4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but....., 12 Jun. 2013

I like Joe Hill. There is no escaping the KIng comparisons. The apple has not fallen far from the tree and there is a definite hint to the King mythology here as well as some blatant nods in that direction. The book is really good for 90% then the denouement lets it down a little. There is a real lack of "confrontation" in the conclusion and it all seems to end too soon and too easily.

It was free. It was good. What more can I say? It is worth a read without a doubt. It has a solid post apocalyptic plot with some nice twists and turns. It can be gritty at times and certainly the more prominent characters are well fleshed out. Unfortunately I suspect it is a novel that would have benefited from being fleshed out and made into a couple of books if not a trilogy.

3.0 out of 5 stars one dimensional, 12 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Clearly written with the teen market in mind. It has an excellent premise but in this first book there is no explanation of what the powers are or how Test came to have them. Instead there is a very one dimensional love story (i suspect seeking to appeal to Twilight fans) that comes across as unbelievable and then a series of action sequences distinctly lacking in a sense of genuine peril.
I understand there are more books in the series and it may pick up as revelations are made. Certainly there is a good book in there somewhere. It is just a pity the author failed to find it.

The only let down in what is an otherwise excellent book in the vein of Joe Abercrombie is the spelling errors. They do not necessarily get in the way of the enjoyment of the book but can grate a little.
Nevertheless no hesitation in recommending this book and the remainder of the trilogy. All are of a significant size, interesting story and well rounded characters. At the price they ought not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start, 14 Mar. 2013
This review is from: The Grim Company (Kindle Edition)
I picked this up on the Kindle store not expecting too much but being pleasantly surprised. It is a mature fantasy with a strong nod in the direction of Joe Abercrombie. Even some of the characters have a similar feel to them. Nevertheless that ought not to be a criticism. the story moves at a cracking pace and the subject matter intrigues. My only minor criticism is that I would have liked a bit more exposition on the back story but given the ending I imagine it will continue to drip feed through the next books.

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality, 5 Mar. 2013
The series has been excellent. The characters storyline and pacing are spot on. Add in a well thought out and new magic system and bob's your uncle.
This book feels "denser" than the last two and was a little harder to read)(or at least felt that way). Nevertheless it was hugely enjoyable and whets the appetite for the next book. With the cliffhanger ending being, quite literally, a cliffhanger ending the next instalment can't come soon enough.
My only problem was I felt the editing of the book was flawed. I think the switch between the stories of Jardir and Arlen could have been more regular. Would have helped with pacing.
Generally then highly recommended. I give it 4 stars only because I tend to find too many correspondents giving 5 stars for everything.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but too short!, 5 Oct. 2009
This review is from: Live in The UK 2009 (Audio CD)
Jason Mraz live is always worth buying although a full length live album a la Eagles Ballroom would have been the bomb! Long overdue.
Nevertheless showcases his live performance and worth it for Butterfly alone. The support acts are good too. I actually had tickets for the show but could not go. Seems i missed out!
If you are new to Jason then this is probably not the 1st thing to buy. For me it was a worthwhile collection filler. If you are after the live stuff on top of the studio albums try out the Eagles Ballroom album and definitely pick up the Live and Acoustic.

5.0 out of 5 stars classics revamped, 14 Nov. 2001
This review is from: Isn't It Romantic (Audio CD)
i bought this album about ten years ago and now want to get it on cd so i can ensure i have a copy for the next ten years. the album is a reworking of classic film show and standards imbued with the richness and melody so recognisable from feinstein. what i like most are the explanatory notes on the cover which give an insight into the thinking behind the musical choices for the album and the obvious labour of love undertaken by feinstein in finding these songs including some which have additional lyrics somehow lost to the originals. i cannot overemphasise the joy this album has brought me over the years and the constant pleasure i have listening again and again to the beautiful music. from the romance of the first song isn't it romantic with its chauvinistic backdrop through to classics like how about you to the finale wasnt it romantic the album has a balance and simplicity which is rare. my favourite has to be you're an education if nothing else for its tempo and lyrics but i would challenge anyone not to listen to this and not feel moved in some way by the tunes on it. i can't wait to have the cd in my collection for posterity's sake so i can preserve that pleasure which never seems to dull despite constant listening. thankyou amazon for continuing to stock it! if you think someone like michael ball is good then wait until you hear feinstein. it is a bit like comparing guns and roses to mozart. need i say more. go buy it!

