Citizen Clem: A Biography of Attlee: Winner of the Orwell Prize
Citizen Clem: A Biography of Attlee: Winner of the Orwell Prize
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet man who left a great legacy, 18 July 2017

Attlee is a fascinating character and a lesson to the current round of squabbling politicians. I was taught by my mother that if you want toi get something done you mustn't worry about whether you get the credit. No one else could have achieved what Attlee did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting to grips with complex management issues, 14 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a clear account, accessible to the non-specialist, of how a 'systems' approach to problems i.e. one which looks at the way the parts of the situation inter-relate, can illuminate apparently intractable problems and help the participants work together to create significant improvements. It is full of helpful suggestions for dealing with different types of situations and explaining them in lay terms rather than jargon. It should be essential reading for public service managers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Believable characters in truly fantastic SF situations, 7 July 2015

I thoroughly enjoyed The Great North Road which I only picked up because it got a good write up in the FT (of all places!). So now I am working through his other books. The story is has just as complicated a plot, just as fantastic ideas and is still peopled with a cast of believable characters. Of course this book is just the start of the trilogy which has started off with even more surprises.

5.0 out of 5 stars A topic too often ignored, 14 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very clearly and amusingly written. It gives lots of useful information without burying the reader in science. It gives good advice on nutrition without any dogmatic views on the 'best' nutrition which, in some books, is a bit over the top.
The diagrams work surprisingly well on the kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars So that's what is was all about!, 8 Jan. 2015

While I have been a Tolkien fan for nearly 50 years, and studied Beowulf at Uni, I had previously failed to spot this collection of Tolkien's lectures and essays. Reading them, opened my eyes to a whole range of thinking about what Tolkien was doing with Lord of the Rings. For the first time I was able to enjoy the various poems and songs which had seemed, in the past, to interfere with the action.
The other thing to read with this is Seamus Heaney's poetic translation of Beowulf.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important period of our history, 21 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is very surprising that no-one else has really attempted to set a novel in what was such a pivotal period of our history. The characters and situations are well drawn and it gives us a view into the events as they may have unfolded and the way things may have looked to those involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hero of the intellect, 5 July 2014

As an IT bod, Turing has always been a hero of mine and it is good to see his life and achievements explored as well as showing the terrible things that were done to him and what the UK and the world lost from his untimely end.

Ashtanga Yoga - The Practice Manual
Ashtanga Yoga - The Practice Manual
by David Swenson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to this athletic form of yoga, 5 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Absolutely brilliant. Very clear photos and explanations. Lots of simpler version off the exercises to enable those less supple, like me, to get value out of the exercise and gradually improve rather than straining to achieve some impossible posture. the author is a great advert for the method as he looks athletic and supple rather than impossibly bendy like some books. Of course he does bend but you can see that it comes from proper practice of the various stretches rather than double joints. Also you can see that your can develop your strength and movement.
