5.0 out of 5 stars Great read... s, 5 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
if your starting the Manchester Physics series get this and Properties of matter../Electr.omagnetism
Atomic Physics is written in a very readable style and takes the reader through historial trace of Atomic Physics from Thomsons experiments with Cathode rays Milikan etc through to quantum physics.Takes an undergraduate from early s.tages of study up to 2nd year level of study within one book. Also details of experimental determinations of the Avagadro Number (an often dificult hypothesis to grasp-this book highlights the accuracy of its determination and within the context of experimental approximations and subsequent use throughout physics/chemistry validity).
After reading this book the reader will be prepared for more higher levels of textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great rock album, 18 July 2011
This review is from: A Little Ain't Enough (Audio CD)
I've had some good rock albums over the years, and i think this will join some of 'em.
A very well produced, and naturally awe-inspiring piece of work. The instruments are inventive, dynamic, and well integrated.Good uses
of lyrical content, and the listener entertained. In summary one of rock aces more maturer rock album. Like the genre, like the cover-tells a lot about life in general!
Give it a chance, give it a listen!
WEll done Dave, and fellow band members!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bach on guitar...., 18 July 2011
Liked the pieces, thought they were great insight into mindset of composer.I don't know if its his style, but after first 20 or so pieces, i found the sound a much of a muchness-once i'd grasped the finger technique, they sounded of a similar genre. When you hear of Bach on organ recital, it sounds that much more dimensional and feel more of a presence.Maybe its just me -i don't know. However in the latter half of book it livens up somewhat, and the pieces become famaliar.
I think if your starting on classical guitar, once youve learnt the open and first positions with a tutor/teacher, this book would really set you on the road to a very disciplined classical disciple. If you like the sounds of Bach give it a go, you will be surprised how quickly you pick up your music iq.
Major criticism is lack of tutor notes to various recitals, and a bit more elaborate history pics ...etc.
Nice book though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Diver down....., 12 July 2011
This review is from: Diver Down (Audio CD)
A truly unique heavy metal classic from Van Halen .It rates in my top 4 of theirs. It can't beat the first album and i don't think it could be beaten-an awesome classic(grab a remastered copy worth every penny).
This one takes hard rock not only into the Roy Orbison years but through years of jazz and throws in a cover from the kinks and a bit of flamenco.
This is a very broad minded approach to rock, and truly worth a great deal of credit!
Eddie manages to keep his dynamic metal guitar rocking even when playing a saucy Spanish number to woo the ladies..
An absolute corker is the Dancing in the Streets pop classic, with a great bit of heavy metal overlaying the pulsating pop rhythms.
My favourite is the Full Bug , with a twang of Backstreet blues and garage rock music with an awesome solo, will wake the neighbours until the cock crows...
Well done VH, please return your music to these classic albums.
Another fantastic 'alternative metal' album is Women and Children First.CHECK IT OUT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shredding mastery...., 12 July 2011
This review is from: Fretboard Mastery (Sheet music)
Well done the author-at last someone has written down what most guitar players are really trying to do with their instruments.
I started playing when i was 12 and i am still learning a great deal from this book.
I started shredding to records, and not really mastering some of the sax/guitar solos was missing a bit of dynamics and ear training, trying to stay with the middle sections of songs. I'm no great player, but nine times out of ten i find the rhythm and the scales with more ease now.But with this book open every day i'm learning more and more about structure of scales modes and the basic intervals, which for years i have been struggling to experiment with!
This is a great book if your wanting to take music pro-style and a real bible of clear info with good examples and ear trainers!
Even if your just starting its great to have at hand even if your just trying to shred some old hits by the radio-you won't regret it!
Happy strumming Phil

5.0 out of 5 stars Classically speaking...., 12 July 2011
I've just received this book and was delighted with its presentation and nice classical music.
I had just bought a nice classical electro-acoustic guitar from gear4music and was eager to give it a bash with this book.
The opening tune is delightful, and not hard on the hands-i'm still mastering its fingering, but find it nice to play-sounds really nice through a small microcube with a touch of reverb.
The pieces are from the great composers Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Mendhlesonn, ...etc A couple of pieces from each on average.I quickly skimmed the tracks and found them pleasing to the ear.
