stops in this wonderful movie. Peter Pan turns out to be a sweet young lady with a memorable performance thats entertaining and light hearted.
The wonderful Florence Vidor and Adolphe Menjou are here too, two heavyweights of the era.
Even if you're new to silent films, this film is special.
There is a charleston soundtrack with the movie, flows well with the motion.
The dvd copy is fair, I don't think this film has had much restoration (what is going on with the major studios and their total lack of interest of preserving and promoting these wonderful films from the dawn of cinema??..)
This is the only copy out there, so although the image can be a bit rough at times, this surviving copy is highly watchable and you will forget the minor fuzziness in the motion as you will be drawn into the wonderful world of Lira and her quarreling parents.
If you're reading this, most likely you have an interest in these classic films or willing to give it a chance.
Get it! If you like it, a whole catalogue of amazing films await. If you don't, well, you have to apreciate that in 1925 this was the rage and fans went crazy over this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Girl Missing (1933) - Glenda Farrell and Mary Brian, 11 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was expecting a serious, antiquated, maybe cold film. Instead, 'Girl missing' turned out to be fun, funny, fast talking with amusing dialogue, all set in Palm Beach and the California coastline.
I think I was misled by the dvd cover (Ben Lyon has his hand over Peggy Shannon...looks abit like Dracula..)
GIRL MISSING (1933) - The self titled 'Lannigan Sisters' (G Farrell and M Brian) are two chorus girls from New York, lounging around Palm Beach, seeking there next meal ticket hunting any rich millionaire gullible enough not to see them as Gold Diggers. Well, when you are as beautiful as Mary Brian and Glenda Farrell, you can see why they chose this racket...
They run into an old acquaintance (Peggy Shannon), 'second row chorus girl with two left feet' who snubs the girls as she is engaged to a young millionaire (Ben Lyon).
She soon disappears and a $25k reward for information leading to her return alerts the Lannigans. They soon get caught up in a world of gangsters, police detectives and car chases.
While the film picks up a mini noir detective/suspense/mystery intrigue to it (Mini as in it's not full on like Double Indemnity or Sorry Wrong Number)Glenda Farrell keeps the movie running as a fun comedy with her wisecracks, one liners and faster than lightning dialogue (she was able to speak 400 words a minute so legend has it). Add to the wonderfully talented Glenda Farrell, a beautiful and prime Mary Brian, and you have a film, that in my case, you might treasure....

ILLICIT (1931) In my opinion, Ms Stanwyck is the greatest actress ever, so anything involving her is highly recommended....

Highly enjoyable classic! Betty Bronson makes a delightful Peter Pan,Mary Brian is wonderful as Wendy, and Ernest Torrence sets the standard for all actors who play Captain Hook.
This restored copy is brilliant, how many films from 85 years ago look this sharp?

Wow! The floor toms, from a drummer's point of view, sounds brilliant. No one plays like this!! Slim bass playing with a touch of distortion, tremolo you're way out of this!! Well, they do. Recommended for guitar rock lovers..
