4.0 out of 5 stars A little 12yr old Afghan refugee's journey to adulthood as he travels to Britain., 12 Jun. 2017

To be honest this book has left me a little stunned. If Gulwali's aim was to enlighten his readers on the plight of the refugee asylum seeker he has certainly done that for me. His mother made the biggest sacrifice a Mother can make. She paid to get her two older boys out of the country while she remained with the younger children. Desperate to keep her two older boys out of the Talibans clutches where they would have been expected to avenge their fathers death and possibly be groomed to be suicide bombers, she sends them away against their will. What follows is a horrifying ordeal at the hands of unscrupulous agents and cruelty with pockets of kindness that help restore faith. Young Gulwali get split from his brother and at twelve years has to survive learn fast and endure hunger snd deprivation but finally arrives in the U.K. I found it illuminating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some damage to the back section which is annoying but not enough to warrant going through the rigmarole ..., 7 Jun. 2017

Some damage to the back section which is annoying but not enough to warrant going through the rigmarole of returning. Looked as if it the damaged piece had been stuck back on badly so a tad annoyed that it was deliberately sent out in this way. I will revarnish it to protect . Didn't expect a suberbly solid piece for the money but adequate. It will back on to a wall for the occasional evening sundown drinks and doesn't need to be as robust as a seat elsewhere in the garden

Silence is Goldfish
by Annabel Pitcher
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Novel on Adolescent turmoil and a quest for truth written with skill and some humour, 31 May 2017
This review is from: Silence is Goldfish (Paperback)
Do you remember adolescence? That confusing time when it was so hard to make the right decisions, to know who to trust? When sometimes you tried to be someone you were not whilst struggling to find out who you really were? A time when it really hurt to discover you had been lied to when people had ulterior motives or because they did not trust you were old enough to know the truth? In Silence is Goldfish Annabel Pitcher skilfully portrays what it's like to be 15 year old Tess who discovers her Dad is not her real Father and her whole life to date has been a lie. Shocked to the core Tess chooses to retreat into a silent world and find out the truth. In her quest she uncovers secrets that could destroy lives other than her own. Really enjoyed this refreshing book. Not a deep hard read but one you think about afterwards.

The White Woman on the Green Bicycle
The White Woman on the Green Bicycle
by Monique Roffey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Just finished this book and have to say I enjoyed it. It's a book I have found easy ..., 28 May 2017
White Woman Green Bicycle.
Just finished this book and have to say I enjoyed it. It's a book I have found easy to dip in and out having two main characters form the story. They arrive from Britain to Trinidad, a young couple with hopes and dreams of a new life together. Among the last colonials to arrive in the country they both see this world they are thrust in to in vastly different ways. Steadily it makes its mark on their characters and their relationships at a telling time in Trinidads history. But it was also a time when women themselves were devoid of power and collateral to change their lot. She is unhappy and wants to move back to England he wants to stay....so they do. This was very much how things were back then, one promised to love honour and obey and the male made the decisions and held on to the money. Younger readers not having lived through and experienced these times in general might find the protagonists infuriating in that she doesn't leave and he doesn't consider compromise. Although gentle in pace it is very much a piece of historical fiction with the backdrop set in The Trinidad of the 1950s and 1960s. The the main characters are very much influenced by starting their new lives in a country where colonialism had virtually had its day. At the start there was an excited optimism of a country verging on independence. As things progressed broken promises and unfulfilled ideals charged the atmosphere and political unrest led to violence and gang related hostilities and murder. As I have said not a difficult read, but it is an interesting one, where the history and the character types of both people are crucial to the development of a tale well told with the green bicycle playing a very symbolic part throughout the story.

When Spirits Break Free
When Spirits Break Free
by Andy Evans & Vesna Kovac
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.99

5.0 out of 5 stars ... novel that chronicles the life of "Billy" a much loved son and grandson, 28 May 2017
When Spirits Break Free is a novel that chronicles the life of "Billy" a much loved son and grandson. From his earliest years there are signs that Billy has the ability to see what others around him can't. This is something his Mother realises early in and although she doesn't fully understand it, it makes her fearful and ever watchful of her darling boy. Throughout his life Billy's good spirits weave their gentle way through the novel and he has brief encounters with one or two that would draw him in the wrong direction.
The book follows through the years of childish games and experimental teenage years with a brief dangerous dalliance with hallucinogenic drugs.
For me it's the latter part of Billy's life that I find most captivating. The author comes into his own with his descriptive style of life underground in a northern mine as Billy takes up the inheritance of his forefathers and begins working in the mines. I can picture the distorted steel girder work above him "bearing the weight of the world" I can hear the laughter and witness the camaraderie between Leatherneck, Colin the Cobbler, Left Hand Dave and the others as they descend the shaft trying to take their minds off the next hours of backbreaking dirty and dangerous toil. I felt the book was written throughout with some beautiful descriptive prose and left me with a tear jerker at the end.