As an introduction to classical music this book is fantastic with a nice bit of history about the composer, and a beautiful cover- a real joy to read and play.
They make great warm up exercises too, and are written so that a near to opening position is always at hand , with some fairly easier further positions for the ambitious.
I started my classical guitar playing with the ashley series(very comprehensive) but all in notation and the higher positions can be hard to figure out unless you've known the piece apriori.
I love this book and will treasure it for years to come: the pieces are really nice and would impress even the most hardened classical listener and bring great joy.
Get this book and explore with the ashley publication version, after learning the notation -you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock on Glenn............, 6 July 2011
This review is from: Black Country Communion (Audio CD)
After having the luck and judgement to watch Glenn live with his band the Black Country Communion, this purchase was a nice momento!
I thought the band though were twice as good live, and as the cd explains, this is what this band does best-playing live.
To all Deep Purple/Sabbath fans new and old this band will have immediate appeal, although it takes the listener down a new avenue in the rock estate.
The opener is a real Black Country rocker more aligned to heavier metal fans desires. The second is a very catchy number, and the third a more sustaining rock anthem. And so it goes on...
The drummer really keeps the beat from start to end, and the bass , guitar, and keyboard interacts well with Glenn's vocal arrangements.
I don't think they'll go into the Hall of fame rock tunes but nevertheless there is enough music integrated into these songs to keep many a British rocker amused for year to come.
The sound is akin to early Cream with a tint of Whitesnake. With a bit more emphasis on chorus and bridge lines this rock outfit could go a long way for many years to come.....
Glenn's stage presence is very good-very fashionable , entertaining , and interactive with crowd, and his bass lines are very consistent throughout adding to the performance a touch of funk and driving bass lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice sounding classical guitar, 6 July 2011
This is one of the nicest guitars i've bought online. I've had a few and particularly liked an unbranded german ovation style guitar i had years ago, and decided a nylon version with a cutaway would be a nice idea, since i had just started an old course on classical guitar. The guitar is very nicely constructed with a nice grained soundboard and neck and lovely bindings throughout its construction. It is very solid and has a nice tone.
I opened the box and plugged it into my little micro cube by roland. On the acoustic setting it sounded quite thin and metallic in tone, but after playing around with eq buttons i got a reasonable tone from it.Its not the greatest tone in the world, but nevertheless very acceptable!I suppose i'd have to invest in a larger powered acoustic amp, to gain the best sound from this guitar.
As a standalone instrument it is very lovely indeed, and i will take great pride in hanging it on the wall!I suppose my only criticism is the width of neck, a bit wide for my small hands-but i'd probably have this problem with any other stock guitar-i like the thin strat necks for playability, but willing to persevere on this aspect of my playing with this one!The tuners are very elegant in their own right and are of the scrolled gold alloy types, another elegant feature added by Gear4Music.Its quite small in overall dimension, but fits nice and snug into the playing position and with the elegant cutaway you have instant access to the upper ledger lines, with no overdue stress and strains to the hand and arms.
All in all this guitar is a pleasure to own, and for my study needs, it fits the bill not only in price but overall characteristics, and i therefore wish to applaud Gear4Music for their conscientious efforts on their part in supplying this!
Happy strumming
Phil

4.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Hughes and Black Country Communion, 2 July 2011
Was lucky enough to see this band at the Buxton Opera House, and having heard him with Deep Purple and Sabbath was intrigued-even took my mum(at 83).
I must say to begin with the band is about twice as good live as on cd. The cd is alright. It won't be the best rock album you'd buy, but for an opening set BCC I and BCC II are alright. The sound is often very dynamic, aided by both Joe on guitar and keyboardist, and the very tight drumming from Jason Bonham. The drummer is relentless throughout, and a pleasure to watch live, he keeps the band on track from start to end. I've seen him live on UFO showtime-worth looking out for on Amazon!
Glenn has put in a great effort , but as the cd states , the time spent on recording these albums was short-with a bit more emphasis on chorus /bridge lines this group could go a long, long way!
The sound is of Cream with a twist of Whitesnake and blues/soul.Glenn's stage presence is very good, and communicates well with the crowd.I'd be happy to see this band play live again(with support MSG), Glenn's lyric lines are very soulfull and his tight bass lines take this band into a new 'avenue of rock'.A band to watch out for!
