5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 16 Mar. 2000
This review is from: New Boots and Panties!! (Audio CD)
I first listened to this album when I was about 14. At that time I remember being amazed at the language in some of the tunes but after the initial shock wore off what remained was an amazingly catchy pub rock album with fantasically well observed thumbnail sketches of English working class life in the late Seventies. Dury's lyrical skill would put a lot of today's rappers to shame. "What a Waste" trundles beautifully along while "Plaistow Patricia", "Blockheads" and "Sweet Gene Vincent" provide you with plenty of opportunities for spilling your beer whilst pogo-ing. "My Old Man" is a great character sketch and a lesson in economy of words. This album is basically the "Best of Ian Dury" and stands as an extremely important album in the history of English artists. He's like Mike Leigh on speed and cider! Everyone should own it

"American Beauty": the Shooting Script (Newmarket Shooting Script)

American Beauty sets a new high water mark for cinema. The film is such a perfect blend of comedy, metaphysics, morality and metaphor that, on first viewing, literally blows you away with it's sophistication.
Alan Ball appears to have had a touch of divine inspiration for the scripting. The dialogue in this film is without doubt some of the most powerful you will come across, it's also some of the downright funniest too.
Truthfulness seems to be in short supply these days but this screen play has it spades. The fact that it's Ball's first screenplay (and Mendes' first movie) is staggering.
Buy this screenplay and treat it as the best "Self Help" book you can buy.