Dreamcatcher
Dreamcatcher
by Stephen King
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars RUN OF THE MILL, 3 Jun. 2001
This review is from: Dreamcatcher (Hardcover)
I HAVE READ THE EXISTING REVIEWS AND STRANGELY I FIND MYSELF AGREEING WITH EVERYBODY ABOUT KINGS LATEST NOVEL. I AM A FAN BUT MUST CONFESS THAT I AM SOMETIMES CRITICAL OF STEPHEN KING FOR GETTING LOST ON SOME NOVELS( WIZARD AND GLASS SPRINGS TO MIND). IN ADDITION SOME OF HIS MORE RECENT OFFERINGS HAVE BEEN THIN ON PLOT AND LACKING KINGS USUAL SIDESHOW OF INTERNAL MUSINGS WHICH MAKE HIS NOVELS SO INTERESTING. DREAMCATCHER GOES BACK TO HIS ROOTS INTRODUCING WELL ROUNDED CHARACTERS(WHICH GET KILLED OFF TOO EARLY) AND A STORY PREMISE WHICH PROMISES LOTS. UNFORTUNATELY IT FAILS TO DELIVER AS MUCH AS ONE WOULD EXPECT FROM KING. THE OPENING SALVOS ARE GOOD BUT AS THE STORY TAKES HOLD IT LEAVES YOU ASKING "WHY DID THAT HAPPEN?" OR "WHAT HAS JUST HAPPENED?". IN ADDITION IT SEEMS TO START WITH A VERY BROAD PREMISE UNLIKE STEPHEN KING IE WORLDWIDE CONSPIRACY ETC WHICH IN AN X FILES STYLE OPENS UP QUESTIONS WHICH YOU WAIT TO RECEIVE ANSWERS FOR THEN INEXPLICABLY REVERTS TO KING FORM AND NARROWS TO ONE OR TWO IMPORTANT PLAYERS (THE ALIEN JONESY ETC)WITHOUT GIVING THE ANSWERS YOU WANT. THE REMAINDER OF THE NOVEL BECOMES A CLASSIC "CHASE" WHICH IS GOOD BUT STUDIOUSLY AVOIDS THE FACTS BEHIND IT AS IF BY BURYING YOU IN THE ACTION KING CAN DEFLECT YOU AWAY FROM HAVING THOSE QUESTIONS ANSWERED. AS YOU CAN TELL I BECAME QUITE FRUSTRATED WITH THIS BOOK WHICH IS SO UNLIKE ME AS FAR AS KING IS CONCERNED AND MAYBE THAT HAS COLOURED MY VIEW A LITTLE! NEVERTHELESS REGARDLESS OF WHAT I SAY AND THE FACT THAT THE ENDING DID NOT GIVE ME THE ANSWERS I WANTED ABOUT DUDDITS THIS IS STILL A GOOD BOOK AND IS WORTH THE READ. LETS HOPE THAT HIS NEXT OUTING SHOWS HIM DEVOTING AS MUCH TIME AND ENERGY TO THE SIDESHOW AND THE BIGGER PICTURE THAN THIS ONE. AND FINALLY AT LAST I HAVE SEEN ANOTHER REVIEWER MENTION THE LONG WALK WHICH IN MY VIEW WAS AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING NOVELLA!

Echo Burning (A Jack Reacher Novel)
Echo Burning (A Jack Reacher Novel)
by Lee Child
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars good but different, 24 May 2001
THE FIRST THREE REACHER BOOKS BY LEE CHILD WERE MAGICAL IN THEIR SIMPLICITY AND WERE DESIGNED AROUND THE EPONYMOUS HERO IN SUCH A WAY AS TO BE UNPUTDOWNABLE. THE BEAUTY LAY IN THE FACT THAT REACHER WAS GENERALLY INFALLIBLE AND INVINCIBLE BUT HAD WELL DEFINED MORAL BOUNDARIES WHICH HE WAS STILL WILLING TO OVERSTEP IN SUPPORT OF THE UNDERDOG. WHILST ECHO BURNING REMAINS UNPUTDOWNABLE AND IS A DEFINITE 24 HOUR NOVEL REACHER HAS BEEN CHANGED AND NO LONGER SEEMS TO BE PORTRAYED AS THE MODERN DAY EQUIVALENT OF "KING OF THE ROCKET MEN" AND TO SOME EXTENT HAS BEEN WATERED DOWN. WHETHER LEE CHILD IS WANTING TO DEVELOP REACHER INTO A MORE LASTING CHARACTER OR NOT REMAINS TO BE SEEN BUT DIE HARD FANS OF THE FIRST THREE NOVELS MAY FIND THE CHANGE SUBTLY DISCONCERTING. PLEASE DO NOT BE PUT OFF. THIS BOOK IS STILL A CRACKER AND BENEFITS FROM MORE INTRICATE PLOTLINES WHICH HAVE MORE IN COMMON WITH AGATHA CHRISTIEAS FAR AS TWISTS AND TURNS ARE CONCERNED. I SUGGEST THAT YOU BUY IT NOW-IT IS A PURCHASE YOU WILL NOT REGRET!
