4.0 out of 5 stars Not a DVD-AUDIO!, 10 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just to be clear - this, like several other DVD - video releases listed on Amazon - is NOT a DVD Audio. Not sure where the problem lies, but this is clearly a filmed performance of Rameau's weird and wonderful round-the-world tour of an opera.
The musical performance is very fine, the staging is occasionally rather forced - the linking of the Turkish section to the current immigrant crisis and the later exploration of the exploitation of women are sometimes difficult to reconcile with the music and text. But it's very inventive and Rousset holds the whole thing together very well. It won't replace the earlier Christie DVD in my affections, but it is well worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not DVD Audio!, 17 Nov. 2014
Just to be clear - this is NOT a DVD Audio disc. It's a DVD video showing a staging of two Rameau ballets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Handel from Stephen Layton, 29 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Handel: Chandos Anthems (Audio CD)
It's been a long wait since the first CD of Chandos Anthems from these forces. Worth the wait - this is a beautiful and spirited series of performances with excellent singing from chorus and soloists - Iestyn Davies in particular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb singing plus extra "hidden" track, 26 April 2013
This is a very fine recital of Handel opera arias focussing on villains. Xavier Sabata's attack and ability to sing beautifully are combined to provide a varied and fairly unusual disc. Very few of these arias ("Pena tiranna" excepted) feature on other recital discs. Minasi's direction of Il Pomo D'Oro is thrillingly effective.
There's a curiosity in that the final listed track is followed after a break of about 2 minutes by an unannounced and undocumented encore which is not tracked separately. It's "Sorge nel petto...", Goffredo's Act 3 aria from Rinaldo. Maybe hidden because it hardly fits the "bad guys" theme - Goffredo being one of the good guys from that opera! Beautifully sung. The whole disc makes me want to hear him in a complete Handel opera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant staging of Handel's last opera, 27 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This opera is one of Handel's least known, and is rarely staged. This David Alden production filmed at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam catches the essentially playful spirit of the music and presents some beautiful stage pictures - especially effective in high definition. There are no weak links in the cast, and Sally Matthews in the title role sings beautifully, her lustrous voice well attuned to baroque style. But all the singing is fine, and the witty production brings out the best in an excellent ensemble performance. This wonderful staging, energetically conducted by Ivor Bolton sheds new and revelatory light on Handel's last opera, and leads me, at least, to think that I have underrated it for many years.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful though bland, 10 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Bach - Violin and Voice (Audio CD)
This is a well-chosen selection of arias largely from Bach cantatas, each of which has a prominent solo violin component. Goerne sings especially beautifully and Hahn's playing is always sympathetic. Overall, though, there is a tendency toward blandness and too little real engagement with the music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clear-sighted performances, 22 July 2009
This review is from: Handel: Chandos Anthems (Audio CD)
Still somewhat rare among the outpouring of Handel in recent years, the Chandos Anthems represent some of Handel's loveliest and earliest English settings and have a freshness and beauty about them well worth investigating. These beautifully clear performances make me hope that this will be the first of a series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning live Shostakovich 10, 1 Feb. 2009
I was at this performance at the BBC Proms and had never imagined I would get the chance to hear it again. Memory had not played me false, it's just as spine-tingling as I had remembered. Fantastic playing from the LPO, especially the phenomenal woodwind.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine choral singing in this budget Israel, 1 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Handel: Israel in Egypt (Audio CD)
Recent issues from Nazos conducted by kevin Mallon have been promising and this new Israel in Egypt lives up to that promise. There is some excellent chorus work - essential in this of all oratorios - and Mallon's direction manages to be both dramatic and sensitive. There may be more spectacular recordings around, but at budget price this is terrific value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good performance of Handel's first London opera, 13 Mar. 2006
This review is from: Handel: Rinaldo (Audio CD)
No stars in this studio-based recording of the first opera Handel wrote for London. But consistently good singing and some stylish direction from Kevin Mallon make this set an excellent bargain - especially attractive if you are unfamiliar with this fabulous work. Handel set out to amaze and astonish his London audience and it's not difficult in this performance to realise how spot-on his instincts were. It led to a lifetime in London and, in the end, to undeniably greater masterpieces; but this opera - with appropriate sound-effects in this recording - is irresistible.
I still await a real no-holds-barred performance which might recreate the thrill which the first audiences might have experienced; and if you're looking for star singers, the Christopher Hogwood / Cecilia Bartoli / David Daniels recording on Decca is unbeatable - but it's more than three times the price... I look forward to more Handel from Kevin Mallon and colleagues.
